Roy and his parents had finally decided on what weekends Lian would spend with them, which meant that he was able to make plans for those weekends, which would more than likely consist of him spending time with Darcy or Dick, which Roy was excited about. He was even more excited because this particular Saturday night, Darcy and Dick were both coming over. It had been a long time since Roy had had a girlfriend that he’d actually introduced to any of his friends mostly because he hadn’t had a serious girlfriend since Jade, not wanting to have women coming in and out of Lian’s life and then one of the drawbacks of being a single father meant that Roy hadn’t really had a social life in awhile, so most of his old friends had moved on. So Roy was glad that he’d met Darcy and Dick and he was looking forward to spending the evening with the both of them.
When Roy had asked Darcy if she wanted to come over and meet his best friend, she had said yes though she was a little wary. Meeting people’s friends was only second to meeting their parents. You had to be impressive and act like you were a decent human being and make sure they liked you. Of course Roy had met Jane and that had gone off pretty damn well, so maybe this wouldn’t be so bad. Darcy had dressed as appropriately as she possibly could and then headed over. She wasn’t even sure what they were going to be doing, but this would at least be interesting. She knocked on the door.
Hearing the knock at the door, Roy headed towards it and smiled when he saw Darcy on the other side, “You look good.” Then again, he thought that Darcy always looked good. He moved aside to let his girlfriend in, still smiling, “And what’re you all dressed up for? Got a hot date tonight?” Roy enjoyed the fact that he and Darcy had similar personalities, which was one reason they worked so well together.
Darcy beamed at him and moved to kiss his cheek. “Thanks. So do you.” She went inside and then poked him in the stomach. “Hey you’re the one making me meet people. It’s a little nerve wracking to be on the other side of it. If he hates me, you might dump me.” Wasn’t that what happened? Bros before hoes or whatever.
Dick stood on the walk for a minute, just looking at Roy’s house. The last time he’d been here - the first time he’d been here, really - it had been under some fairly awful circumstances. The fear and worry and panic about his parents, that horrible call about the car crash… Those wounds still ached when he prodded at them, the events still too fresh not to. This house prodded at them.
He took a deep breath and sighed it back out, heading up to the door to hit the doorbell. Dick wasn’t about to let the bad in life stop him from experiencing the good of it. And being invited to meet his friend’s girlfriend was definitely good. Roy was great, so there was no way his girlfriend wouldn’t be, too.
Roy turned to wrap his arms around Darcy’s waist and shook his head, “No matter what he thinks, I’m not breaking up with you. You met my parents at Thanksgiving and they liked you, so I don’t see why Dick wouldn’t like you.” He smiled and leaned in to kiss Darcy just as the doorbell rang. Instead of pulling away to get it right away though, he continued to kiss her for another moment or two. Roy was never one to half ass anything and that included kissing. “Speak of the devil. That must be him.” He said when he finally did pull away. Smiling again, Roy moved to answer the door.
“Well that’s good to know.” She felt a bit better about the whole thing. Of course she still didn’t want Dick to hate her or whatever. “Guess you’ve got a point there.” She’d already done the hard thing with meeting his parents. This had to be easier. She smiled and kissed him back, leaning back up against him. Eventually she pulled back and shook her head. “Answer the door before he thinks we’ve forgotten him.” Or worse, were too busy making out. She stood behind, just waiting.
Dick grinned at Roy as the door opened, the expression genuine even if it didn’t quite meet his eyes yet. He just needed a little more time. A little more distraction. If he was lucky, no one would ever know the difference. For all that he generally wore his heart on his sleeve, he was actually pretty good at hiding things like this.
“Hey! Hi,” he greeted cheerfully. “Is it just me, or did your hair get redder?”
Roy laughed as he moved aside to let Dick inside then ran a hand through said hair, “No, it’s still the same lovely ginger color it’s always been.” Some redheads didn’t like the color of their hair, but Roy had always liked it, because there weren’t as many redheads as there were blonds and brunettes. “So, before we do anything else…” Roy shut the door then turned towards Darcy, “Dick, this is my girlfriend Darcy. Darcy, this is Dick, my best friend from my dreams turned almost real life best friend.” They may not have known each other as well in real life as in the dreams, but Roy liked to think that they were on the way to being real life best friends.
Waiting for introductions, Darcy put out her hand and smiled. “It’s really nice to meet you, Dick. Roy has told me a lot about you. Well at least you from the dreams.” And some things that were from real life too. It was hard not to talk about dreams though. She shook his hand firmly. “I think his hair does get redder when he’s blushing though. Or maybe it’s just because the whole of him goes all red.” It was kind of amusing.
“We’ll have to make him blush tonight so we can decide which it is,” Dick replied, smiling warmly. “Between the two of us we should be able to figure it out. It’s great to meet you, too, Darcy.”
He gave Roy a friendly pat on the back as he released Darcy’s hand, a less impersonal version of a handshake. “It’s good to see you again, too.”
