Lexi didn’t usually over abuse her compulsion. She didn’t try to get things for free all the time at stores or make people do things they wouldn’t otherwise do, but every now and then, she would use it to get a free cup of coffee or drink at a bar. Today however, was one of those rare days when she used it, mostly because upon placing her order at Starbucks, she realized that somehow she’d forgotten to put her wallet back in her purse the night before after ordering a pair of boots on-line. If anyone had been behind her in line, Lexi probably would have just forgotten about it, but considering she was the only one there and no other baristas were in the immediate vicinity of the register, she leaned forward a little, after placing her order and made eye contact with the girl behind the counter and told her that the drink was on the house, which the barista repeated after her, Lexi and the barista’s pupils dilating as the compulsion took affect.
Lissa was in a Starbucks, she had been sitting at the one little desk doing some school work, this was her second coffee house of the day, the first didn’t work out because of loud obnoxious people. She had gotten up to use the restroom then get something to munch on, she had just approached the bake case to the right of the register while she waited her turn. For some reason the hair on her arms raised and she glanced up to see the girl in line in front of her lean on the counter near the barista and the barista’s hypnotic reaction to the girl. Alarmed, Lissa froze she didn’t know what to do except wish her best friend Rose was there, thinking at least Rose wouldn’t freeze up and would know how to handle the weirdness.
It wasn’t until Lexi leaned back after the barista had repeated what she’d said that Lexi realized someone else had stepped up in line behind her. Glancing at the girl, she wondered, briefly, if she should compel her to forget what she had just seen, but that was something that Damon would do and Lexi didn’t want to become him, “Secret menu.” She said, thinking quick, “Didn’t want to give it away to everyone.” Sure, she knew how ridiculous it sounded and probably could have done better, but she was taken off guard a little.
Lissa stood frozen even after the girl addressed her, it was like her brain couldn’t fully comprehend what just happened. She knew what the girl had just told her obviously wasn’t what was going on, but she also knew that after seeing what she just did that she should just leave it be. Completely freaked out she just nodded at the girl and gave a shaky smile. Lissa nibbled on her bottom lip as she looked at the fattening baked goods in the case, pretending to try to decide what she wanted.
It was obvious that Lexi had weirded the girl out and she wondered once again if she shouldn't just compel her to forget it. That would be the easier thing to do and it would leave this girl not being quite so confused, but there was another person getting in line behind the other girl so the time had passed, unless she followed her out or something, but then that was just making things even more complicated. She wasn't even a full vampire yet and already her life was getting confusing. "The brownies are really good." She said, attempting to break the awkwardness.
She tried not to flinch or react to the girl acknowledging her again. But Lissa figured she should try and make an effort to help the weirdness pass, even tho she still had goosebumps. Slightly relieved another customer was behind her she tried a smile, "Brownies and anything chocolate is a good idea."
Lexi chewed her bottom lip for a moment or two as she nodded in response to what the other girl said. She had moved aside enough to allow the blond to place her own order while she waited for her free drink. “Chocolate is always a good idea. Well, I suppose there are certain occasions when chocolate probably isn’t the greatest idea at that moment in time, but so far I’ve only come across a handful of those times.”
Lissa placed her order quickly enough, although she did observe the barista rather closely as she did wondering if they were truly ok. She hesitated moving to wait for her drink, but really had no choice since there was other customers behind her. Listening to the girl give her idle conversation was hard, it was even harder to be polite and yet make direct eye contact. Glancing at her before returning her attention to the barista making their drinks she replied, “I don’t think I’ve ever come across a time when chocolate wasn’t the greatest idea. It seems to make things better.”
Lexi could tell that the other girl was a little weary of her and she honestly didn’t blame her. She was sure that the moment they parted, she was going to text someone and tell them about the crazy girl she’d run into at the coffee shop. Then again, Lexi probably wasn’t going to see this girl again after this, so she shouldn’t have worried what the girl thought about her. Any other time Lexi wouldn’t have cared what anyone thought about her. “Chocolate is the universal cure all for everything ever.”
Lissa glanced at the girl as the barista announced a drink or two, frankly she didn’t listen very well to anyone but the girl. Sure, she freaked her out but she was also slightly intriguing, Lissa was warring with herself if what she saw was something to be concerned about. Nodding her agreement about chocolate she replied easily, “I would say coffee is as well, or tea.”
“I’m not so sure on coffee. I’m more of a frappe or latte girl, myself.” Lexi glanced over at the barista as she heard her name called along with the other girl’s name, not that she knew the other girl’s name, but since she’d been right behind her in line, she assumed it was hers. Grabbing both drinks, she held the other one out to the other blond, “I hope this is yours. Otherwise a cranky under-caffeinated person is gonna come yelling at me in about two seconds.”
“Nope it’s mine.” Lissa replied taking the drink and trying to give a friendly smile. She took a sip and then looked up at the girl, “It was nice to meet you..” She kind of tapered off since she technically didn’t meet the girl and it wasn’t necessarily nice.
“Nice to meet you too,” Lexi said, taking a sip of her drink. She didn’t think that she’d have to follow the girl outside and compel her to forget this whole thing, so she was alright with simply leaving, “Hope you have a good day.” Lexi was gonna have to learn from this experience for the future.
