A lot had been going on with Martha lately and catching up with friends was one of those things. First she had been offered a job at The Agency, which she had accepted and was in the process of leaving the hospital. Then Jack had returned so she had caught up with him and Torchwood then John had had more dreams, primarily the dreams that included her so they had gotten together to talk about those and now it was time to catch up with Rose. Rose’s job kept her away for prolonged periods of time, which made it difficult to see the blond, but now that Martha would have a more routine schedule with The Agency and Torchwood, she would have more of a social life and that meant she could make better plans with her friends when they were available.
Today, Martha and Rose had decided to meet up at a park near Martha’s apartment to jog. It had been awhile since Martha had done any form of exercise aside from running around the hospital, so she planned to get back into it now that she would have more time and jogging with Rose seemed like a good way to catch up with her friend.
Rose was running a little behind...literally. The park wasn’t very far from her own flat and she thought it might be a good idea to walk there instead of taking a bus. The whole point was to exercise so she wanted to give it another go. She may have been a bit winded after her last bout, but she had to just keep at it!
What had started as a job soon turned into a slow walk so Rose was a little late meeting up with her friend. She was a little flushed from her beginning run but flashed a smile to Martha as she came up to her. “Hey!” she said, a little out of breath. “Sorry I’m late. I thought it would be a good idea to warm up before we went on our own jog, but…” She shrugged her shoulders in defeat. Her smile grew though as she gave her friend a hug. “It’s so good to see you! I feel like I haven’t seen you in forever!” She pulled back, her smile warm.
“Is there a lot to catch up on?”
Martha returned the smile when she saw Rose approaching her and hugged her back, “Hey. How’s the new job going?” While Martha didn’t know exactly what it was like to be a flight attendant, she knew all too well what it was like to work long hours, “A little, but you haven’t missed too much.” She picked up one or two bottles of water that she’d brought from her apartment and handed one to Rose, “Lets walk and talk.”
Rose sighed and shrugged, taking the water bottle Martha offered and falling into step. “It’s going.” She glanced at her friend and smiled, knowing she could talk to her about her what was going on. “It’s just...hard to be away for such long periods of time ya know? I was only home eight days last month and this month, I’m missing my friends engagement party because I’ll be away.” She gave a small shrug of her shoulders. “I dunno, I just don’t know if I wanna go back to working a regular kind of shoppe job to be able to be home more or keep doing my attendant because it’s something bigger.” She glanced over and smiled.
“But what about you? Sounds like you have some news?”
As Rose talked about her job woes, Martha couldn’t help but wonder if she would work at Torchwood. She had a feeling that Jack would jump at the chance to have Rose around the Hub, but she wasn’t sure what skills Rose had in the waking world that she could use at Torchwood, “I know what that’s like, in a way. I’ve done back to back twelve hour shifts. I know it isn’t exactly the same, but I know what it’s like to barely be home.” She would have to talk to Jack, “I kind of do. I’m leaving the hospital and I’m going to be working for another company.”
Rose nodded her head, understanding how their two jobs could be similar. “I hate missing out on things, especially when it has to do with close friends. Or just being able to come home and be with John, ya know?” She glanced at Martha, not sure how much she had updated her friend on where she and her flatmate stood.
Martha’s big announcement almost made Rose stop in her tracks. Instead, she slowed her pace and raised an eyebrow, looking at her friend. “That’s a big life change,” she said, meaning to say it in a positive and supportive manner. “What made you decide to leave? And what company will you be working for?” Martha was a good friend and Rose only had her best interests at heart. She knew she wasn’t the type to just jump into anything, but she couldn’t help but be surprised by her decision to leave the hospital. To be honest, Rose had thought she would stay there as a career, moving to higher levels of the hospital.
“I’m actually going to be working at a government hospital. I was recruited.” It did suck having to have a cover story, but The Agency was a secret organization so she couldn’t go around telling people about it; even her friends. Well, maybe Jack, because she knew that Torchwood had an alliance with The Agency. “My hours will be a lot steadier now.”
Rose’s eyebrows rose, impressed. “A government hospital? That sounds really impressive! One based here in the OC though yeah? You won’t have to move or anything?” She would always be supportive of her friends, but she hated the idea of Martha moving away. Even if they weren’t able to see each other that much due to their work schedules, she considered her to be one of her closest friends. She didn’t want to lose the physical hanging out with her, the time was short enough as it was!
“Even more impressive that you were recruited. Not that I’m that surprised. You’ve always stood out!” She nudged her with her shoulder.
Martha glanced over at Rose as they walked and smiled, “Kind of feels like in the dreams. Sometime after I left The Doctor, I was recruited by a group called UNIT. I worked for them for awhile, also helping with Torchwood for a short time.” When she thought about it, her real life was pretty much imitating her dreams now except for the part where she had yet to take a ride in the TARDIS, which she still hoped would show up someday along with her key. Rose and Jack had theirs so why hadn’t she gotten hers yet?
“UNIT?” Rose thought about it, thinking that it sounded familiar, but shook her head. “I always wonder what I’ll do after I leave the Doctor. I mean, I don’t want to, but I kind of figure I do, since there seem to be other Doctors and I don’t know them…” She realized she was rambling and shrugged again. “I hope it’s something cool like you!”
