Elsa tugged off her glove and placed her hand against the plastic cup, it went cold almost instantly and she quickly released it and put her glove back on before it froze completely. Well at least there was an upside, she didn’t have to worry about her iced mocha’s warming up too much before she finished them.
Sighing she twirled the straw with her fingers, she’d had to start wearing the gloves most of the time and she knew it was only a matter of time before people started to notice when she did the forecasts. Maybe it was time to leave. Go somewhere remote and study the weather as she had planned, but then she’d have to leave Kate and Anna - a prospect which broke her heart.
Elphaba swept into the cafe and ordered her drink. She was agitated, had somehow managed to turn a pair of shoes in her closet a different colour and had no idea how she’d done it. She’d thought she was getting better at controlling it, but then she had been worried about this audition she had gone for an whether, if she was picked, she could actually perform on stage in front of an auditorium filled with people. She had reached for the shoes and zapped them it seemed. She paid for her drink and picked it up, turning to find a place to sit when something caught her eye.
She saw a woman she recognised from the tv sat near the window, but that wasn’t what caught her eye. What made her stop and look was the sight of her gloveless hand around a plastic cup and…something drew her to the woman. She was made even more curious when the woman rushed to put her glove back on, but Elphaba’s curiosity was piqued and she made her way over. “What happened?” she asked, standing opposite the woman, holding her cup of hot chocolate, eyes moving the woman’s face and her cup.
Elsa looked up from her thoughts and frowned briefly before smiling with a touch of confusion at the woman, “I’m sorry? What do you mean?” she asked.
“I know that look,” Elphaba said, sliding into the seat opposite her. “And I know that reaction,” she pointed to the cup with a finger. “You made something happen that freaked you out, didn’t you. So what happened?” she said calmly.
She couldn’t help but laugh softly, though not unkindly. “Oh I know what happened. It shouldn’t have done, I shouldn’t be able to do it, I don’t want to but it looks like we don’t get a choice. So what do you do that freaks you out?” she asked.
"Depends on the day," Elphaba grinned. "One day I'm stirring pots without my hands, the next I'm setting trees on fire or changing the colour of a pair of shoes like this morning," she admitted in a low voice with furtive look around at the other patrons. "You?"
"I freeze things. Turn them to ice and make it snow when I lose control of my emotions. I can't control it. I'm scared I'm going to hurt someone" she admitted quietly
"I know that feeling," Elphaba replied quietly. "That's how I set my fianceé's tree on fire. I was hoping that the more I dreamed, the more I'd control these...powers," she shrugged. "It's hard isn't it," she looked down at her drink.
Elsa nodded, "I hoped the same but my dreams...the only safe thing is to take myself off alone. I don't want to leave the ones I love but if I stay I could hurt them and I'd never be able to forgive myself"
"Alone?" Elphaba considered it. "I have to admit, I draw a lot of strength from my fianceé. She's my rock and without her and my best friend...I think the...powers would control me so much more," she told the other woman gently. "Although I dreamed I ran away from it all too, took myself off to a hilltop castle and shut myself off because people were afraid of me, it wasn't a nice feeling," she admitted sadly.
“Mine already control me, without my gloves anything I touch freezes and I can’t stop it” Elsa said quietly, “In my dreams I created an ice castle and things were fine. I didn’t have to worry about hiding my power, I couldn’t hurt anybody and they could just get on with their lives”
"You're afraid of it," Elphaba said, watching her carefully. "I understand that, there's times when I don't know what's happening to me and I...I just want it to go away and be normal," she closed her eyes and breathed a heavy sigh.
"Of course I am" Elsa replied, "I'd be a fool not to be. I've already hurt my sister in the dreams, I don't want to risk hurting her or anybody else. And I can't control this" she gestured with her gloved hands.
Elphaba nodded slowly then took a sip of her drink. "I'm Elphaba by the way," she introduced.
"Elsa" she replied, "I'm sorry you didn't catch me at a time when I would be better company"
"Hey," Elphaba shrugged. "We all have our bad days. Need someone to talk to. Some might even say we were supposed to meet today. A day when both of our powers are acting up," she quirked a hint of a smile.
Even Elsa smiled at that, "Maybe so. I was about to give up after all, runaway and hide from everyone"
“Well let’s face it, how many other people seem to be going through what we’re going through?” Elphaba asked. “Maybe if we stick together, we can learn how to control them together?” she suggested.
"I guess it is rather similar, maybe there's an invisible connection pulling us together" she smiled, "I kind of like that idea actually, it would be nice to have a friend to help and be helped by”
“Agreed,” Elphaba smiled across the table at her. “Want to try shaking on it?” she offered, holding her hand out.
Elsa hesitated slightly but slowly held her gloved hand out, “Okay, it’s a deal. Magical friends” she smiled a little.
“Magical friends,” Elphaba nodded, shaking hands with Elsa confidently.
