When it had snowed the year before, Mary Margaret had been out of town and missed it. By the time she’d come back, it had all melted, so now she wanted to take advantage of the fact that it was snowing in Orange County. However, were it not for David, she probably wouldn’t have suggested a walk through the park, but she thought it would be romantic and besides, her name was technically Snow. They had arranged to meet at the Starbucks near her shelter where they could get some hot chocolate then they would continue on to a nearby park. She didn’t know how long they would stay out, considering it was still snowing, but how ever long it was, she was just happy that she would be with David.
David was very used to snow. After a childhood in Wisconsin and then the slush of New York City, it was sort of nice that Orange County seemed to always give them snow. It made him nostalgic, which made him happy, and he couldn’t think of anyone better to share it with than Mary Margaret. When he got to the Starbucks, he spotted her quickly, and made a split second decision to kiss her cheek as he greeted her. “Hey,” he said, smiling. Hopefully his side wouldn’t bother him too much for the evening.
Having had more dreams, Mary Margaret was looking forward to seeing David to talk about them. True to David and Ruby’s word, her and Emma had returned to Storybrooke from the Enchanted Forest and being reunited had made her want to go see David right away, but she had decided that this would be the perfect way to talk about them instead of simply hanging around the shelter David worked at. She had just placed an order for two hot chocolates when she felt the kiss on her cheek and her lips turned up into an instant smile as she turned to face him, “Hey. How’re you?”
Seeing her grin made David grin. “I’m good,” he said. It was more or less the truth. “How are you?” The barista at the till gave the price for the order, so before Mary Margaret could pay, he pulled some money from his wallet to take care of it.
"I'm good as well." When David moved to pay, she was about to protest, but knew that he would do it any way, "You just have to be all Prince Charmingly, don't you?" She said instead of protesting as she gave him a small smile. She enjoyed spending time with David and hoped to get to spend even more time with him in the coming year.
“I guess it’s just in my nature.” He gave her an amused look, then laughed. “I promise you can pay next time.” Though both of them knew that wouldn’t be the case. He walked over to the bar to get their drinks, and, because it seemed fitting, put a dash of cinnamon on each of them. “All right. I think we’re all set. You really haven’t had snow like this before?”
Mary Margaret smiled as she watched him put the cinnamon in their drinks and thanked him when he handed her hers, “Well, I mean, I’ve been in other states in the winter, but I’ve lived here mostly my whole life and it’s never snowed like this when I’ve been out of state. The most I’ve seen is when it gets all slushy and gross.” Placing her cup down for a moment, she fixed her scarf before they ventured out into said snow, “But I assume you’re familiar with this sort of snow?” David just seemed like he knew so much. She couldn’t explain why she felt that way.
He led them both outside, then took Mary Margaret’s free hand as he started toward the nearby park. “Yeah. Until I was in my teens, we lived in this small town in Wisconsin. That’s why I have such a good flannel collection,” David teased, nudging her. “I like the snow. It makes me feel nostalgic.”
Mary Margaret couldn’t help but laugh at that and she nodded, “That would explain it.” She took a sip of her hot chocolate as they walked, “Why did you move out of Wisconsin?” Knowing so much about David in the dreams, sometimes Mary Margaret momentarily forgot that she didn’t actually know very much about him in the waking world and this seemed like a perfect opportunity to find out a few things.
David frowned a bit, though he looked more thoughtful than sad. “My mother,” he said, after a moment. He glanced at Mary Margaret with a smile, to let her know that it wasn’t a sore subject. “I don’t really know why we moved. I think she thought it would be better for me than being stuck where we were. We went to Manhattan and she ended up working as a housekeeper for someone who was on the board of this fancy school. He liked that she was a hard worker, so he got me a spot at the school.”
“What was New York like?” She asked as they continued walking, the park coming into view ahead of them, “I’d love to go someday. Especially around Christmas. I’d love to ice skate at Rockefeller Center.” There were lots of places Mary Margaret wanted to go and things she wanted to do, but running the shelter took a lot of time. Luckily, she had Ruby now to help out with a lot of stuff that she otherwise would have been too bogged down with to even be able to go out for a walk with David in the snow. “Oooh and a fancy school. Did you have to wear a uniform?”
He shrugged a bit. “Big.” David laughed. “It was a lot to adjust to. I’m still not really used to big cities, even living out here. I think, if I could, I’d live somewhere away from it all. Or find a small town. Like Storybrooke.” He flashed Mary Margaret an amused smile. “I did. It could have been worse than it was.”
“Someplace like Storybrooke would be nice. Sometimes I feel like I’m not one for big cities. I don’t think I could live someplace without wifi or someplace completely cut off, but a small town would be nice.” Mary Margaret sipped her drink as they walked into the park, over the freshly fallen snow, “I bet you looked cute in your uniform.” She glanced over at David, a small smile upon her lips.
David laughed, loudly. “Maybe I’ll try and dig up a picture.” He sipped his own hot chocolate, thoughtfully. “Maybe someday we can find a little place like Storybrooke together.” He was teasing, mostly, but the idea was nice. David could definitely envision a future with Mary Margaret.
“I wouldn’t mind it if you found one.” Mary Margaret smiled at the thought of seeing a picture of a younger David. When he mentioned finding a place like Storybrooke together, she felt her cheeks flush and was glad for the cold, because David wouldn’t be able to tell that she was blushing, “I wouldn’t mind that either.”
David laughed again. It just seemed so ridiculous. But it was nice to have the encouragement. “Maybe some day, then. Once we get you used to the snow.” He leaned over to press a kiss to her hair, brushing some flakes away.
Mary Margaret couldn’t help but laugh softly at that, a smile crossing her lips as she felt David’s lips on her head, “I guess I’d have to get used to it if I was gonna move to Maine, huh? I hear it gets really cold and snowy up there.”
“And foggy,” David added, “if you live near the ocean.” He saw a bench up ahead that was covered by trees, so it had no snow on it, and nodded at it. “That looks like the perfect place to sit and watch the snow fall.”
Mary Margaret glanced towards where David was indicating and smiled, “Looks like a good spot to me.” It might have been cold and the snow was falling, but Mary Margaret didn’t care if it meant the chance to cuddle with David on a bench and watch the snow fall.
