Who: Clint Barton & Kate Bishop
When: Mid-week
Where: Clint's apartment.
What: Kate comes over with beer (not lite) and there's pizza and Netflix; Clint even unpacked a little. Sort of.
Warnings: Possible language and awkward people.
Status: Complete.

Clint's place wasn't exactly a dump. It was sparse, probably needed a little attending to, more than just a coat of paint and a shove of random stuff into the corner, but Clint wasn't exactly too bothered about that stuff.

It was homey and livable and that was all that mattered; Lucky had space to sprawl, there was a decent sized gap between the sofa, the coffee table and the tv to allow for optimal lounging and feet on table, so Clint was happy. He'd at least cleared the weeks worth of coffee mugs from the sink when Kate text to invite herself over with beer for some Netflix and pizza and really, Clint didn't mind.

He wasn't overly social right then, between the relocation and figuring out what to do with himself, he'd sort of neglected to actually go out and do anything. Kate was fairly easy company. She had a goofy quality that helped Clint relax a little, wasn't a complete chatterbox and was fun to talk to. The gentle and light flirting in between wasn't bad either.

So Netflix was gearing out suggestions on stuff to watch and Clint had the local pizzeria's number tacked to the wall by the phone and Lucky was fed, watered and walked and ready to curl up and sleep in about an hours time unless he got some TLC between now and then. Which pretty much meant he was set, right?

Right. He was set.

Kate had not-lite beer in hand, a cell phone in pocket, and a smile on her face as she knocked in the door to Clint's place. She'd pretty much invited herself over, but Clint didn't seem to mind. He was easy going, which Kate appreciated. And, okay, she liked flirting with him. Maybe more than she should have.

So tonight would be fun. Beer, pizza and movies with good company? Kate was looking forward to meeting her hair down, so to speak. Her grin brightened when the door opened. "I hope you like microbrew." She held up the two six packs she'd picked up. Good beer. Not lite.

"Sure," Clint didn't really have much of a worry with beer. Provided it wasn't the lite crap that tasted like water he was good. Microbrew would be fine. Of course with the door open and a stranger appearing, Lucky was padding across the room in no time.

"Kate, Lucky, Lucky, Kate." And at least she knew he had a dog and wasn't going to come in and sneeze everywhere. "Don't let him lick you, he won't stop." The big doofus was just a giant fluff ball of affection. Taking the beer from Kate to take to the open kitchen, Clint set a pack of them in the fridge to cool and broke two bottles away from the pack.

"You want a glass?" Best to offer rather than just assume she'd swig from the bottle like a total heathen, exactly like he'd started doing in the kitchen. "Make yourself at home," there was a stand by the door for jackets and whatever, a small pile of Clint's sneakers and boots just beside it and a basic table just beside the door where mail was already piling up and Clint's wallet and keys sat in a bowl with Lucky's leash.

Because otherwise he'd lose shit all the time.

Kate passed over the two six packs of the microbrew--they were different kinds, but both from the same micropub that she loved--and then gave her full attention to the dog.

"Well, hiya, Lucky." Kate said, and dropped down to one knee right there in the foyer. She brought both hands up for the dog to sniff, then scratched at his ears and head, rubbed his neck with both hands. "Who's a good boy? Who's a good boy." She said, and found that he was already licking her face, even before Clint's warning.

"Nah," she called out in response to his question. "'M good." Finally, she pulled away from the dog and stood up straight to follow him into the kitchen, but only after kicking off her Converse to add to his pile. Her socks were two different colors. "Don't mind if I do." She jumped up onto the counter to sit and watch him open bottles, or whatver.

"What kind of pizza are we ordering?"

With both bottles of one brand open, Clint passed one over to Kate, fishing through a cupboard to grab one of Lucky's treats as the dog came over, tail wagging at the prospect of company to dote on him. Tossing him the treat, which should take up some of his attention for a while, Clint turned to lean against a counter himself, smirking at Kate. "Whatever," Clint didn't have too large a preference for pizza, he pretty much liked any pizza there was. He didn't even mind when there was pineapple on it. "Place is local, doesn't take long to get here. You got a preference?"

As much as Clint was a passable cooker, he didn't really get the urge to make meals for himself. He ate when he was hungry, and it was either quick to make rubbish or take away rubbish. On the plus side, it meant that most of the places near him now knew him pretty well. Clint rarely needed to wait too long for any of his orders.

"There's pizza or Chinese just down the block." Not that Clint picked this place because of the good fast food nearby.

