Lucy had finished her A-levels last June and decided to take a year out in order to travel. She’d met a lot of people while she’d been backpacking around and really enjoyed herself but she knew where she wanted to end up so she had booked a flight to California after arriving in Canada and was now standing outside the address she had for her brother Peter and his boyfriend Caspian. She hadn’t told them she was coming, she was hoping to stay with them while she decided what she was going to do next.

Hoisting her backpack up she raised her hand and pressed the bell waiting for Peter or Caspian to answer.

Peter had worked at the clinic that morning and upon getting home had taken a shower then got started on any chores that needed to be done. Peter was enjoying working at the animal clinic and the shelter, but that left little time to do anything else when he was home aside from spend time with Caspian. He knew that eventually he’d fall into a better routine, but for the moment he was still getting used to his schedule. Today, Caspian was out, he wasn’t exactly sure where, but he knew he’d be back eventually and probably with some crazy story as usual so Peter had decided to start on dinner while he waited for his boyfriend to come home.

He’d just taken out some frozen chicken when he heard the doorbell and couldn’t help but frown slightly. He wasn’t expecting anyone and if Caspian had forgotten his keys, he would have called or texted along with the doorbell and Peter’s phone was silent. Heading towards the door, Peter took a look through the peephole, eyes widening when he saw who was on the other side. “Lucy?!” He exclaimed as he opened the door, “What’re you doing here?” His sister was one of the last people he’d expected to see.

“Surprise!” Lucy said grinning as her brother opened the door and she moved forward to hug him, slightly awkwardly because of her bag but full of feeling anyway. “Well I was travelling around, as you know, and decided I really should start thinking about what I’m going to do with the rest of my life and all that when I thought what better place to do that than here with you and Caspian. If it’s okay for me to stay” she added.

Peter may have been shocked to see his little sister, but when she hugged him, his arms came up to wrap around her in return. It had been months since he’d seen Lucy, considering she’d gone off to travel before he and Caspian had made the move to California. Of course they’d talked since, but talking to Lucy over the phone and actually seeing here were two completely different things.

After a moment or two, Peter released his sister and gestured for her to come in, closing the door behind them, “You should have told me you were coming. If I hadn’t been home you would have had to sit out there until we got back. Caspian is out and I only just got home from work an hour or so ago.” He would have to text Caspian and tell him Lucy was there, but that could wait a few minutes, “When did you get in? Do mum and dad know you’re out here?” There were so many questions.

It was definitely better seeing him in person than quick phone conversations which consisted mostly of pleasantries and updates on where she was and what they were all doing. She hadn’t realised quite how much she’d missed her oldest brother until he was stood in front of her.

Entering the house she grinned, “If I’d have told you it wouldn’t have been much of a surprise would it?” she teased, “Besides I wouldn’t have minded waiting” she shrugged easily. “I only got in a few hours ago, came straight from the airport. Mum and dad knew the USA was part of my plans but they don’t know I’m here”

“That’s very true.” Peter smiled as he led Lucy into the living room, “Do you want anything? I can put on some tea.” He was so happy to see his sister that he couldn’t have even hid it if he tried. “You’ll have to let them know that you’re here later. Tomorrow maybe, It’s likely too late today.” The time differences had taken Peter some time to get used to, but he was better at it now.

“Tea would be great” she smiled at him nodding, she hadn’t really had much on the plane it all tasted so plastic and the tea was always rubbish. “Oh I will, it’s okay they aren’t too worried if they don’t hear from me for a while” they’d gotten used to it when she’d started travelling. “So, how are you getting on out here? Tell me everything” she asked eagerly.

Peter went into the kitchen to put on a kettle, listening to Lucy as she spoke then returned to the living room, “I know, but I’m sure they’ll want to know where you are.” Peter had always been protective of his younger siblings and that didn’t change now just because they were all older. “We’ve been fitting in well here, I think. The move went well and Aslan has settled in well,” As if on cue, the large orange Maine Coon came walking out of Peter and Caspian’s bedroom.

Lucy chuckled, “I’ll tell them big brother don’t worry” she grinned at him. He was one of the best older brothers anybody could hope for and most of the time she didn’t mind his protectiveness really. “Your place looks great” she said looking around before slipping onto the floor as Aslan wandered out, opening her arms the cat made it’s way onto her lap for attention which Lucy gave happily, “Hey Aslan, aren’t you looking wonderful” to which the cat responded with a loud purr.

Peter smiled as he watched Lucy and Aslan, “As you’ll recall, that cat is quite the attention whore.” Peter and Caspian tried to give Aslan as much attention as was possible while still having time to give each other attention and usually they did a fairly good job of it, but with Lucy around for a little while, the cat was sure to have all the attention he could want.

Lucy mock gasped and rubbed Aslan behind his ears, “Don’t listen Aslan, he doesn’t mean it” she grinned. Lucy would completely spoil the cat, she adored him and it was obvious. “How’s the vet study going?”

Peter laughed as he watched his sister with Aslan, “Oh he knows it’s true. He still jumps down on us from the dresser to wake us up in the morning to feed him.” He was about to respond to her question when the whistle on the kettle went off and he excused himself to go make their tea. Having grown up with Lucy, he knew how she took her tea and after making both cups, he returned, setting her’s on the coffee table near where she was sitting on the floor then took a seat on the couch, himself, “It’s going well.” He said, now answering her earlier question, “I’ve actually got a job as a tech at a local clinic. I’m also volunteering at the local SPCA.” All in all, Peter thought that things were going well for them.

Lucy laughed, well how else would he let them know he needed feeding she continued stroking him absently, knowing her legs would be asleep by the time the cat moved. Not that she minded. “That’s great Peter” she grinned, leaning over to pick up her tea, “I wish I knew what I wanted to do as much as you” she said ruefully. She’d completed her a-levels in English literature, History and sport science but had no idea what she really wanted to do.

“I’m sure you’ll figure it out. If you need any help figuring it out, there’s a message board type network for people who reside in Orange County and everyone there is extremely friendly and helpful. Someone may be able to help you,” Having not had any dreams himself yet, Peter didn’t think anything of telling Lucy about Valarnet. It only seemed logical that he wanted to help his sister and thought Valarnet might be a good jumping off point.

“I hope so. Don’t think it’d go down too well if I just bum around for years” she joked, “Oh yeah? I’ll check it out” She had her ipad with her which was how she’d been keeping in touch with everybody. “I was thinking I might look for a little part time job while I stay here and work out what to do” she added, to see what her brother thought.

“That’s always a good idea. I’m sure there are plenty of places around that are hiring.” Peter would encourage Lucy in whatever she wanted to do; to an extent of course. There were certain things he wouldn’t be able to encourage and knew his parents would be horrified if he did. “Valarnet is a good place to find out if anyone is hiring as well.”

Lucy nodded, “I thought so too. Looks like I’ve got a few things to mention on there then” she smiled, grateful for the reassurance from her brother. She needed to do something otherwise she’d get bored and of course, staying here she wanted to contribute too.

“So, tell me about your travels. What was your favorite place to visit so far?” Lucy had told him a little about her travels when they’d talked on the phone, but the conversations had always been short, mostly to check in so he wouldn’t worry too much about her. There had never been any real details. Now, however, they had all the time in the world.

“Oh wow, how can I chose just one place?” she said, thinking before she suddenly remembered, “I can show you my photos, don’t worry I’ve been sorting them out as I go so there aren’t like a million blurry shots to go through” she told him with a grin. She moved Aslan from her lap with a kiss to the top of his head and an apology, before moving to retrieve her ipad. Coming back she settled on the couch next to him, “Okay, so starting at Heathrow Airport...”
