Rose was excited that her friend was free today as well. She liked having longer days off when not up in the air, but it could prove to be rather boring as well. Everyone else had a pretty steady job so hanging out with people wasn’t always so easy. She had tried to make it work around everyone else’s schedules as best as possible, which usually turned into fun adventures.
It wasn’t a long walk to Will’s, another reason Rose was so grateful for moving in with John. She was there in about fifteen minutes and knocking on the door. She wondered what they might try to make today; he had mentioned at their last meeting doing something easy like spaghetti. As long as it was something she could do and impress John with, she was down for any challenge at the moment.
Will was always happy to see Rose, she was fun and a really good friend. And of course, they had the added British connection too. Luckily their schedules fit around each other fairly well since Will took classes and was a good enough student that missing one here or there wasn’t a problem.
He had the ingredients for a lasagne all ready to show her, he figured that would be easy yet impressive enough. Especially with kind of homemade garlic bread. When he heard the knock on the door he headed over and opened it with a grin. “Hey beautiful” he greeted her with a hug and ushered her inside, “How are you doing?”
“Hey!” Rose happily returned the hug, leaning up to give him a kiss on the cheek as well. “So far so good. No problems getting here, so that’s always good.” Rose always hoped that each time she was able to travel around the city unmolested, it meant the crime rate was about to go down. No end in sight, but she remained optimistic.
“Thanks for having me over too! I’m ready to start cooking!” She rubbed her hands together, eager to start but a little anxious. She prayed it was something easy and nothing that could potentially burn down his flat; she didn’t want to be responsible for becoming an arsonist for a friends place!
“What are we thinking for today?”
“Glad to hear it. Can’t have you getting bothered” Will said, he was planning on walking Rose home later no matter what time it was. He wasn’t going to risk his friend for the sake of a fifteen minute walk.
“Anytime. You know that, you’re always welcome here love” Will said easily before laughing, “Enthusiasm I like that. I thought we’d try lasagne, it looks impressive but is a pretty simple dish to prepare”
“Sounds perfect!” Rose looked around the kitchen and saw all the things Will had laid out for them. “Wow, you really prepared too! You’re like superman!” She gave him a wink, walking further in. “Do we get cute matching aprons and everything?” She smirked as she looked through the various ingredients. Hopefully it would all be written down so she wouldn’t have to remember everything the next time we went to the market.
“I owe you for this too,” she said, leaning against the counter. “Maybe I’ll surprise you by having John teach me a dish to prepare!”
“I am much better than superman I’ll have you know” Will grinned at her as he saw how impressed she was. He liked being organised and he had already written everything down neatly and clearly. It was a side effect of being an English student, or at least that was Will’s excuse. “Ha, you tease” he said before throwing an apron at her. Hers read Apprentice Cook while his read Head Chef.
“Don’t worry about it, I think we’ll have a fun yet educational time” he winked at her.
Rose’s mouth might have dropped open a little when he handed her her apron. “You just happened to have these?” She asked, squinting her eyes a bit at him as she put it on. “I’m beginning to think you really are Superman and you rushed out to get these!” Her eyes returned to normal then widened. “Wait, you don’t dream of being Superman do you?” Hey, it was a possibility!
Rose laughed at his innuendo, shaking her head. “Alright Head Chef, where do we begin?” She glanced down at all the ingredients, finding it hard to believe it would all come together in an edible dish.
“What can I say? I’m well prepared” Will told her with a grin before laughing, “Actually I am far better than superman. I’m a shadowhunter” he informed her, “Trust me when I tell you all about it you’ll agree I’m on of the coolest people you know”
Will couldn’t help it, it was ingrained in him to flirt and have fun. “Okay, so first we make the sauce because those jar sauces are not good enough” he said, picking up some of the tomatoes as he spoke.
Rose had just opened her mouth to ask what a shadowhunter was, but shut it with his next statement. She was always so curious about dreams, but this wasn’t the time! “I’ll hold you to that, because I wanna know more!” She pointed a finger at him before rubbing her hands together.
“Wait, wait wait, we’re going to make the sauce from scratch?” She looked at Will, putting one hand on her hip. “I told you that I can barely make mac ‘n cheese, right?”
“I promise I will tell you when we have time” Will said with a smile holding his hands up.
“It’s easy, trust me” Will told her, “I’ve written everything down step by step. I’m going to make you do everything so when you come to do it you won’t have to try and remember what I did okay?”
