The castle was amazing. Zelda and crew arrived a couple of days early to set things up, get the rooms ready, prepare the hall and the kitchens. The catering crew arrived the night before the big day to set everything up, and the castle’s employees were a big help in making the preparations go quickly. Zelda was practically bouncing off the walls as she got things ready. It was thrilling. She was going to look like a princess. The dress was perfect. Her hair and make-up would be perfect.
Zelda and Link spend the night before the wedding apart. Actually, the first time they’d see each other was moments before the ceremony. She spent that day getting ready, and had her father on her arm as she showed up at the door to the grand hall where the ceremony would take place. Link was standing next to the officiant at the other end, and there were rows and rows of chairs set up on either side of the aisle.
The music played, and Zelda walked down the center aisle, grinning brightly under her veil. She was wearing a replica of her gown from the Dreams, with her hair and make-up done to compliment the look. It was as if she’d walked straight out of her Dreams to meet Link at the altar.
This was Link’s first time out of the country and it was a little surreal that so much of Scotland looked like Hyrule: the lush, rolling fields, the sudden cliffs. He was a little disappointed that there was no time to go exploring. For about five minutes. The moment that Zelda appeared at the end of the aisle was like a rush of water through his brain, clearing out everything that wasn’t centered on the moment.
From his perspective, it really was as if she had walked out of the Dream world, so much so that he felt weak after the shock, pleasant though it was. He wondered if her appearance was lost on everyone else, but he could not tear his eyes away to check their faces. It didn’t matter. This moment was for them alone.
And Navi, he reminded himself. Looking to her to exchange glances was all he could muster.
Navi grinned at Link, hoping that she’d be able to ground herself enough to not let her wings out. She was holding onto Zellie, who had a teeny version of Navi’s dress on, and was (rather predictably) sleeping through the whole thing.
By the time Zelda reached the front of the church with her father (with whom she’d reconciled… mostly…) her heartbeat had slowed once more. So far it was a dream--a beautiful dream--and she was walking through it with the world’s brightest smile on her face. She hadn’t taken her eyes off of Link the whole walk up between the rows of chairs and adoring fans snapping photos of her and her father. He moved her veil, kissed her cheeks, and took his seat. Then Zelda stepped up and forward and took hold of both of Link’s hands in her own.
There were times when Link thought about the distance between them in the dreams. She was a princess and he was only a wandering knight. Their relationship might have been a scandal. Maybe that was why she always seemed to keep him at an arm’s length in that world. But here, he could hold her hand and not worry about whether or not they were meant to be together. It was so obvious that they were. Forever.
Zelda laced her fingers through his as the ceremony began. She was only vaguely aware of the priest in front of them speaking, and the flashes that were coming from the crowd. Pictures. There would be hundreds of pictures to remember this beautiful day. But that was just a thought in the back of her mind. Zelda was still looking straight up into Link’s eyes. She felt her own welling with happy tears.
Navi had worn waterproof eye makeup for this very reason. She couldn’t help sniffling quietly through the whole thing.
