Who: Athos and Dick
When: Early March
Where: Police station
What: Visiting D’Artagnan’s old stomping ground
Rating/Warnings: Low/None
Status: Complete
The police station had gotten a makeover since Athos had last visited. It looked much more like a reputable station than the crap chute he’d found D’Artagnan in the first time they met. The new captain had taken it upon himself to wash away the disgrace the previous force had done upon it and made it his own. The desks were now out in the open instead of entirely tucked away in offices. There was a fresh paint job on the place and various phrases on the walls. To protect and serve finally had a place in it. There were awards that lined the lobby of the station, and a new secretary.
Dick Grayson had no idea what the place had been like when he was originally transferred, only that he now knew the place by the back of his hand thanks to that strange crime spree. He’d practically lived there. In fact he was sure he knew it better than his own apartment. He was just clocking in now. Fastening his gun to his holster and getting ready for his mid shift. Dick didn’t have a partner yet, and honestly he would rather it remained that way.
Athos had been reminded of D’Artagnan’s old stomping ground when they’d been verbally attacked by the idiots who tried to rob them. He knew steps had been taken to improve the place after he’d taken his complaint as high as it could go but part of him still wasn’t sure if anything really would be better.
So he’d decided to come take a look. Entering the building he was surprised to see such a dramatic change. It really was impressive, if the people were just as crisp then it was most definitely a vast improvement.
Dick looked up from his desk as he prepared to head out and saw a civilian standing there in his opinion looking a little aimless. He decided to attempt a friendly approach and hoped for the best. Public view of this particular station was dismal at best since I.A had torn it apart. Dick was trying to help improve things and shouldering a great deal of the responsibility as a street cop. He didn't have all the details of what had happened but if I.A. was involved it wasn’t anything good.
He left his things at his desk to greet the stranger. "Can I help you? " he was young, early twenties at least but hopeful. Even a little idealistic.
Athos turned and had to admit he was surprised, the man was very young yet looked to be in charge. Interesting. Maybe they’d decided part of the problem had been the ‘old boys club’ feel to things.
“I’m afraid I have to admit I came to check things out” Athos told him holding out his hand, “My name is Athos, it looks like you’ve already made vast improvements” he complimented.
“Athos huh, unique name.” He took the offered hand to shake hesitantly for a moment but grinned. “Afraid I can’t take the credit for all the changes. I’m just a beat cop. My name is Dick Grayson. “ He paused for a moment to look over at him with a raised eyebrow. “Are you I.A.? I heard they flushed the place recently. I only just transferred though.”
Ah that made more sense, he was very young after all. “Ah not exactly, but I am responsible for them sorting this place out” he informed him, “Believe me it was a disgrace before”
He nodded to that. “I see. How exactly? You just look like a civilian? You a lawyer or something?” The guy wasn’t wearing a badge as far as he could tell. Not many people could just gut a station the way he had. “Nobody would tell me what happened before. I transferred in during that weird crime surge..Not exactly a good time for chit chat you know?’
“Ex-CIA, currently working for a private security team” Athos replied, as vague as possible without arousing suspicion or further questions. “My boyfriend worked here, the guys he worked with were scum. Put him in dangerous situations and that kind of thing” he explained, “Yeah it’s been fairly intense around here. I’m glad it’s calming down again”
“That explains it.” The CIA bit shut down further questions from him, but he was a little intrigued by private security. This guy didn’t exactly look like your average security guy. If that was his story though Dick wasn’t going to pry. “Well so far I’ve not had any problems and I’m a transplant, so I guess it’s a good sign yeah?” He asked as he looked over his shoulder. “Want a tour?”
Athos respected that Dick kept his questions to himself, it increased his good impression of this guy. “Definitely a good sign” he nodded, “Sure, if you have time. I don’t want to keep you from anything”
“They can act like a bunch of ten year olds at a slumber party if you fall asleep, but otherwise they’re harmless.” He grinned as he waved him over then. He had no comments about the boyfriend thing, he didn’t care about anyone’s sexual orientation. It wasn’t his business. “Nah. Just patrol, but I pull your rank on them these guys will sooner piss themselves than give me crap.” He smirked. The place was indeed full of new faces, everything was nearly scrubbed down to the finest detail. And they’d added a real gym.
He had to chuckle at that comment, they already sounded like a better group than the worthless louts there previously. Athos expected no comment on his sexual orientation, he didn’t get how people thought their opinion would matter - especially a negative one. He offered a smirk of his own as he followed, “This is great. I’m so glad they put time and effort into making the facilities better” he commented, happy people were nicer people it was simple fact.
Dick was obviously quite a bit more content at this new station than D’Artagnan had ever been. There was no fear in his eyes, only a bright eyed optimism. “The chief isn’t so terrible either, bit intimidating but somehow I doubt a guy like you intimidates easy. He’s in today if you wanted to stop in.” Dick nodded and gave a sheepish sort of grin to that response. “Only problem is I think I live here more than my own apartment.”
It was nice to see, he’d hated the way this place had dragged D’Artagnan down, it had almost crushed his spirit so seeing it as it was now was a relief. “Generally I do the intimidating, or so I’m told” Athos replied, with a slight smile. I’ll peek my head in and say Hi” he nodded, “Maybe a little too much comfort here then hmm?”
“I could have guessed that much. “ He mused aloud but mostly as an off comment. He could tell there was a little something more to Athos then he was telling, but if he didn’t want to tell there wasn’t much Dick could do for that. He could only accept it and move on. “A little. There weren’t many of us when I transferred in. Was pulling quite a few doubles.” He shrugged, things were evening out now though. Rotations were happening more regularly, and it’d helped him to earn a place with the other officers anyway.
Athos smiled a little at that quiet off hand comment, he didn’t always try to be intimidating but apparently it came naturally. And in all honesty if he could say more about his current job he probably would, he wasn’t one to hide who he was. “Ah, well I’m glad to see it seems to be evening out more now. It’s not good to be doing the job too long, you need a rest from the stress of it all”
“Apparently not.” The dark haired man said with an exasperated sigh as he folded his arms. “I am the job, I never thought there was anything wrong with it until recently.” Until he’d nearly lost the one bright spot in his spotty life currently. Zee deserved someone who was going to be around more..
“Grayson, you’re late!” A voice called to him from the main lobby, and Dick winced. “Looks like I’d better get going.”
“Sometimes it just takes that one thing or one person to make you realise these things” Athos said before Dick was called, “Yeah go, I don’t wanna get you in trouble. I’ll just go introduce myself to the boss” he smiled, “It was good to meet you Dick” he added with a nod, “and thanks for the tour”