“But I can still call if I forget anything or get something on the cards and can’t read them?” Rose didn’t know why she felt so nervous; what could possibly go wrong while cooking? Better not think about it or it might come true! Rose steeled herself, ready for the first step. “Alright, so first things first! Cut the tomatoes?” She looked at Will and then down at the cards he had written.
“Of course you can. I’ll make sure I’m at home the night you cook and I’ll even skype you to help if you need me to” Will assured her, finding it rather adorable that she was so worried.
Instructing her was pretty simple and she listened well, “Okay now strain the béchamel sauce through the colander” he said as he turned to retrieve a tea towel to wipe down the side for her.
Having Will insist to help her as much as possible helped calm her nerves a little and she nodded, ready for the first time. If he had this much belief in her, she needed to have a little more confidence in herself!
She followed each step carefully, double checking her measurements and making sure everything came out perfect. Well, as perfect as sauce could be! She found that it was actually a lot of hard work and she was working up a sweat.
But she pulled the pot holders out and moved to dump the sauce into the colander to separate. “How do people do this all the time?” she asked, wiping her forehead after putting the pot down. “This is a work out in itself! I’m impressed!” She glanced down at the sauce they had just completed, surprised at being able to actually make something.
“We did it!” She had a huge grin on her face and she held her hand up for a high five. “One part done! Only a thousand more to go, right?”
Will was impressed so far, she’d been working hard and following instruction well. He was sure she’d have no problem recreating what they’d done so far.
“Well I admit I might be making it a little harder with the sauces but it’s only because I have such faith in you” Will admitted, “Which was obviously right because you are doing so well” he added proudly, he knew she was awesome.
They continued going through the recipe with only a few hiccups here and there.
Rose couldn’t help but blush a little at Will’s praise and became even more determined to continue her good work. She may have gotten a little frazzled here and there when she needed to multi task, but it was definitely helpful to have Will there to help if it ever got to be too much.
Now everything was simmering and she was waiting for the pasta to be done. “I dunno if I can do this without you!” she teased, brushing a strand of hair from out of her eyes with the back of her hand. “How can you keep everything together? Remember what needs to be stirred while something else has to be taken out?”
Will really quite enjoyed it, of course it definitely helped that Rose was such a good student and they had fun too. When she made a mistake he pointed it out they laughed corrected it and moved on. It was the best way as far as he was concerned.
“Well apart from the fact I’m a natural genius” he winked at her, “I just find there’s sort of a natural flow to cooking. And I was taught from a young age, maybe it’s kind of like learning a language” he mused.
Rose made a face and laughed. “Bugger I’ve been terrible at learning languages! You should hear my French! It’s terrible!” She shook her head, realization dawning on her. “No wonder I’ve been a rubbish cook! It’s just not in my talent wheel.” She gave a shrug, watching as the water boiled the lasagna pasta. “At least this part is easier, right? We just have to put everything together and let it bake?”
“Maybe that wasn’t the best analogy” Will said, though that is how he thought of it. There was a flow and language all it’s own in recipes and cooking. “This part is definitely easier, we layer it all in the dish and then let the oven work it’s magic”
“Thank goodness for the oven!” Rose laughed and cracked her knuckles. “Alright, so we start with the pasta, yeah?” This part was definitely the easiest and Rose found that she actually enjoyed being able to piece it all together; almost like a food puzzle!
Once everything was in the oven and baking, Rose collapsed into a chair. “Whew! Well...I think I could do it by myself. I might Skype or Facetime you if it gets really bad. As long as I don’t burn down the flat, I guess we’ll be alright! Worst case, we’ll have to order pizza.” She gave him a wink in jest. “Any wine or anything we can have while we wait for it?” She didn’t mean to seem like a demanding guest, but it sounded like a good pairing with lasagna and Rose thought the two of them deserved it after their first cooking experience together.
It was definitely like a food puzzle and Rose seemed to excel at that part. But then it was the most fun, layering everything and then just waiting for it to cook.
“You’ll be fine, I have complete faith in you and should you need reassurance I will be around” Will told her laughing as she collapsed. “I have the perfect cabernet sauvignon actually, I recommend it to go with the dish” he added with a smile. He’d cheated and looked that bit up since wine wasn’t a specialty of his. And Will agreed they definitely deserved it after their cooking lesson. Bringing a glass over to her he held his own up, “To Miss Rose Tyler Apprentice Cook extraordinaire”
