Who: Billy Kaplan and Kate Bishop
When: Mid January
Where: Street
What: Stopping a mugging
Rating/Warnings: Low/None
Status: Complete

Kate and Billy had gone to the movies. Kate was absolutely loving having Billy as her bff. He was funny and smart, and she didn’t have to worry about any of that sexual stuff getting in the way. There weren’t any weird feelings or anything. And they could check out guys together. (Not that he did much of the checking. He had a boyfriend.)

They were on their way out of the movie theater. Kate was carrying a bag with some leftover popcorn in it, munching as they talked about the movie they’d just seen. It wasn’t exactly a bad neighborhood, but it wasn’t one of the nicer ones, either. And the streets were pretty clear. Several streetlights were out. Everything was quite eerie.

Billy loved being Kate’s bff. Being out with her kept his mind off the confusing situation with Justin and Teddy and what the hell he was going to do. He was able to forget all that and just have a fun time. They got along as well here as they did in the dreams and he was grateful for that, even if it did give weight to the idea that the dreams may indeed be the ‘reality’ as Teddy was convinced.

Reaching over he grabbed a handful of popcorn and was about to comment on the soundtrack for the film they’d seen when they heard a scream. Looking at each other it didn’t take long for both of them to nod and run off in the direction it had come from.

Kate jumped a little at the sound of the scream, and her eyes locked with Billy’s for a moment. Then they nodded, and turned to run toward it, instead of away. Of course, Kate didn’t have a foil or a bow and quiver with her. It wasn’t the sort of thing that she brought to the movies.

Once they reached the alleyway, they could see there were a couple of big thugs ganging up on a small woman. Kate picked up a length of pipe that’d broken off one of the nearby buildings and brandished it like a club. “Hey!” She cried out.

Both thugs turned to face her, one still gripping the poor woman’s shirt in his meaty fist.

“Let her go” Billy said sending out a small stream of fire to the mans hand causing him to release the woman. Luckily his practice with his pyrokinetic powers meant the womans shirt didn’t catch on fire.

“Now why don’t you both come along with us and hand yourselves in” he said, “It’ll be a lot easier, trust me”

The thug with the burnt hand looked a bit shocked at the sight of magic. He shook his injured hand off in the air as the woman he’d been holding fell to the ground in a heap.

Thug Number Two turned his full attention on Billy and Kate, cracking his knuckles. “...yeah, right. You just made a loooot of trouble for yourself, little man.” He stepped forward.

Kate swung the pipe around, moving forward. She was getting the feel for the thing--the balance, the weight of it. It would actually make quite a nice weapon. “My friend’s right. You’re really gonna regret it if you don’t come along quietly.”

“Maybe we oughta do what they say--” Thug Number One said, shakily.

But the other cut him off. “Shut up, Floydd. You take the small one. I want the little girl.” He grinned a big grin, showing off crooked, yellow teeth.

That seemed to spur Thug Number One back into business. He turned his attention to Billy, though he didn’t look completely sure this was the right idea.

Billy, who wasn’t impressed by being referred to as ‘the small one’, simply raised an eyebrow at his attacker. Who, after hesitating, moved to attack Billy who teleported himself so he was behind his attacker and then set his shirt on fire.

Duck, duck, parry, swing, thunk, and Kate had clobbered the big guy over his head with the pipe. There was one quick moment of frantic panic where she thought she might have accidentally killed the poor fellow, but after he fell to the ground she could see him breathing.

The girl in the alleyway let out a sob. “They were trying to--they tried to--they were going to--” but she couldn’t get out any coherent sentences. She was busy sobbing all over herself.

“Maybe we should call the cops?” Kate asked Billy.

Billy’s assailant meanwhile had actually ran himself into a wall while trying to put out the fire which had been very handy. So he lay not far from his friend.

“It’s okay, everything will be fine” Billy assured her, “Are you hurt?” he asked and got a shake of the head in response.

Turning to Kate he looked at her then them then her again, “We could just take them there? Dump them outside then get her to the hospital, just in case” he indicated the woman.

“Yeah, good idea.” Kate said. She turned to the woman and stepped over, cautiously. “It’s gonna be okay.” She said, gently. “You’re safe now.”

Though, inside, Kate was freaking out. Her heart was thundering. That had been fantastic. So exciting, and thrilling, and she wanted to do it again. Help people. Save people. Be a force of good on the world. She gave Billy a grin over her shoulder. Yes! Amazing!!
