Athos and D’Artagnan were enjoying a day off together, the weather was good and they’d already taken Grimaud for a walk along the beach. The puppy had almost given D’Artagnan a heart attack when he had ran off into the sea but he’d soon come back to shake water all over them.
Deciding they needed more puppy food Athos drove them along the beach, stopping at a little cafe for lunch they then headed on to the wholesale warehouse which was packed with all kinds of pet foods and toys. “Think we should get him a couple of treats? Maybe a new pull toy” Athos mused, arm around D’Artagnan’s waist as they walked around.
Indeed it had nearly given him a panic. He had begun to wonder what if it had been Athos and he didn't know how to swim to save him. He was almost ready to try swimming lessons again in spite of his fear.
He was glad for the distraction of the outing. More than Athos knew. He walked along with him, unaware they were being watched the entire time from a distance. "Please at this rate you may as well give him his own room with how many toys he has." D'Artagnan was amused by how much Athos spoiled the critter though, even if it turned him into the stern parent.
He saw something shimmering in a window frame when he pulled away from Athos's arms in attempt to get a closer look. He pressed his forehead against the window when they were approached from both sides by four men at least. It was nearing evening, not quite dark now. D'Artagnan didn't pay them any mind. People were still out shopping so he didn't think anything of it. He continued to look at a glittering Fleur De Lis cell phone wrap that had caught his eyes.
Athos had tried to reassure him that he was a strong swimmer and they wouldn’t be in that situation but he did think it was a good idea for D’Artagnan to at least know how to swim. He would always think that was a good idea.
“Oh he doesn’t have that many” Athos said defending the puppy, “Besides he plays with them all, he loves playing” As relaxed as they were Athos didn’t notice their shadows either.
He did however notice the men getting closer and when D’Artagnan looked in the shop window he moved to stand in front of him protectively. “Evening fellas, can I help you?” he said evenly, glancing at each of them.
D’Artagnan still held some anxiety over swimming, but he wanted to be okay with it. They lived at a beautiful house surrounded by water after all. Looking at it was calming, now he just had to master actually touching it and being calm.
The brunette looked back at Athos with an epic look of disbelief. “I found one in the freezer this morning. He’s got plenty love. He can play with those first I swear.” He shook his head and then raised an eyebrow as Athos moved in to cover him from something. Dark eyes looked away from the shop back to whatever it was had drawn Athos’s attention, and he frowned.
“Yeah you fags can, by emptying your pockets and giving us your money.” The first one offered, holding out a gun at the pair. D’Artagnan looked over at Athos to see what he wanted to do. Was it worth the fight? He’d take his cue from him, as the dream them had. Honestly though, he’d had about enough people insulting him for being gay as he could stand. His patience wasn’t nearly as thick as Athos’s own ran.
Athos usually did have an inordinate amount of patience, especially with D'Artagnan but with men like this he had little to none. Glancing at his fiance he nodded slightly and raised an eyebrow, while they didn't really want a fight Athos hated prejudiced scum like this and they could teach them a lesson before continuing on with their day off.
"I'm afraid that won't be happening so I suggest you walk away now. While you still can"
Unlike Athos, D’Artagnan was more than willing to fight. The number of times he’d been facing this since it became known he was gay was ridiculous. He took a quick glance around and didn’t find much by way of weapons. It wasn’t like people just left them around contrary to popular belief in L.A. However there was a bucket near by from the shop that had been clearing the ground of debris with it.
He was tired of taking crap from ignorant assholes, and used a foot to launch said bucket into the gunman’s arm. The man stumbled and D’Artagnan took the first one down to the ground in his bumbling. This caused the others to react, two approaching Athos from either side.
Athos had come across this kind of thing less often, maybe it was his demeanor that put people off trying anything but whatever it was he didn't like it when things like this happened. Especially not with D'Artagnan around, he felt protective of the other man.
When D'Artagnan made his move Athos made his, punching the first guy who knocked into the second while Athos followed ensuring they didn't have any ideas of getting up again.
He looked over at D'Artagnan, "Alright?" he asked.
