Leandra had decided to fly out a little early, and rent a motel room for a few nights while arranging things with Dani. She hadn't wanted her children to know anything just yet, either. This was to be a surprise, when she walked into Marian's comedy club. That would give her daughter no time to try to clean up either the bar or the acts. Just the way she wanted it.
Despite this, she found herself in a less than nice neighborhood, under the knife of a rather distressing young man. Voice calm, and only quavering in the slightest, she said, "I don't have anything. Do you really want to ruin your life over four dollars?"
What was it with Aveline's luck at stumbling upon people in need of rescue? It was almost like...a sixth sense. Or something. Good old fashioned foot patrol. Did wonders for cutting down on crime. Aveline set her jaw and pointed her gun at the young man as she advanced.
"Police! Drop your weapon and put your hands where I can see them!"
The punk turned, his knife dropping as he saw the gun leveled at him. He backed away, raising his hands in alarm.
Leandra breathed a sigh of relief, and kept out of the line of fire.
"Get on your knees on the ground and put your hands on your head," Aveline directed, one hand moving to her handcuffs.
The man did as he was told, and Leandra watched in curiosity. There was something odd about this woman. Familiar. She wondered where she had seen or met her before. Then she remembered.
She'd been in her dreams about Bethany dying. Leandra paled visibly.
Aveline cuffed the young man's hands behind his back and got him to his feet. She turned to the woman he'd attempted to mug. "Ma'am, the station's not far, if you like to come down while I book him."
"I'd like that, thank you. I'm Leandra Hawke. I'd offer my hand but I think you're busy." She gave her a soft smile and picked up her bag.
"Detective Aveline Vallen. I'm sorry we couldn't have met under better circumstances." Aveline quickly bagged the would-be mugger's knife with one hand, then began the walk to the precinct.
"I feel like we've met before." Leandra chuckled, and followed Aveline, "I'm new in town. A little lost, obviously. I was trying to surprise my brood."
"I see." Trying to surprise people was rather difficult if you didn't know your way around. "Any place in particular you wanted to find?"
"Well, my motel for starters. I'm meeting my new landlord in Lake Forest tomorrow or the day after. I wanted to come down early."
"I see. After we handle this, I can help you find your motel." It wouldn't do to let the poor woman continue to wander without direction.
"Thank you so much, Ms. Vallen." Leandra had the impression she'd like this woman. There was something reassuringly stable and down to earth about her. It was an almost motherly feeling. She wondered where it might have come from, "I am afraid to ask this, but I must. Have you ever arrested anyone with my last name?" Because they are her children. She knows her children.
"...Hawke? No..." She'd had strange dreams involving a Marian Hawke, but she wasn't going to mention that in front of someone she was arresting.
"Ah. Well I just figured." Leandra flashed a smile, "Knowing my children they would get into trouble on a regular basis. I could tell you stories about Marian and Garrett, especially."
Careful, she just might start!
Aveline chuckled as they arrived. "Maybe another time, ma'am. Let's get this process started."
"I'll buy you tea some time." Leandra followed her in. She gave her statement, and praised Aveline up down and sideways.
"I might take you up on that," Aveline said, smiling slightly. Then the processing went along and it went smoothly.
Leandra had warned the poor boy that he could be ruining his life. But maybe this would be a lesson for him. She hung around a bit, wanting to talk to Aveline before she took a cab to her motel.
Aveline came back to check on Leandra after finishing up. "Anything I can help you with?"
"I just wanted to thank you before my cab arrived." Leandra held out her hand, then changed her mind and hugged Aveline, "I'd have been even worse off." She had the impression Aveline tended to show up conveniently at times.
Aveline patted Leandra's back reassuringly. "I'm glad I was around." She pulled out one of her cards and held it out to Leandra. "If you need anything, feel free to give me a call."
She took the card, "Thank you. I'll call you for tea once I'm settled in." And with that, Leandra headed out to catch her cab!