They wandered down a few streets, Rose happy that the weather was so nice. “So new job promotion. What else has been going on?”
“Yeah, UNIT; The Unified Intelligence Taskforce.” Martha said as they continued talking, I was recruited after I left The Doctor, but in the end Mickey and I went freelance alien hunting together.” Aside from traveling with The Doctor, alien hunting with Mickey had been extremely enjoyable. As Rose continued talking, Martha took a sip of her water, not wanting there to be any awkward silences. The downside of being The Doctor’s companion after Rose meant that Martha knew what had happened to her friend, but she wasn’t going to be the one to tell her. It wasn’t her place, “You’ll find out eventually.”
Martha shook her head in response to Rose’s question, “Not too much really. New job, catching up with Jack. Hanging out with you and John, respectively.” Which when she thought about it, it was a little strange that she hadn’t really hung out with Rose and The Doctor together.
What happened to Martha after her adventures with the Doctor sounded like something Rose would want to do too; after all her experience with her travels, she figured she would have a lot of insight to the comings and goings of aliens. Still, she couldn’t help but feel lost, not being able to travel with her best friend. She was trying to prepare herself for the moment she left (or even for the reason), but she had a feeling it would turn out to be more tragic than she could expect.
“We need to all hang out together,” she said. “You, me, John, and Jack. Maybe dinner? And something else? Nothing too ‘datey’”. She made quotation marks around the word.
"I'm always up for all of us getting together." Martha loved getting together with Rose, John and Jack separately, so doing it together would be even better. "I'm sure we can figure out something that's not too datey." She smirked at Rose knowingly, "but you and John are dating, right?" She had thought for awhile that something was going on between them, but she didn't recall that suspicion ever being confirmed.
“Well, uh, no? I mean, not really. We’re just really close. And uh...we don’t need a title for it really, ya know? I mean, I know he cares about me and vice versa, so that’s all that matters right?” It was always that same question that seemed to haunt Rose. Sure, she liked John well enough, but that was enough right? Did she want more?
“Anyway, we should definitely plan something together.” Smooth conversation changer. She pretended to think really hard on what they could do. “Mini golfing? I feel like that would be fun to watch Jack and John go at that together.”
Martha glanced over at Rose as she jogged beside her friend, but only briefly, not wanting to accidently run into anyone or anything. She knew from the dreams that The Doctor had obviously had feelings for Rose; it was part of the reason Martha had left him. She’d been developing her own feelings for The Doctor, but he was too wrapped up in Rose to notice. “I guess, but personally, I think you two are cute together.” Smirking, she cast another quick glance at Rose. “John would probably analyze each hole before taking his shot and Jack….I don’t even know what Jack would do, but it’d be amusing for sure.”
Rose smiled, appreciating the compliment from Martha. She had heard that a lot, many of her friends commenting on how close she and her flatmate were. And it was true; their relationship couldn’t really be compared to any other relationship. It felt more important than a regular sort of relationship and that was ok...right?
“Mini golf it is,” Rose said, laughing. “As soon as I can figure out what’s going on with my flight attending and if I’ll still do that, we’ll all get together!”
It was obvious that Rose didn’t want to talk too much about John, so Martha wouldn’t push too much for the moment. “You thinking of quitting?” Martha knew how exhausting a job like Rose’s could be because she had had a job just as exhausting. “Got something else in mind?”
Rose shook her head with a shrug of her shoulders. “I haven’t actually. I feel fairly confident that I could apply to just do another service or retail job. I wouldn’t really want to, but I thought I’d reach out to some mates to see if they had any openings at their jobs before doing that. Right now, I just wanna get out so I can be able to see everyone more often!” It sounded like a lame excuse now, but Rose was gone so much, she didn’t feel like she was able to see as many people as she wanted. “For now I’ll play it by ear, but I think I’ll be quitting soon.”
“I know how you feel about the not seeing everyone as often.” Martha said as they continued jogging, “And I’m sure you’ll find something that you’ll love.” She had no doubt that Rose would eventually find what she was supposed to be doing. “And friends really are the best people to find out from. I’d get you a job where I am, if I could.” Having traveled with The Doctor, Rose would probably be suited for some department in the Agency, but she couldn’t exactly talk about the Agency with just anyone.
Rose smiled, loving how her friends were always there for her. She stopped her jog, not minding that they were already sweaty and pulled her friend into a hug. It was a bit emotional for what they were doing, but she really did appreciate everything her friends were helping her in and supporting. “Well, I’ll let you know if things don’t pan out anywhere else. I’d rather work for you than go back to serving coffee to grumpy people.” She sniffed and wiped her nose on her sleeve.
“Speaking of which...I think I could do with a snack and a drink! Can I buy you one?”
Martha took a sip of her water then nodded, “A snack sounds good. There’s a smoothie shop nearby. We could try that.” Martha would be happy to see Rose more often if she did indeed quite her flight attendant job and hoped that her friend eventually found the right job for her.