“Excuse me. I’m standing right here.” Roy quirked a brow and crossed his arms over his chest, “I’m starting to think it was a bad idea to get the two of you together.” He teased, smirking. It was nice to see Darcy and Dick already getting along even if that meant they were making fun of him.
“Very good idea. I’m all for embarrassing him.” She looked over at Roy and patted his cheek. “Hey you were the one who decided this was a good thing. You have no one to blame but yourself. Technically. It’s not our fault.” She wouldn’t make too much fun of him though. That wouldn’t be fair.
“You are the architect of your own misery,” Dick intoned solemnly. Sort of. He could already tell that he wasn’t doing a very good job at not smiling, and the rest of his amusement was probably just as poorly hidden. He gave his messenger back a little pat. “On the bright side, I stopped at the bakery for cookies on my way here.”
Roy chuckled and grabbed for Darcy’s wrist as she patted his cheek and kissed the back of her hand, “I’m obviously a glutton for punishment.” At the mention of cookies, Roy glanced over at Dick, “Ah, cookies. You already know the way to my heart.” He grinned then gestured for them both to follow him into the kitchen, “Either of you want something to drink? Beer. Wine. Something else?”
“It’s all right. I mean it’s only fair. You and Jane were laughing it up pretty well at my expense a couple of months ago, don’t forget.” She smirked and shook her head. Turnabout was fair play, as far as she was concerned. “I immediately adore anyone who brings me cookies, so you’re good. I’ll have a glass of wine, if we’re drinking.” Why not? Time to party.
“I can do wine,” Dick agreed, pulling out the box of cookies and setting his bag by the door before following the couple to the kitchen. He wasn’t a big drinker, but a glass or two every so often didn’t hurt. “Red or white?”
An expression of faux shock came over Roy’s features at Darcy’s words, “I would never laugh at you. Well, except that one time when Jane told that one story. Or the other time.” His lips turned up into a smirk and he kissed her cheek before moving over to the fridge to retrieve the bottle of wine, “It’s red.” He put the bottle on the counter then got out three wine glasses and began to search for a corkscrew, “Alright, where did I put that corkscrew?”
She stuck her tongue out at Roy as they headed back to get a drink. She wasn’t really a drinker either, but she could do a glass of wine with dinner. “I guess we’re even…. For now. Oh and you can just put those on the counter or.. wherever. I’ll try not to eat any cookies before dinner.” No promises though. A moment later she held out the corkscrew to Roy. “Here. It’s in the same place it always is.”
Dick set the box of cookies on an out of the way bit of counter as ordered, then wandered over to lean back against the cabinets on Roy’s other side, tucking his hands lazily into his jeans pockets and grinning at the pair. They were a cute a couple.
“Gettin’ a little screwy in your old age, Speedy?” he cracked.
“Oh, haha. Everyone make fun of Roy.” He took the corkscrew from Darcy and proceeded to open the bottle of wine then filled three glasses, “I shouldn’t even be sharing my wine with people who make fun of me.” He was smirking as he spoke, never really able to be serious except when it came to Lian or his job, “You’re one to talk, short pants.” Ever since he’d first dreamt about meeting and becoming friends with Dick, he’d been waiting for Dick to, not only show up, but for him to start dreaming about being Robin simply so that he could use the nickname he’d coined in the dreams. “Anyway, I ordered chinese. It should be here in a little while.” He picked up two of the glasses as he spoke and handed them off to Darcy and Dick.
Darcy couldn’t help but laugh a little. “Sorry, I’ll stop teasing you. Now give me wine.” She crossed her fingers and held up some fingers. “Scout’s honor.” She tried to look as innocent as possible as she took the wine glass from Roy. “Ooh snap, he called you short. Are you going to take that?” Maybe she was a bit of an instigator. “Chinese sounds good.”
"Short-pants," Dick explained, amused, accepting his own glass. "Dream-me wears 'em, and Yankee-Doodle over here is just jealous he doesn't have the legs to pull them off, too. The Robin costume has got some serious style. Speedy's... Not so much."
He grinned over at Roy, saluting the redhead a little with his glass.
"And we wouldn't tease you so much if we didn't love you. And if you didn't make it so easy."
“As if you’ve ever been a scout.” Roy quirked a brow at Darcy as she took her glass then he took his own and gestured for them to follow him into the living room where there was a couch, an armchair and coffee table. Just enough room for them to eat once the food arrived unless either of them had any objections in which case, they could move back to the kitchen, “They were not just short pants. They were like underwear. Without tights.” Roy took a sip of his wine just before his blue eyes lit up, “Wait! I have that picture. You two stay here.” Setting down his wine glass, he ran up the stairs to his bedroom.
“Hey! I could have been a scout. You have no idea!” Hmph. Okay so maybe she had never been a scout, but just because you’d never been a scout didn’t mean she couldn’t promise something on scout’s honor. She eyed the two of them and then tried to imagine them in some spandex get up. “Oh dang. Like speedos but without the tights on the inside and the underwear on the outside? That’s… some kind of picture.”
Her eyebrow raised, since she’d never seen the picture yet and waited. “I have dreams about superheroes, but he doesn’t really wear tights. More like .. armor. And he’s a Norse god.”