Placing a pair of handcuffs on the man he sat on, he looked over his shoulder. “Mhm. Almost disappointed it was that easy.” He had a ton of energy that needed to be directed elsewhere at the moment. As he stood he put a foot on the handcuffed guy so he didn’t try to get up again and brushed his hands off. “Lets see. One, two, three..I could swear there were four?” He looked for the fourth that was barreling at him with all the grace of a bull in a china shop. D’Artagnan was stronger than he looked, his fist went straight into the attackers rib cage forcing the air out of him and sending him down by his comrade.
“Not even a real challenge.” He frowned at them in disappointment as he looked over at Athos with a half shrug. He’d been behaving recently, he had energy to spare since he hadn’t been using it to find trouble.
"It really was too easy" Athos agreed, "Obviously this crimewave isn't producing the highest calibre of criminals" he said moving to handcuff the guys he'd caught.
As he watched D'Artagnan he grinned, "You are incredibly hot right now" he said with a wink.
His second guy made a face at both of Athos’s comments and D’Artagnan stepped on him as he tied him up back to back with his friend. “Didn’t even get a real workout.” He sulked as he made sure his guys stayed put and trotted back over to Athos “Flatterer.”
"I'm simply stating the truth" he smiled, kicking one of his own guys as he made a noise. "And you know there are other ways to get a workout love" he teased as he leaned in to press a gentle kiss to D'Artagnan's lips.
“Someone might be a little biased.” he smirked, ignoring all the disgusted looks they were getting from his pile of criminals. He returned that kiss with a raised eyebrow. “Hm. However would that be?” Looking over at him skeptically before patting his chest teasingly and glancing about at the small crowd they had drawn. “I think we should probably call a squad and get out of here?” He nudged him, a little timid by the crowd of people gathering near by to see what the commotion had been. The one thing he missed was not having a badge to flash without giving away the super secret spy gig they had to disperse the crowd.
“You’re right of course” Athos said as he pulled out his phone and called for someone to come and collect these wannabe robbers. Luckily it didn’t take long and they were soon being hauled into a van and driven away. “Shall we go home?” Athos asked as the crowd disappeared and he wrapped an arm around his waist.
"Not too bad yourself anyway for the record love. " D'Artagnan looked over his shoulder as those guys were being hauled away. He smiled and reached for Athos’s hand. "Nope you promised a night out. It's not even Seven yet. . Besides that there are a few more places I wanna see." D'Artagnan still had too much adrenaline to get back in a car for home yet. He walked for a bit in silence before glancing over at Athos again. "I get that a lot." He said seemingly out of the blue. His tone a bit quieter. "Fag, queer those things. " He waved off the insults as though they were nothing, but they still annoyed him.
Athos smiled, “Then a night out we shall have” he said, pleased that everything that had happened hadn’t put D’Artagnan off being out. He’d worried those idiots might have caused him upset, but it seemed he’d been able to handle it.
“I’m sorry” Athos said when D’Artagnan spoke, squeezing his hand, “If I could spare you that I would. Nobody has the right to speak to you that way” It upset Athos a lot that D’Artagnan had been subjected to those kinds of insults.
“Not an excuse to go hide at home.” He looked over at him with a little smile, he wasn’t that fragile. The insults had been the most obnoxious part. He shrugged as he glanced over at a few shops they strolled past. “When I was arrested they refused my rights to a phone call because of it.” It was something he wouldn’t understand, how people could be treated that way because of a sexual orientation that had nothing to do with anyone else. “I won’t say it doesn’t bother me, but I don’t regret this.” When it came to Athos he would never regret loving him. “You’ve given me something worth waking up for.”
When he’d met him, the only reason he bothered getting out was work obligation. And then he’d been running on empty for a while thanks to his formerly corrupt station. He’d been worn down to just existing before Athos had come to pull him out.
“It was wrong of them to do that, you know that D’Artagnan” Athos said, “It was just one reason among many why I had them all relieved of duty and the corruption investigated” It had infuriated them that they had dared try to cause any harm to D’Artagnan.
