Athos adored the puppy, Grimaud, that D’Artagnan had gotten him. Though he saw it as their pet rather than just his. He knew it was taking D’Artagnan a little longer to warm up to him but he knew they’d be the best of friends soon. So far they’d been lucky and he was content to stick to chewing the toys they’d gotten him. He also followed Athos around like a shadow and had gotten him basket moved to the bedroom after he’d cried at night when they’d left him in the kitchen or living room. But Athos did draw the line at the bed. That was his and D’Artagnan’s and they were not sharing. Puppy’s basket was in the walk in wardrobe.
Currently Athos was sat on the sofa watching a movie with Grimaud sitting on his lap contentedly asleep for now.
Cute as it was, no D’Artagnan was not one for bed sharing. He was glad Athos had made it off limits for the critter, he really didn’t want to wake up with the dogs tongue on his face or something equally weird. D’Artagnan thought it was cute enough, but he wasn’t good at adjusting to new things. He didn’t hate it, he just didn’t really know how to interact with it beyond giving it a bowl of food or water.
D’Artagnan had been out getting food when he returned to that sight, and snapped yet another amusingly adorable picture of the pair of them. Though he thought Athos was the cuter of the two with it. “Hn. It is a little cute..when it’s not a tornado of fur and slobber.” He teased from behind as he watched the thing sleep in Athos’s lap.
Athos looked over at D’Artagnan and smiled, “He, D’Artagnan” Athos corrected, “You’ll love him soon. I know you will” he said lifting a hand to his boyfriend in order to tug him down and kiss him. “You know you’ll always be my favourite cutie right?” he teased a little, “Why don’t we take him for his first walk on the sand?” he suggested.
“Right. He.” D’Artagnan made a face, but eventually he’d get used to it-him. Whatever. Athos loved him and that was what mattered to him. He smiled a little as he was pulled down over the couch, leaning up to return that kiss with a grin. “And I won’t slobber in your ear. Unless you want me to.” He teased, but the critter began to wake at all the commotion and he almost softened some. " Yeah. We could do that. "
It was true Athos had fallen for the little guy almost immediately, he’d melted his heart instantly. But he wanted D’Artagnan to love him too. They were a little family after all. Athos would like for them to be a happy little family. “I rather like it when you slobber in my ear” he teased as the puppy stretched, yawned and then yipped happily when he noticed D’Artagnan. “I think Grimaud approves of the walk too”
At some point D’Artagnan would accept the puppy too. This was just how he got when new things happened. It took him a while to adjust to change. A smirk crept into his lips. "Maybe I'll just do that a little later than." He gave the rim of Athos’s ear a nip, and slid away from him as the puppy got up too. " I picked up Chinese for later. It's foggy out but I doubt he'll care? " eyeing the critter, he grabbed at a near by jacket.
“I’ll hold you to that” Athos smiled, knowing it would just be a matter of time. It actually meant a lot that D’Artagnan had gotten him for Athos knowing he wouldn’t be entirely comfortable with it. “You are the best” he told his younger boyfriend as he stood setting the puppy on the floor who instantly started running between them, “He won’t mind at all. We’ll keep him on the leash anyway” he said moving to get his own jacket.
He wanted Athos to see he was capable of accepting change on some levels. This was test number one and so far he was okay. He was still a little stiff when it came to the critter, but he’d at least stopped calling him an it now. He took one of Athos’ hands and raised an eyebrow at the puppy. “And you thought I had energy.” He commented off handedly.
Athos very much appreciated that D’Artagnan was trying and doing pretty well. When they first met he’d never have thought he’d like or get used to a dog but here they were and Athos was glad. He laughed at D’Artagnan’s comment, “You do just not puppy level apparently” he said squeezing his hand as he reached for the leash with the other one.
D’Artagnan leaned against Athos as he moved his foot aside as not to get trampled on too much by a puppy. “Hmmm..” He commented indifferently as he let Athos lead the way. His dark eyes remained on the critter for a moment before he stepped out of the house. “Aramis thinks I ought to get a pet too. I think ones enough.”