Ah, beer. It was a nice way to relax after a long day. Okay, so Kate's days weren't actually that long. She didn't have her lessons with the little ones today. She was still young, and relatively green, so she had to teach all of the first classes, so that involved a lot of tiny children brandishing bows and arrows at one school and foils at another. Training foils, but still. Alarming how many six and seven year old boys turned a fencing foil into a light sabre.

"No fish, no shrimp, no pineapple." Kate said before taking a sip. She wasn't the girly girl kind who needed a glass or whatever. But, seriously, did she act like she was to prissy to drink from a bottle?

"I could do Chinese, too. Lots of meat and vegetables, other than that I have no preference." She held the beer with both hands in her lap, grinning over at him. "I'm easy." Flirt.

Okay, so maybe the flirting had gone from light and simple to anything but subtle, it wasn't really that big a deal. They were adults who could have some fun, whatever. "Well, Lucky usually prefers the pizza." And why was Clint feeding his dog human food? Because his dog was a fucking asshole that pouted when he didn't get it. That was why. "Meat feast?" No fish, shrimp or fruit to be found. And really, the more protein Clint could get in ridiculous forms of food the better.

Clint grabbed the phone off the counter, shamelessly hitting his speed dial and crossing his feet at his ankles before placing his order. He didn't even mind the lame conversation with Adam the pizza kid since the kid was talking about enlisting and always had another question for Clint to answer about the army and whatever division he wanted to go into.

"Give it twenty." Usually, it was quicker than that, but erring on the side of caution and all. "So, besides archery and fencing, what did you take at college?"

Hey, yolo, right? Kate figured she had nothing to lose here. Hopefully Clint could take a joke. And if he was gonna take as more than a joke? All the better. So long as he didn't mind. Or even reciprocated. That would be the best, actually.

"I'm sure there's some joke to be made about how much I'd enjoy a meat fest right now," Kate said, barely holding back a laugh, "but I can't think what it is." Then she sat and sipped from her bottle, watching him on the phone with the pizza kid. She could tell they'd talked about this before, and she wondered if Clint wanted or needed to talk about his time in the service more. Like to a shrink. Weren't they just talking about that? So long as it wasn't Dr. Phil.

Kate lifted her wrist to check her non-existent watch. "Twenty minutes and counting," she said, then lifted the bottle for another sip. "Mmm, yes. Well, I studied all the regular stuff. Math, history, science, English... I took some art classes but I can't draw a stick figure to save my life."

Clint didn't bother to reply to the comment about meat, just smirking slightly. In the space of time it had taken to order the pizza, Lucky had gotten bored with Clint's non-entertaining and Kate's attention being elsewhere, meaning he was sprawled by the radiator in the den to chew away at his treat while the humans were boring. "Regular stuff huh," Clint hadn't even done that much, but it wasn't like he didn't have other things to be doing at the point. College hadn't been an option, college wasn't even really something he'd wanted.

"What was the plan? Just figure it out later?" His mom had been all about direction, his dad less so. Kate seemed like a bright enough girl, and she had a decent head on her shoulders. He doubted the idea from the start had been to teach kids and hermits how to shoot sticks from branches with string.

"Unless you always wanted to go around playing Robin Hood, in which case," Clint shrugged and raised his bottle in a salute, "Living the dream."

The humans were definitely boring. Kate was focused on Clint, holding the bottle between her fingertips and grinning at him over the top. Actually, she'd had plenty of gulps from the thing, and it was approaching the half-way full mark. Or maybe slipping just past it. She hadn't even noticed that Lucky was gone out of the room.

"Yes. That was exactly the plan. I wanted to be a professional Robin Hood." She grinned. "Nah, I was too busy wining national championships in archery to bother with trying to figure out what my degree was going to be in." She lifted the bottle in response to his raise, and gulped from it, then set it down beside her on the counter. "What about you? Did you do any extra schooling, or... I don't know much about the military, I'm afraid."

There was absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to professionally rob people and shoot things. Although the law might dispute that and everyone was all about following the law. Probably better not to become a modern day Robin Hood actually.

That was the thing about life though, wasn't it. Living it got in the way with planning it.

"I enlisted right out of high school," he'd barely bothered to graduate high school, but he'd been told it would help his placement in the army, "got the specialist training in the Army, came out qualified for a few things," Clint knew his way around some mechanical things, he was passable in a few languages and could shoot a man from seven hundred yards in moderate wind on a clear day. "It worked for me. I wasn't really the higher education type."

Probably best to keep on the good side if the law. Even if it spoiled the fun.

