Clary was lying on her back on Izzy’s bed reading through her newest acquisition from the Dreams. The Shadowhunter’s Codex was filled with interesting facts about demons and weapons, runes and history. As soon as she’d woken up and found it under her arm, she’d text everyone about it and headed over to talk about it with Izzy.
The other girl was currently going through her wardrobe sorting through clothes for them to go out that evening while Clary read various bits and pieces to her from the book until she came to a bit about parabatai where she stopped and sat up on the bed. “Hey Iz, what do you know about parabatai?”
Izzy found Clary’s company relaxing, more so than most others with the exception of her brothers. Sorting through her wardrobe while Clary read seemed like a perfect way to spend the day before she dragged Clary out for a night of fun. The two girls were good influences on each other and thankfully different enough from the dreams that they’d become much closer friends faster.
“Jace and Alec are parabatai” Izzy said, “It’s a pretty big deal in shadowhunter world. Someone to always be there, watch your back and know when you need them. Pretty awesome” her voice was somewhat wistful as she spoke a dress dangling from her fingers. Izzy hadn’t had many close friends in her dreams, she felt sorry for her dream self as here in the real world she enjoyed meeting people.
“Huh...sounds pretty intense…” Clary said wistfully, gazing at the pages of the Codex in front of her. “Have you uh...have you thought of doing it? With someone?” she asked, watching her friend eyeing up the dress she was holding up in front of her.
Izzy shook her head, “Not in the dreams. I don’t really have that many close friends apart from Alec, Jace and Max. It’s kind of just us. Girls don’t seem to like me and guys are mostly good for fun” she replied, “What’s got you thinking?”
Clary shrugged, readjusting her legs beneath her so they were crossed. “I don’t know really. I guess it just struck me as...I don’t know,” she looked off to the side, searching for the words. “Comforting, I guess? To know that there’s always going to be someone there for you who cares about you as much as, if not more than yourself, you know what I mean?” she looked to Izzy, to see if the girl understood what she meant.
“I definitely know what you mean” Izzy said, putting the dress back in the wardrobe before moving to sit next to Clary on the bed. “Even in the dreams I was kind of envious of Alec and Jace, I mean I know they love me too but that extra connection is just something special. Knowing that no matter what you’ll never truly be alone”
Clary paused to consider Izzy’s words for a minute, gazing into the distance as she thought about it. “Why don’t we do it?” she asked before she realised she’d done it.
“Me and you?” Izzy said looking over at Clary unsure whether to believe it or not, “You’d want me as your parabatai?”
“Of course I would,” Clary gave a little laugh. “We’d be an awesome team!” she grinned at her. “I think the question is...would you want me as your parabatai?” she asked, feeling a little unsure of herself. “I’m behind on my training and…” she shrugged. “Well...I’m me,” she held her hands upward in front of her..
Izzy smiled at Clary’s instant reply, she wasn’t used to such easy acceptance that her friend seemed happy to give her. “Clary, I’d be a fool not to want you as my parabatai. Like you say, we’d be an awesome team. Training can be worked on and as for being you. I rather like you just the way you are. Well maybe with a little more dress sense but that can be worked on”
Clary let out a hearty laugh at that. “Thanks Iz,” she grinned, bumping shoulders with her friend. “So what do you think? You’d be up for it?” she asked quietly. “What would Jace and Alec think about it?”
Izzy smiled back and bumped Clary’s shoulder too. “I’d be up for it” she confirmed before shrugging, “I have no idea. But it’s not them right?” she grinned.
“Right, why should they have all the fun,” Clary nodded, a smile on her face. “We’re probably going to need their help though, they should have memories of the ceremony, the Codex isn’t really that detailed,” she referred to the book laid open on the bedspread.
“From what I remember from the dreams there’s not an awful lot involved. You swear the vows and receive the rune in front of the council but there’s no council here” Izzy told her.
“Ok, we need the rings of fire to stand in and step into, so we’ll need a place to do the ceremony. Some place with some room that won’t mind us setting their floor on fire,” Clary said. “Do you guys have a garden or something that your parents wouldn’t mind us...torching? I’d offer my house but there’s nothing resembling greenery there except in my mom’s drawings,” she quipped.
“Well since we have our own place and our parents are in New York they don’t really have a say in this” she teased, “We have a garden though, there’s a patio kind of area too. I think Jace wants to try his hand at a BBQ at some point” Izzy added as an aside.
Clary laughed at the idea. “I don’t know why but I have a difficult time picturing Jace barbecuing,” she frowned with an amused smile. “Well, think we could use the patio then? Get some liquid paraffin for the circles of fire, do the ceremony, become Team Awesome...barbecue afterwards?” she replied, giving Izzy an amused sideways look.
“Oh I know right? I have a ‘Kiss the cook’ apron just in case he ever actually does it” Izzy laughed, “We could totally use the patio, I bet Magnus would help too if we needed him too. Post Parabatai barbeque? Sounds perfect. Oh and Team Awesome? Hell yes” Izzy grinned and held up her hand for Clary to high five her.
Clary high-fived her best friend back. “Great! Let’s do it!” she grinned. “Although you do realise I’m going to need something Shadowhunter-y to wear, right?”
“Oh Clary. You honestly think I don’t have something you could wear in there?” Izzy grinned gesturing to her closet. Little did Clary know that she had been collecting ‘Shadowhunter’ worthy gear since the dreams had begun.