Athos smiled, D’Artagnan definitely had more energy than most people he knew but obviously not as much as he could have. Which Athos was rather happy about, he wasn’t sure he could handle much more. “Oh did he” Athos said, smiling as Grimaud pulled eagerly on the lead, “I think one is good for now too”
He was a little glad about that. A while back he was starting to get a complex when compared to a puppy so often. “Mhm. I don’t necessarily want my own, even if naming it after my own servant would be highly amusing.” He thought out loud, his servant hated him but the idea of having all the servants together as pets amused him more than it ought to. Just maybe there was a reason that man despised him so. “How we managed to keep our servants is beyond me.”
“Maybe you’ll change your mind once Grimaud works his charm on you” Athos teased, pressing a kiss to D’Artagnan’s cheek. “Maybe we were better than any alternative?” he suggested, “The best of a bad lot as it were”
“Think you could manage two mutts and me?” He teased lightly, and gave him an exasperated smile and for a while was actually quiet as they walked along. The beach actually seemed to relax even his worst hyper energy streaks. He was just relaxed until his feet ended up trapped into the leash and it sent him straight down into the sand in surprise, pulling Athos right along with him.
“I’d give it a good go” he smiled in response, enjoying their time together as they walked. He knew the beach had been a good idea when he’d brought the house. Despite D’Artagnan’s concerns the water had been a good influence. Before he knew what was happening he ended up sprawled in the sand with D’Artagnan on top of him, even as he’d gone down it seemed he’d made sure D’Artagnan wouldn’t get hurt. It was instinctive.
He still wasn’t able to swim well but at the very least he had gotten the hang of floating a bit. Water still scared him a bit when in it, but looking at it was calming. It did much more than any noises of the rainforest sleep alarm had ever done that was for sure. Even his horrid sleep patterns seemed to have improved due to the soothing sounds. He rested his head against Athos’s shoulder for a moment until he was nearly eating sand instead. Landing on top of Athos he raised an eyebrow in surprise. A smirk played over his lips after a moment and he laughed. “...You planned it this way didn’t you.” A teasingly suggestive tone before he made a move to get up. “We could have stayed in you know.” He looked Athos over to make sure he hadn’t actually hurt him somehow.
Floating was a big improvement to nothing in Athos’ view and they were slowly working on overcoming the fear of the water itself. They’d get there eventually but even if not at least the water was helping in other ways. He laughed at D’Artagnan’s comment stealing a kiss before he managed to move too far away, “I had a word with Grimaud before we left” he teased with a grin as he got up, “Oh don’t worry, we still have lots of time when we get back home”
D’Artagnan really wasn’t sure where his fear had even begun of water, it wasn’t that he had any seriously traumatic things happen around it or anything like that. He just found it intimidating. He’d never bothered learning when he was younger as a result. He could go in partial ways, but beyond that he wasn’t much of a fan of actually being in it. “I should have known buying this mutt was going to end like this.” He mused as he returned that kiss and reached to brush a bit of sand away from Athos’s cheek gently. “You’re ridiculous sometimes you know that?”
Athos had always rather liked the water, though ironically he preferred a pool to the ocean. But luckily they had both here. He was a strong swimmer and D’Artagnan needn’t worry while he was around, he’d keep him safe. “Mmm a happy side effect of dog ownership” he said smiling as D’Artagnan brushed away the sand. “Sometimes yes, you bring that out in me you know? Ease my grumpy soul”
“You can still say that with sand in your ears hm?” He teased as he gave him a little nudge, watching the puppy try to scramble on ahead. “All this time and you still can make me blush.” D’Artagnan ought to be used to compliments like that, but he really wasn’t. Athos was always saying just the right thing. It was almost like some kind of dream. If it was one D’Artagnan really didn’t want to wake up, he was content with Athos. His fingertips tangled with the others as he recaptured his hand. “I can’t do all that much.” Sometimes Athos being at his height was beneficial, it meant he could lean on him easily during walks like this without it being awkward as he retook his place by his side. “My friend wants to meet you.”
