Damon had decided pretty early in that dealing with his dream persona and integrating it into his life was probably better than trying to work against him. He wasn't a bad guy, although his dream self had a different valuation of human life. He had Elena, who kept him content, and Stefan, who he would have to worry about, but he was stable.
"Well, no. More me than you really, at least immediately. Vampires are very attracted to blood though. Even a well fed one likes to tap a vein. I'm going to try and keep my relatives from snapping, pun intended. That may be a challenge." Then there were those times when just dealing with vampirism seemed completely unreal, even if he was one.