“Seriously, I look cool,” Dick promised. “So does Roy, but don’t tell him I said that. I’d prefer to save that kind of thing for a mushy moment so I can possibly wheedle more hugs out of him. Like, proper hugs, not one of those halfsies ones.”
Halfsie hugs were good enough most of the time, since most guys preferred to pretend they were too cool for the real thing, but - man, Dick loved hugs. Actually, though, if Darcy was dreaming about superheroes, too, that brought up a good question:
“So, is dream-you a superhero, too?”
Roy located the picture in his bedside table then headed back downstairs, “Okay, tell me that those aren’t basically scaly panties.” Reaching the bottom of the stairs, he rejoined Darcy and Dick then held the picture out for Darcy, “I at least have pants. Case in point, Speedy is better than Robin.” He smirked at Dick.
For some reason Darcy found that kind of hilarious. “I’ll remember that you’re a hugger then. Don’t worry, your secret is safe with me.” She wasn’t about to out him so that he wouldn’t get more hugs. What kind of girlfriend would she be if she did that?
“Nah. I’m the love interest’s side kick and comic relief. I get all the good lines,” she told Dick as Roy came back down with the picture. She eyed the picture, taking it all in. “Good grief. Well you do both have nice legs.”
“You have to say that, Roy’s your boyfriend,” Dick teased gently, not looking away from the photograph. He looked older in it than he was in his dreams, and some of the other teenagers didn’t look familiar to him, but they all looked so happy. Close. He really, really liked that. “Way to be diplomatic, Darcy. But see? I was right about looking cool, wasn’t I?”
“Whoever told you that you looked cool was lying. You’re wearing less than the girls.” Roy quirked a brow, smirking. “And look at those shoes. Who designed your costume anyway?” The teasing was all in good fun, considering the fact that almost none of them really had cool looking costumes.
“I’m totally not just saying that. Honest. About either one. And from now on, I am totally neutral. Like Switzerland.” She raised up her hands and shook her head. “I’m totally diplomatic, man. I work for Tony Stark. You kind of have to be. But I think you both look cool. I’m not getting on anyone’s bad side. Hell no.”
“I designed my costume,” Dick retorted good-naturedly, more than a little tempted to stick his tongue out at Roy. He was tempted, but he didn’t. See? Totally a grown-up. “And I still think you’re just jealous you couldn’t have pulled it off half so well. So, how long have you guys been dating?”
“Fine, Switzerland. Don’t get involved.” Roy smirked and set the picture aside so that it wouldn’t get ruined or anything before he had a chance to bring it back up to his room. Leaning back on the couch, Roy wrapped an arm around Darcy’s shoulders and glanced at her, “We met sometime last year then went on a few dates starting in October, but I think we were officially dating around January or so. Is that about right?” He asked, confirming with Darcy.
“If I had a costume, I would totally make mine awesome and sexy and it would say ‘fuck you’ across the chest, I think..” It sounded nice anyway. They were all so grown up. “Hmm.. you mean that it took three months for us to go steady? If you say so.” She shrugged a little. “Clearly it’s been a long couple of months.”
“I’d have definitely guessed longer than that if you’d asked me to,” Dick agreed. “You guys don’t seem like a couple that’s that new. On the bright side - all the embarrassing stories are probably still all very fresh in Darcy’s mind.”
The acrobat shot a grin at Roy, good-natured and teasing, then looked back at Darcy. “How much of an idiot did he act like when he was trying to woo you?”
“Hey! I was not an idiot.” Roy could definitely act like an idiot sometimes, but he liked to think that he’d been pretty smooth where Darcy was concerned when he’d taken her out on their first couple of dates, but he was curious as to how Darcy was going to respond and whether she’d tease him or be serious, “Was I an idiot?”
Darcy laughed, “Yeah. They are pretty fresh in my mind. Though to be honest, my friend told him a lot of embarrassing stories about me too, so it goes both ways.” Though she didn’t mind embarrassing stories about herself, for the most part. They weren’t that bad.
“Oh no, he wasn’t an idiot. Actually I was the idiot. But I’m kind of grumpy. And I was really in a ‘oh god no one will ever love me’ kind of mood when we first met. I’m much better now.” She was being quite serious. “Can we eat now? My stomach just made an insanely loud noise.”
“Your girlfriend is far too kind to you,” Dick informed Roy solemnly, but his eyes were dancing. He took a sip of his wine, humming a little in absent approval. “Though that might change if you don’t feed her. You said the chinese should be arriving soon, right?”
“I assured her that she’d find someone and lo and behold, she did,” Roy grinned, looking just a little smug then laughed at her question then nodded in response to Dick’s, “Yeah, it should be here soon.” Just as he leaned over to press a kiss to Darcy’s head the doorbell rang, “Speak of the devil.”
Getting to his feet, he glanced down at his girlfriend, “Darce, you wanna get the plates and show Dick where to get the utensils and other stuff while I get the food?” He was looking forward to the rest of the evening and was glad that so far everything seemed to be going smoothly.