“A little sand doesn’t hurt” Athos replied, keeping hold of the leash so the puppy couldn’t run off down the beach. I hope to always be able to make you blush” he said, because he found D’Artagnan absolutely adorable when he blushed. “Nonsense” Athos said, squeezing his fingers, “You are amazing” he insisted. He too liked that they were of similar heights, it did make walking together like this a lot easier. Looking over he raised an eyebrow, “Oh? Which friend would this be?”
“Well no, but landing on a lot of it does.” D’Artagnan was blushing again and he looked away shyly. He wasn’t really a shy type, but when it came to Athos it was fairly easy. The man had a way with words. “Rose. I thought maybe a dinner? She’s fairly new around the area.” D’Artagnan was starting to warm up to the puppy already as he watched it walk along, it was sorta cute the way it would stumble in pockets of sand at times.
“Better than concrete” Athos grinned, pressing a kiss to D’Artagnan’s cheek just because he could. Athos was a firm believer that the only reason he had a way with words was thanks to D’Artagnan, he brought out the silly romantic side of him like no other. “That’s a nice idea” he nodded, “Find out if she has any allergies or dislikes and I’ll come up with a good menu” Athos enjoyed cooking, he found it relaxed him and cooking for a friend of D’Artagnan’s was a chance to show off a little. He laughed at the puppy too, watching him run around and chase a shadow.
D’Artagnan loved all sides of Athos, but it made him feel wanted and loved that he was able to get those types of emotions from him. He'd lived a lonely life after his father had died. Having someone who wanted to hold and touch him was refreshing after years of keeping people at arms length, afraid to get hurt. He smiled at that. "I think she'll like that. We also ought to have Aramis and Porthos over again soon. " D'Artagnan just shrugged. "I'm less annoyed with them now I think. " it just took him time for change. That had been a huge change.
Athos hadn’t expected to love D’Artagnan as deeply as he did but he wouldn’t have it any other way now. He hadn’t really been someone who was prone to public displays of affection but with D’Artagnan it came as naturally as breathing. “Good. You’re right we should” Athos nodded, “Me too. It’s not something we’d do or be happy with but then we aren’t all the same and we need to respect their choices”
D’Artagnan just smiled as Athos agreed to cook. He enjoyed Athos’s cooking. The brunette on the other hand was still awful. He could manage a few simple meals Aramis had taught him but beyond basic pastas he had an intense difficulty waiting for meals to properly cook. "I don't respect it but I can accept it. " He shrugged as he took off his shoes and held them in his free hand. "I don't want them out of our lives. "
D’Artagnan tried to cook and Athos appreciated it every time, “That’s all we need” he said simply, “They’re our best friends, they won’t ever be out of our lives” It was simple in his eyes, they may argue and disagree sometimes but they were all the strongest of friends.
“I don’t think they’re looking for us to respect it at least.” He shrugged. Aramis nor Sharon had shoved it down their throats in any case. They seemed to be letting the pair decide how to react to it all for themselves, which in D’Arts case was a much better approach. Any forcefulness would only cause him to push them all away. “I don’t want to lose anyone again.” He had a recurring fear of going back to the way things had been before he met them when things got tense.
It wasn’t that Athos respected it but more that he respected it was their choice and not something Athos himself got to decide for them. “You won’t. I promise you that” he said, raising D’Artagnan’s hand to his lips, “We’ll always be together”
He nodded to that and smiled some, he couldn’t fathom going back to the way things were. The way they were now he was happy. He hadn’t been allowed to be happy most of his life and he wasn’t ready to give it up. He let his fingers lace with Athos’s own and watched the puppy with a slightly more soft expression than the day before. “It-he isn’t so bad..” He commented as they walked along, he looked over their shoulder and found they’d walked quite a ways from the house. D’Artagnan didn’t mind where they went as long as it was together.