He stopped them for a moment and pulled D’Artagnan close, “I’m glad you hold no regrets, and you honor me with that” he said, pressing his lips to D’Artagnan’s head. “I promise I’ll endeavor to always make you feel as loved and cherished as you are”
“I know. It just gets a little tiring is all. That people can still be that way. ” He added and gave him a surprised smile as he was pulled into his arms. “You always do.” D’Artagnan then leaned in to give him a gentle kiss. In spite of the things that happened, he hadn’t been turned off of being affectionate. He wasn’t sure he ever would be, he liked holding hands and being close. It was a thing he’d never had.
“I think there’s a chocolate shop just ahead and I need some.” He grinned as he reluctantly pulled back to let his fingers lace with Athos’s again.
Athos found he was very affectionate when it came to D'Artagnan, perhaps part of him recognised that he had been denied it so long and wanted to give the younger man that reassurance of closeness. Whatever it was they were both happy with it.
When they pulled back he smiled, "A chocolate shop hmm?" he said as if thinking about it, "Sounds good, lets go full you up with sugar" he squeezed his hand as they started to walk once again.
He’d really not had any true affection since his father was killed, and that was a hell of a lot different. There’d been a girl once, but it’d ended poorly. D’Artagnan mainly tried to forget about her. He was happy now, and it was the most he’d been in a long time.
“That sounds like a perfect plan. I also heard somewhere around here there’s a rooftop bar. Maybe we go get a couple drinks?” He leaned against him as he looked in a few windows. He knew Athos wasn’t the most social person ever, so here was no way he was going to let a few thugs ruin the evening.
As long as he was happy that was all Athos wanted. To make and see that D'Artagnan was happy was everything he needed. Nothing else came close to being as important.
"A rooftop bar? That does sound nice. We'll hunt it down and definitely have a drink or two" he nodded. It was true Athos wasn't the social sort but he would try for D'Artagnan because he knew it would please him. It wasn't so bad really, he got to hold his young fiances hand after all.
“It’s supposed to be fairly high end, but incredibly romantic from what the reviews said online. I found it when the forums traumatized me.” He grinned, he’d gotten a little side tracked after that. Well really side tracked with purpose. The forums had been entirely overwhelming. Just a rush of information he wasn’t sure how to process yet. He pointed out a place called the Chocolate Bar. “If they had drinks here too we’d just have to invest in this place and I’d never leave.”
“Romantic is promising” Athos said, “At least there was a good side effect from that experience” he added with a little squeeze. Reaching the chocolate shop Athos thought it looked really nice, very clean and smart looking.
“Maybe it’s a good thing they don’t have drinks here then, I’d miss you if you decided to stay here” he teased before the entered the shop and were immediately offered a try of some of the different flavoured chocolate.
"I almost wish there'd been more." But jinxing things was probably not a good idea. Still Athos knew of his ridiculous energy levels. He was unlikely to be surprised. "I almost never get out this way, but Aramis's macaroon shop is just around the corner too." He’d picked some up for their friend when he’d been shot, and had become a little addicted himself.
"You know the solution to that right? You'd just have to move in with me." He grinned as they were offered sugary things to try, D'Artagnan of course was a bit of a glutton, but it seemed no matter what he ate he didn't even gain a pound.
Athos wasn’t surprised at all. And in all honesty he had rather enjoyed taking those guys down too. But he wasn’t as gung ho about it as D’Artagnan was. “Ah so we will no doubt be returning here again. They are rather lovely macaroons” he smiled, even he couldn’t deny loving those. When he got a chance of course, if D’Artagnan didn’t eat them all.
“Ah of course. Live in chocolate and coffee heaven with you” he chuckled, before taking some of the offered chocolate too. Okay, maybe D’Artagnan had been right this place was good.
“Mhm. The owner always gives extras too.” Living in a house of chocolate and coffee would basically be a dream. He was a bit of a glutton with the chocolate samples, but it wasn’t like they weren’t going to be buying enough to make up for it all. He wasn’t even a little sorry. Buying chocolate was a very important decision.
“A chocolate house if we could. Where coffee comes out the sink.” He grinned over his shoulder and went back to browsing the rest of the candies.
