Who: Derek and Stiles
What: The definition of stalking.
When: Tuesday, September 2nd, early evening.
Where: Stiles' house.
Status: Completed 9/10

It was a nagging feeling. Like seeing something out of the corner of your eye but when you turned there was nothing there. Except in this case, there was something there:

A car.

A black late model Camaro, to be specific.

He'd noticed it outside of Stark Tower when he'd driven home from work, because even though this was LA where nice cars were a dime a dozen, it was still a nice car. And then he'd seen another one when he'd stopped by the grocery store on the way home. Which, huh, maybe it was one of those things where you swore you never heard a song before in your life, but then once you hear it, you keep hearing it everywhere, when really it was just the fact that you were aware of the song that made it seem like it was everywhere?

It was a nagging feeling, though, that maybe it was the same car. And that maybe, just maybe, Elena's husband was inside it, was actually following him to make good on his threat now that Elena had been let go.

It was nothing to do with Stiles, Tony and Pepper had assured him. It was Stark Enterprises zero-tolerance policy. So, it wasn't his fault, but Stiles couldn't help but think that Elena and her husband wouldn't take it that way; would, in fact, blame him.

He took the long way home to the small house he shared with his dad, circled around, and approached it from the opposite direction he usually did. When he parked his Focus in the driveway and popped the trunk he couldn't help but feel that prickling of awareness, like someone was watching him.

It took two trips to get all the groceries inside, and when he came out the final time, there it was:

The black Camaro, the same one he'd seen all evening, he was sure of it, parked a few houses down.

He locked up his car, punched in Tony's number though he didn't actually dial, and stalked towards the car, determinedly, approaching head on. He could make out a dark-haired form inside, but in the dim blue of twilight it wasn't until he was next to the driver's side that he recognized the person inside.

His stomach twisted, heart thudding erratically as he stared at Derek, disbelieving.

Then, surprise turned to confusion, and he swallowed, steeling himself as he knocked on the window.

Stiles has noticed that Derek has a special talent for saying exactly the wrong thing.

"Right," Stiles repeats, bitterly. He'd been disappointed, but now he's embarrassed at having been called out for it. "What I want. News flash: all Stiles find all Dereks attractive. You don't have to rub it in, okay?"

He has to get out. The smell of leather and Derek is fucking with his sense memory, so he gets out, shuts the door with maybe more force than is strictly necessary, and begins to cross the road.

The house where he and his dad live isn't on a particularly busy street, but Stiles is distracted and not thinking, so he doesn't see or hear the SUV that's going too fast until it's too late.

"Jesus -- "

Derek had been a few steps away when Stiles had set foot in the street, but rushes forward at the last minute to grab him and haul him back.

His heart is hammering in his chest and his ears are ringing but he can feel Stiles's body against his, solid and still breathing. He keeps his arms tight around Stiles while he tries to slow his heart to a reasonable pace.

"Don't. Do that."

Adrenaline is a familiar friend that Stiles really wishes he'd see less of.

In the span of a few moments, he's been embarrassed, annoyed, paralyzed with fear, and then miraculously, saved, and relieved.

And if Derek asks, that's what Stiles is going to claim it is--his body's undue and potentially adverse reaction to stress and life-threatening situations.

He can feel Derek, his grip past snug and verging on painful, can feel the line of his body, hard, because even here, even in this world, Derek is 100% muscle. It must be his own adrenaline-fueled reaction that gives him the strength to turn and press his mouth against Derek's, the kiss hungry, if not outright demanding.

Derek digs his fingers into Stiles's back, needing to make sure he's still in one piece even as their mouths meet and Stiles crushes his lips against Derek's in a needy kiss.

He makes a sound that's almost a protest, but relents, returning the kiss with a sort of nervous energy that catches him by surprise.

He lets the kiss go on for what feels like a much longer time than it probably is before drawing away a little to rest his forehead against Stiles's, trying to catch his breath.

"Don't scare me like that."

It's got to be the endorphins. It's got to be. Because Stiles lets out a slightly hysterical laugh against Derek's mouth at his words, pulling back to study his face.

"Scare you?" He shakes his head, and he's smiling. Stiles nearly died and he's smiling. Derek and the dreams have ruined him totally, because this is not normal.

"Okay, so...I had this whole...excuse planned in my head if you didn't kiss me back, about adrenaline and life-saving heroics," he murmurs.

"Save it for the next time I save your life, I guess."

Derek releases his death grip on Stiles, because he's probably leaving bruises against the poor kid's spine or something. Though he does pull him back onto the sidewalk, to avoid any other mishaps.

"You should go back to your house. But look both ways this time."

That's...not right.

Derek is no longer touching him, and he's no longer saying he's going to come inside.

Oh.

No.

"Wait, you're not...you're not leaving," Stiles asks, skeptically.

His hand slides up to grip the back of Stiles's neck and squeeze gently, his smile small but affectionate. Hoping to placate at least a little.

"I should stop being creepy for the night. But I'll keep checking in on you," he promises. Like that makes up for kissing Stiles and then running off to try and figure out stupid things like emotions.

Stiles' expression is suspicious, because even though Derek is making words that sound like he's not having a freakout and running away, Stiles is like, the master of that and cannot be placated.

"You are bolting," he accuses, but he's not even mad. Not really. "You are freaking out and you're bolting."

"A little, yeah. I just need to think about things." Because he's completely panicking inside and he needs to be away from Stiles and the way he smells and the way his body feels against him and everything else that's making it hard to think, much less form words.

"And so do you, probably."

Well. At least Derek was honest.

He wasn't sure if it was a werewolf thing, or if Derek just didn't see the point in lying.

As for Stiles, he's been doing nothing but thinking. The last thing he needs is to think more about it. And obsess over it. Every. Single. Moment.

"...right," he lies. "Thinking. Good...good plan." He takes a step into the street, putting more space between them. "Thanks for uh...stalking me. And then saving me from being road pancake. Which is not at all the delicious kind of pancake."

"I'm pretty sure not even the wolf part of me would find that appetizing."

He's rambling now, and he shoves his hands in his pockets before he does something stupid like reach for Stiles again. "I'll see you soon. Probably after the full moon." Derek doesn't trust his hormones and his usual restlessness around the full moon, combined with new and confusing feelings towards Stiles.

That's...more than a week, and Stiles can't even begin to contemplate the unfairness that is the fact that a week to see Derek feels like a punishment when he'd never met him a month ago, has only known him--in dreams and in real life--for maybe two months.

"Sure. Yeah. Great. Have a...have a good full moon." Was that something people said? He had no idea. "And uh...thanks. Again."
