Zelda didn’t like that she hadn’t heard from Kol in a little while. And while she could have texted him, she felt it was better to simply show up at his place with kitten treats, cupcakes, and an apologetic smile. This surely said I’m sorry I’ve been such a neglectful friend, please let me in.
Also, she didn’t like the idea of telling Kol via IM or Text that she was now engaged. He’d likely see the ring on her finger before she had a chance to tell him, but… anyway, she knocked hard on the door, then held the cupcake box up high and put on a pout.
Kol had been embarrassed that Zelda had to come to his rescue when he was extremely drunk and depressed over the things his father had said to him. He didn’t want his friend to think he was an incapable idiot, a drunkard and a loser. Zelda was an opinion he deeply cared about. He hadn’t had time to thank her personally for coming over and taking care of her. She was a good friend.
Opening the door he smiled at her and scooped her up in a hug, picking her up off the ground, “how you doing, sweetheart?” He asked in his British drawl as he gave her a loud kiss on the cheek. “HADES! Your girlfriend is here!”
When he picked her up and spun her around, Zelda had to move the cupcake box out of the way. She laughed as he kissed her cheek, and nearly lost the box of frosted confectionaries. “I’m good! It’s good to see you so chipper,” she said, putting on the world’s most ridiculous accent--cockney, maybe?-- and returning his tight squeeze. “Where’s my feline boyfriend!?” she added, pulling away from Kol to dip into his place and start hunting for the cat.
The growing kitten poked his head out from under the couch and let out a tiny meow, flopping his paw towards her cutely, obviously too lazy to get up and do much of anything else. Silly feline.
“Did you bring me treats, Zelie?” Kol asked coming up behind his friend and making grabby hands towards the box. “I’ve come to accept the fact that you’ll never actually BAKE for me and that everything will be store bought, so hand over the deliciousness and nobody gets hurt.”
“Hey, I’ll never BAKE for anyone,” Zelda said, handing the box over to her friend with a grin. “Unless you really want food poisoning. Then I’ll cook for you, Sugar.” She turned her attention from Kol to the kitten on the floor and flopped down so she could start feeding him treats. “And who’s my favorite ball of fluff? You are! That’s right, you are!”
“You need to learn to cook, trust fund baby,” Kol said with a mocking smile as he placed the baked goods on the kitchen table before turning his attention to see Hades fully come out from under the couch and start to nuzzle Zelda fully, purring like a little motorboat, pawing at her chest and mainly her cleavage with his paw. “He loves you, you know,” Kol said with a smirk. “Why do I have the feeling that you’d steal him from me if you could? Such a little sneak.”
“Why cook when I have an amazing boyfriend,” note that she didn’t say ‘fiance.’ It was hard enough trying to wrap her own mind around it in her head, saying it out loud was even more confusing. “To do it for me.” She said, and gave Kol a bright grin. “I wouldn’t steal him on purpose,” she added, playfully, “but you can’t blame me if he tries to hide away in my purse.” She got out another cat treat and offered it to the purring guy.
“Get your own kitten, hussy!” Kol teased as he watched his best friend roll around with his kitten as if the clothes she was wearing didn’t cost a fortune. Zels was cute like that. He had a good friend in her. A very good friend. “Girl, puh-leeze. You haven’t had good cooking because you haven’t had my cooking. It’s cute that you think Link is talented like that though,” he patted her head and lounged on his couch, watching them play before suddenly sitting forward and pointing to her hand. “What the hell is THAT?!”
Zelda jumped when he suddenly sat forward and raised his voice. Her heart was thumping a little harder than usual in her chest, and then she broke into a grin. “What, this?” She asked, holding up her hand so he could see. “...GUESS WHAT HAPPENED?”
Kol looked at the ring. A million thoughts raced through his head. How he didn’t think anyone was good enough for her, especially Link. What if this fucker was after her for her money? But still...Zelda was a smart girl, and from what he had seen of Link, the man made her happy. So, as her friend, it was his job to be happy for her.
“Hey Zels, that’s great!” He leaned forward and kissed her forehead. “I’m really happy for you. But if he hurts you, I’ll bury him at sea. I hope he’s signing one hell of a prenup.”
Zelda was beaming. She shrugged her shoulders. “I figure my father will take care of all of that stuff while I plan the wedding.” She said. She’d already pumped quite a bit of money into Link’s farm without having any documents signed. That was the kind of girl she was--generous and giving. Of course, there was plenty to give. Though, she did have a bit of a head for business, believe it or not. She had her own investments cooking. Things that she needed Billy’s help keeping track of.
“I’ve got to find bridesmaids. And an officiant. I think we’ll probably do something somewhere exotic. Or at least… far away from here. Maybe Scotland?”
“Scotland? Well that will be fun. I better be invited, or I am going to be totally and completely butthurt,” he said as he scooped up Hades in his arms and rubbed the kitten behind the ears. “Did you hear that Hades? Zels has replaced you with a man,” he laughed as the kitten’s ears leaned back and an ugly little growl erupted from his mouth as he looked at Zelda as if she had betrayed him.
“So, how did it happen? Who proposed to who? What does daddy dearest think?”
Zelda blinked at the cat. “I didn’t replace--” she said, then realized that she was talking to a cat. A cat.
She sighed, giving a little laugh, and leaned back in her chair. “He asked me. On Valentine’s Day. We were out to dinner, it was very romantic.” She said, breaking into a smile. “And Daddy… well, he’s going to have a talk with Link, I’m sure. When he finds out.”
