Rose had already been home for a couple of days and was actually packing to be off once more. This time was for work, a long engagement that she kept telling herself was to make up for the week off she had asked for (and was granted). She had wanted to see all her friends before flying out again and remembered Bela’s offer to come over for some drinks and to see her boat. Rose remembered how that was one of their first conversations, when Bela had gotten her dream ship and how she needed a slew of cabin boys. The thought brought a smile to her face as she got out of the taxi, looking down at the dock and wondering which boat was her’s.
It was a shame she didn’t have the ship anymore, Rose had a feeling she would have loved to have kept it. Still, she thought it was pretty cool to have a boat! She frowned, realizing she hadn’t asked any practical questions like where she had the boat docked or what the name of it was. She scrolled through her contacts and found Bela’s number, pressing the ‘call’ button.
“Hey, Bela? It’s me! I’m here, but which boat is yours?”
It was a gorgeous day for drinking fizzy fruity cocktails up on the deck of your very nice boat, and Isabela had already set up a big tray of refreshments. This was going to be fun, or at least she hoped it would be. Rose usually was, and there was a whole trip to catch up on, too.
She laughed when her phone rang and quickly picked it up, "Oi, did I forget to give you directions? Silly me. It's The Pearl, the big white one with the blue detailing. Here!"
Isabela waved a bit in Rose's direction. Luckily for them both the blonde was the only person on the docks at that time of day, "I'm waving! I have fruity drinks!"
Rose looked around until she saw Bela and grinned, waving back at her. “Fruity drinks? Be there in a jiff!” She hung up the phone and made her way over to the boat, her smile growing the closer she got. “Hey! Thanks for the invite!” She reached out to give her friend a hug. “Nice boat too! Now what’s this about fruity drinks?”
"Only the best fruity drinks, of course! I thought since it was daylight and all we'd go a bit more light with the alcohol. So I mixed us up something fizzy with berries in." Isabela replied, as she gave Rose a squeeze.
She was standing in a sitting area that had been set up on deck - a square area that had been lined with cushions along one side to act as a gathering area. The drinks were on a tray on a small table in the center, along with a few dishes of fresh berries and a plate of other snacks, like cheeses. "And I thought you'd be hungry so I laid out some things to nibble on. Since we don't have any cabin boys to nibble on instead."
“I think that sounds like you know me a bit too well,” she said with a grin. It wasn’t that Rose was a lightweight but she certainly couldn’t take in as much alcohol as Isabela could. Still, fizzy fruity drinks sounded like a treat for today and she was happy to indulge in one, two, or even five while hanging out with her friend.
“Thanks for having me over,” she said, taking a look around at the boat. “I’ve never been on a boat before! Well, unless you count a ferry, but that seems completely different than this.” She looked at the drink tray and the food she had set out. “How long have we been friends? Because really...you know me a bit too well.” Rose laughed, reaching over to take two glasses and handed one to Isabela, grabbing a piece of cheese with it too. “That should be our next adventure you know,” she said, after taking a small bite. “We could hold auditions for cabin boys.”
"I'm not the best friend in a lot of ways, luv, but I do listen! And anyway, you can't have fizzy drinks without delicious bites of cheese and such to nibble on." She took the drink and sipped on it - since she wasn't trying to get drunk before five o'clock, "I don't think there's such a thing as knowing someone too much. You could tell me all the messy details of your life and I wouldn't even blink."
After a pause, she added, "Though you probably wouldn't, anyway! But I like that idea. We should definitely hold auditions for cabin boys sometime. After we've finished a few drinks I'll give you the tour! But for now why don't you tell me about your holiday!"
“And that’s just one of the reasons I love ya.” Rose gave Bela a toast, smiling before taking another drink. Now these she could do. She had tried a lot of hard liquor mixed with another drink, but she could never get over that sharp taste of the alcohol. But if it was masked...well, then it was a whole other story.
“Whenever you feel like making the flyers, lemme know. I’ll be happy to help put them up and go through the long, hard process with ya!” She gave Bela a wink, nodding her head when she offered a tour later on. She smiled, thinking back to the Valentine’s weekend and the nice surprise John had for her. “It was nice. It was my first trip to New York and I loved it! Did all the usual touristy things, took lots of pictures with Waldo, aaaaand I got a surprise visit from my flatmate! He flew all the way out to surprise me for Valentine’s!” The smile she had on her face pretty much told Bela everything she needed or might have wanted to know.
“How about yours?” she asked. “Did you have a nice Valentine’s?”
The smile on Roses's face also made Bela smirk widely. 'Surprise visits' indeed. "I think I didn't have nearly as good of a one as you did! A friend was going to hook me up with someone, but it fell through. So I mainly sat around a bar hoping I'd catch the eye of some lonely, handsome man. Or a lonely woman. Oh I didn't end up lonely and I had a lot of fun, but it didn't mean as much as the kind of night you probably ended up having!"