"And now you get to figure out what else to do with your life, just like the rest of us schmucks." With a smirk, Kate lifted her glass in a toast again up off the counter and drained it. Then she set the empty bottle back down again. "Mmm," swallow, "I wasn't either, actually. But I had to make sure the 529 account in my name wouldn't go to waste." Kate came from money. Lots of it. She wasn't that found of her father, but they still communicated. It meant she had a safety net should her swordplay and archery stuff fall through.

"One more beer and I'll let you pick the movie."

That figuring things out part was going to be fun, for sure. He still didn't know what the hell he was going to do with his life. "It's so much fun." Clint just rolled his eyes, more than sure the sarcasm would get across. Because the whole world liked figuring that shit out twice, right.

"It seems you've used it wisely." Clint wasn't far behind finishing his first beer, leaving both the empties on the counter by the sink to go out with the recycling later. "Okay, at least help me pick a genre." Clint was in no way a movie buff, but being overseas a lot meant the wasn't in the position to catch a lot of movie releases. He had a lot to catch up on as it was, and Netflix was pretty handy in the aspect.

Cracking open another two bottles, Clint handed one off to Kate just as the buzzer went on the apartment intercom, Clint buzzing the pizza kid in and grabbing his wallet from the table to pay it. Kate brought the beer, he'd pay the pizza. "Netflix is geared up, feel free." Pointing through towards the den area, Clint saw to the food while Kate could make herself comfortable.

Oh, the sarcasm came across. And gosh darn it if it wasn't a bit of a turn-on for Kate. She liked the snark. Maybe more than she should have.

And she shrugged. She'd done okay. She was having a good time, making a living wage, and barely touching her trust fund. That was a good sign, right? She could have done a lot worse. She could have done a lot better, too, but couldn't everyone?

"Okay," she said, and accepted the bottle with another quick "thanks" before heading into the den. Of course, she pretty much ignored the television and went straight to Lucky to dote on the dog.

Once Clint was done with the pizza kid, Kate moved to the sofa to find a remote and fiddle with the television. Ah, neflix. A great way to waste a few hours, a great way to spend 'em, too.

Being the dude that he was, Clint didn't really bother with plates, just napkins and a knife for slicing any difficult crusts. The box was set on the table, flipping open the top and instantly needing to push Lucky away from the box for now. Humans first, canines second. "Dig in." Because once Lucky got his teeth in it was a lost cause.

"So, provided you stay away from the war documentaries or whatever, we're good on whatever to watch." Clint was just terrible at watching those, not because of any kind of trauma, but his sniggering comments about the terrible quality or the way the media sensationalised certain aspects of it all. Grabbing a napkin and a slice, Clint slumped back into the sofa, feet on the edge of the coffee table.

"Right you, grubber," getting Lucky to shuffle away and to the side, to sit and wait for his treat for once in his silly dog life, Clint was content to see if there was anything that Kate did want to watch.

Already having established that Kate wasn't that much of a girly girl, it wouldn't be much of a surprise when she leaned forward and grabbed a slice of pizza without needing plate or napkin. She started in right away, and would likely go for a second slice--provided there wasn't too much drool or teeth marks on the pie.

"Stupid comedy? Those are fun. Or we could cuddle up and get romantic." She gave him a little smirk. Back to the flirting. "Just nothing that makes me cry. Don't want my mascara to run."

Most of Clint's time was spent around fellow Army brats, a lot of them didn't really care too much for being civilised, although Clint's mother would wing him around the ear if he'd done that at home. The fact that Kate just jumped right in just made the whole thing more relaxed and easy too.

With Kate eating, Clint leaned over to grab a slice for the dog, obviously unconcerned with giving his pet pizza to munch through like he was part of the company. "God, no. I hate streaky eyes, I'm wiping the black from my cheeks for days." A small joke, but Clint just settled into the sofa more comfortably.

He didn't care if it was a cheesy romance movie, he'd barely seen anything released in the last ten years anyway. "How about... Identity Theif?" It was one of the suggestions in his comedy section so why not? "Doesn't seem like I'll need to pay too much attention to it."

Kate was only a tiny bit disappointed that her flirt about getting romantic didn't even seem to make a mark. At the same time, she wasn't surprised. She continued eating and drinking, planning on getting through this bottle and possibly one mite before the end of the night. That was as far as she could go and still be safe to drive. Sorta. Mostly.

But this felt good. Safe and comfortable. And Kate liked Clint. As if that wasn't obvious.

"Aren't you going to put in the subtitles or something?"

