Bonnie let out an audible whoop of happiness as she passed the "Orange County" sign. She'd been driving for hours, but she was finally home after months away. She still had a few miles to go, but just passing that county marker felt pretty damn good to her. Smiling, she navigated the turns without even having to think about it. 20 minutes later, she was pulling into her driveway. Bonnie didn't stay at home for long, though. She was just there long enough to do a quick unpacking before she headed out again. It had been 3 months and Bonnie had a desperate need to see her friends. She headed for Caroline's place first. Elena's old house was right next door and the place she shared with Damon wasn't far, but considering her newlywed status, she thought maybe stopping by over there unannounced might not be the best idea. Surprising Caroline, though? That, she could absolutely do. Minutes later, she pulled up outside the condo Caroline shared with some other friends. Bonnie excitedly jumped out of the car and marched up to the door, practically bouncing as she knocked and waited for someone to answer. Caroline was still a bit wary around people. The last thing the blonde wanted to do was hurt anyone and she had already bitten two people. Luckily she had been able to stop herself but still it worried her. She hadn’t left her place at all since her birthday, but was finally allowing others to come visit. Not to mention Lexi and Katherine still lived with her and somehow she had managed to not bite them. She wasn’t expecting anyone to be stopping by at the moment though, when she heard a knock on the door. No one else was home at the moment, so she went to answer it. “Oh my god!” She couldn’t help but exclaim once the door was open and saw one of her best friends standing outside. It had been months since she had seen Bonnie. Caroline immediately greeted her with a hug. “What are you doing here!?” she asked stepping back and letting Bonnie enter the condo. Seeing that look of surprise on Caroline’s face was more than worth the drive over here and the chance that she could have found her not home or busy or whatever. Okay, so Bonnie hadn’t really stopped to think about all the ways this surprise Caroline plan could have gone wrong, but the important thing was that it was going exactly like she’d pictured it. Grinning, Bonnie hugged Caroline back before going inside. “Oh, you know, I was in the neighborhood...” She laughed and shook her head. “I just got home, like, 15 minutes ago and I thought I’d come see what you were up to.” Which was Bonnie-ese for checking up on her friend. From phone calls and Skype chats, she knew Caroline had been going through some stuff lately and this was the first time in months she could actually offer some best friendly comfort in person. “Well I’m so glad you did” and she honestly was. Caroline had seriously been going out of her mind with boredom the past week. Even if it was for the best that she keep to herself it was driving her crazy. “Wait, you’re home?” she couldn’t keep the excitement out of her voice. “As in you are moving back here?” Things really weren’t the same without Bonnie around. And now that Elena was married Caroline hardly ever saw her anymore, it was nice to have her other childhood best friend back. She ushered Bonnie inside leading her to Caroline’s bedroom. “So tell me all about New York” the blonde said as she plopped down on her bed. “Did you meet any cute boys?” "I'm home. For good this time, barring any more family disasters." Bonnie couldn't be mad at her grams for needing her, that hadn't been her fault or anyone's, but she was definitely ready to have her life back. "In New York? Tons of cute boys," she said as she settled herself on the floor by the bed and grinned up at Caroline. "In San Francisco- well, I'm sure they have cute boys there, but they don't really hang out in my grandma's neighborhood. I guess I just have to live vicariously through you and Elena." “How is your grams doing?” Caroline had been so excited to see Bonnie she hadn’t even thought to ask that. “There is nothing to live vicariously through with me” Caroline said with a sigh. Not that she wanted to date anyone anyways. That was so not her thing. “So that just leaves Elena but she is married to Damon” she wrinkled her nose at that. "She's great, better than ever." It was a relief, really. Bonnie might think it was a pain in the ass to have to put off school and be separated friend her friends, but when her grandma had gotten sick, she'd definitely been scared she might lose her. She was really glad to have those fears behind her now. She laughed a little at the face Caroline was making now. "Oh, come on, Care, Damon's not bad for an old guy," she objected, "and he seems to make Elena happy." That was the important thing in Bonnie's book. She hadn't exactly approved when Damon and Elena first got together, but now? She was pretty over her issues and happy for them. "Anyway, you might not 'date,'" she added, making the air quote gesture, "but from the stuff you've told me, your romantic life is far from boring, at least compared to mine." Caroline use to have the same theory as Bonnie. As long as Elena was happy that was what mattered. But the blonde could no longer overlook all of Damon’s flaws and the way he treated her the majority of the time. “Yeah yeah” she simply replied not wanting to give it another moment of her attention. “I’d take boring over the mess I am in any day” Caroline replied. And it was true. She had no idea where things with her and Nik were right now. He probably never wanted to see her again and she couldn’t really blame him. The fact was the Bonnie didn't even know Damon that well. She kind of suspected there was something Caroline wasn't telling her, some reason she didn't like him, but she decided not to push it for right now. She wasn't really here to talk about Elena and Damon, anyway. Her brow lifted at Caroline's next words. "Did something else happen with that whole... thing?" She wondered aloud. She'd tried to keep in touch with her friends while she was gone, but it wasn't like being here with them. A lot more had happened, but she couldn’t exactly tell Bonnie that. If she told Bonnie she was a vampire her friend might think she was crazy. It was best to wait until she started dreaming and ease her into it. Hopefully she would never dream though. “Not really” Caroline replied with a shrug. “Things have just been super awkward since Nik kissed me, we kind of argued on my birthday but I think things are okay now” honestly she had no idea if things were okay or not. They had sorted out all the awkwardness, but then she had bitten him. Now she had no clue where they stood. "So, what's messy about it, then?" Bonnie felt like she was missing something, she felt like she was missing a lot of things, actually. Maybe that was unavoidable with how long she'd been away, but she still didn't like not knowing the feeling of not really knowing what was going on with her best friends. "C'mon, Care," she prodded gently, "You're a horrible liar. I know there's something you're not telling me and you know I'll get it out of you eventually, so you might as well fess up." How was Caroline suppose to explain things to Bonnie without admitting she was a vampire? The last thing she wanted to do was scare her best friend. “He just stopped by yesterday and we cleared everything up. He knows about Enzo now, not that I was trying to hide it, I just had no reason to tell him before. But anyways he left kind of abruptly so I’m not exactly sure what’s going on” that was basically what happened, minus the whole bite in the middle, but Bonnie didn’t need to hear that part. “So, here’s a thought,” Bonnie said, “you could always call him and ask.” She’d always been kind of a direct person, so that’s what she’d do if she was in the situation. Which she kind of was, because she and Matt hadn’t have The Talk yet or even told any of their friends that they were doing whatever it was they were actually doing. But that was different. They’d been spending a lot of time together, too, and they’d been flirting and kissing, but she wasn’t really in any rush to define it. Or admit to her friends that she’d kind of developed feelings for Elena’s ex-boyfriend. Besides, they weren’t talking about Bonnie’s love life right now, they were talking about Caroline’s. “He said he would text me. I’ll give him his space” Caroline shrugged. She wasn’t about to push anything on Nik. He probably needed some time to process everything that had happened and she didn’t blame him. She didn’t want to scare him even more. “But enough about him. I want to hear more about your year.” Of course she had heard bits and pieces throughout the year, but now it was time for some real details. “There’s really not much to tell,” Bonnie told her. Not much she was ready to share, anyway, even with her best friend. “Sarah Lawrence was great and New York was awesome, but it was still just school, you know? Not much different from being here except that I was missing all my friends the whole time.” “Yeah I know what you mean” Caroline agreed. She had felt the same way when she had been away for a semester. “Well you are back now. No more missing us.” |