Somewhere in the back of Bela's mind, she was starting to wonder if every encounter she was ever going to have was going to be about as meaningless. In a small way, she envied Rose. But she was also happy for her friend, "I think I'm just going to have to live vicariously through you when it comes to these sort of long term relationship-type things. You and I both know I'm allergic to them myself."
She grinned at Rose and toasted her with her glass.
She couldn’t help but blush when Bela hinted at the night she had shared with John. It had been pretty special, one she was happy he felt comfortable sharing with her. “I’m glad you had a good night too,” she said, toasting her friend right back. “Sorry to hear about the hook up though. That could have been fun too!” She grinned, wondering at the same time if Bela did want something more. She had always assumed she was fine with the dating and shagging life, but maybe she had hoped for something more as well?
“I dunno, I think you’d make a great girlfriend! Just gotta find that right person, yeah?” They had started this conversation before, when Bela was trying to show Rose how to pick guys up. “Tell me about your ideal boyfriend. Or girlfriend.” Rose realized she didn’t know if Bela had a preference; did most bisexuals? She frowned, realizing how little she knew of Bela’s lifestyle. She didn’t want to come out and ask the questions, thinking she might find them rude. She felt like a school aged girl learning about sex in class!
She took a sip of her drink, hoping that would calm her down a bit.
"I'm not sure that right person exists, blast it all." Isabela replied, twirling her cocktail in her hand. "I've got a secret, alright? I'll tell you it because you're the trustworthy sort. I actually dream about this woman. She's amazing in the sack, and gorgeous, and intense, and sexy, and has the perfect things to say - which are almost always snarky. And she gets me, too. That's important."
Bela reached her hand out, searching the plate of snacks she'd made up for something new to nibble on. It was also a good way to not have to look directly at her friend, "I'm not good with the emotional stuff. It took her a while to 'reel me in', so to speak, and we're not the sorts to join up at the hip. She does her thing and I do mine, yeah?"
Rose couldn’t help but show a bit of surprise on her face when Bela talked about her dreams. She had never heard her talk about it before and it seemed that she was rather smitten with the girl she dreamed about. “No sign of her here though?” she asked, cocking an eyebrow and taking a sip of her drink. That always seemed to be the way. Although, she would remain hopeful for her friend. She hadn’t thought to see her Doctor walking around, but sure enough, she had run into him. The area seemed to have a knack for making the impossible, possible.
Rose watched as Bela played around figuring out what to eat, reaching out to take a raspberry and pop it in her mouth. “I think that sounds like a pretty healthy relationship though,” she commented, thinking of her own with John. Was it considered unhealthy? She did things with friends without John, although they were almost connected at the hip. He didn’t seem to mind though and she certainly didn’t; that was part of it right? If both parties were alright with it? “Plus, if it’s someone who gets you, gets that you’re not really good at the emotional stuff, then that’s the person for ya.”
"Exactly the sort, right. Her mother died in the dreams and it was a whole mess, and I was left standing in her bedroom with... no idea what to say, even though I knew I ought to say something, since we were. You know. A thing." Bela wrinkled her nose a bit as she spoke, her hand finally selecting a slice of apple.
"And she didn't mind that I was shite at words, Hawke never minded any of that. No sign of her here, though. And I've looked. I'm actually a little ashamed to admit that." Bela smirked at Rose a bit, though she looked just slightly sheepish, "If she showed up I'm not sure what I'd do. There's no counting on her being the same as I dreamed, either, really. So I try to let that go. Only I'm shite at letting things go, too."
Rose couldn’t help but smile back at her friend, seeing a side of her that she had never thought about before. Isabela always seemed like the type of girl who didn’t want to be tied down, going between different people like it was a challenge or a game. Rose felt a little guilty for thinking that after hearing her speak so highly of this girl. “I looked for my Doctor and he wasn’t around. And then he just showed up! You never know, she could come with time. Don’t give up.” She reached over and took Bela’s hand, giving it a little squeeze.
“And don’t worry,” she said, taking her hand back to grab an apple slice. “Your secret is safe with me.” She made a motion across her lips to show she would keep her lips sealed. “But that really does sound like the person for you! Knowing you well enough and you feeling comfortable enough not to try and be anyone but yourself.” She grinned, knowing that’s why she liked John so much. “I really hope she shows up.”
It felt all awkward for a second, having some emotional moment like that, even with as good a friend as Rose. But Isabela squeezed Rose's hand in return before it was let go, and nodded her head a bit.
Then she took a gigantic gulp of her drink, and stood up. "We'll have to see if she does. I'm not one to get my hopes up, I think it just hurts worse when they get dashed. Listen to me, I sound like some cranky pessimist. Here, why don't we do something fun?"
Bela motioned towards the bridge, where the boat controls were housed, "Lets go for a sail around the coast for a few hours. I can teach you a bit about boating!"
And it would get her mind off of Hawke. That was the second best thing about it. The first best obviously being sailing with a friend out on the open waters.
Rose finished off her drink and scrambled over to the controls. “Cool! Can I try and drive it too?” Probably not the best idea, but she was eager and just as happy to sit back and watch Isbela at the wheel (helm?). They could always do lessons another time.