As the movie started up, Clint just shook his head at Kate's question, "My aids work okay with the room," the tv was pretty much directly in front of them, and Clint had put it in the most acoustic spot of the room so that the sound would cover enough that he'd still pick up everything. "I'm stationary, so it should be fine. I'm sure we'll blame any jokes I don't get on my hearing though." Sometimes he would've needed it, he tended to watch the news with subtitles if he could, mostly because this place turned out to be kind of weird and random shit happened, but mostly, not when he was at home.

And really, the fact that he could just joke about that was clearly milestone territory, his state-appointed military therapist would be oh so proud if he ever bothered to return her call.

"My pop culture understanding is decidedly lacking."

Kate nodded. She set the remote control aside, and turned to watch the movie with him, content that he'd be able to hear and not need the subtitles if he said so.

"I'll let you do just that." Kate said, giving him a grin. Hey, she was proud of him too. Maybe. Or would be if she'd known this was a thing she was supposed to be proud of. She tapped her bottle against his in a cheers, then sipped from it.

"We can work on that." Kate said, and went for her second slice of pizza.

With the movie starting up, the lead in with its usual credit feed and what not, Clint just grabbed another slice for himself and left his feet on the table.

There was something comfortable about company you didn't need to constantly talk in, and Clint appreciated that. Considering he wasn't exactly a big social interaction kind of guy either. He wasn't one for hanging out all the time or going out to big events or stuff like that. He wasn't exactly a loner, but a few people here and there was fine.

Kate was pretty good company too; dorky in a cute way that he could kind of relate to and really easy going. The flirting didn't bother him in the slightest and really, it was fine anyway. He liked spending time with her, the hour or so for training and she seemed exceptionally good to just hang out with.

Sitting companionally on the sofa wasn't awkward either, so no. Clint didn't really see a problem with flirting, and if it actually went somewhere, well that would be sort of fun to figure out too.

So, by the time the movie was half-way through, Kate was two and a half beers in, two slices of pizza in, and thinking maybe it was time to switch to water. Well, after this beer, anyway.

Lucky came over and rested his head on her knee, so she just had to give him some pets and scratches about his ears. Then her knees started bouncing and she brought a hand to rest on Clint's arm, to get his attention.

She lifted her hand and made the sign for "t" in sign language, then waved it slightly from side to side. Toilet? It was one of two signs she knew from her Elective Wheel Sign Language class in the eighth grade. (The other wasn't appropriate in the current circumstance.)

Since it didn't require a lot of attention, Clint was mostly just lounging back and half paying attention to anything around. Lucky generally got restless after too long just sitting around and Kate seemed happy enough to dote some attention on him anyway.

At the tap and the sign, Clint just smirked a little and pointed to the left side of the hall down from the sitting room. The apartment was ridiculously small, but he wasn't exactly the sort to need a massive amount of space; besides the main room and kitchen there was a bathroom and bedroom. Fairly basic really.

"On your left, lights on the outside." No doubt Lucky would follow her too, "Want me to pause it?"

As Kate set aside her beer bottle, she shook her head. "I can't imagine I'm gonna miss much." She pulled herself quickly up to her feet, and felt the room spin just slightly. The haze of a couple of beers was settling on her mind, and it made her smirk. What might become of those lowered inhibitions? "I'll be right back."

Sure enough, Lucky followed after her. Kate didn't realize it until she reached the bathroom door, but then she let the dog come in behind her before she closed it. Peeing didn't take long. She washed her hands, then brought Lucky back to the living room with her.

When she sat back down on the sofa, it was considerably closer to Clint. She grabbed her beer to finish it. "Any major plot points you need keep me abreast of?"

"I think they were yelling, but it's thankfully very hard to tell." While he could hear everything mostly fine it was moderately dulled, his aids not actually set to pick up any loop in the apartment. He preferred not having echoing going on in his head because of Lucky's barks at times.

The proximity wasn't in the least problematic and Clint just smirked, "So you know sign language?" Even if it was just a case of her knowing a few minor motions to ask the basic things, the same things a few of his buddies had learned once they found out about the extensive damage to his hearing, well, it was still impressive.

ASL as fairly popular, sure, but that was mostly with people who had reasons to learn them, like people in the family or friends who were deaf.

"Ah, I see. Very important plot developments." Kate grinned softly, settling back against the sofa. Her shoulder was just barely touching his. She could feel his warmth through his shirt and her own.

"Just a little. I only really remember two signs. Thankfully, one of them is an important one," her grin brightened. And was that a tinge of pink on her cheeks at the thought of the other sign she knew?

"It was an elective course at my middle school."
