Who: Sherlock Holmes and Eli.

Since it was dark, she could move freely. Eli sprinted from her home with Logan and Velma to the campus where Mr. Holmes said he worked. She got someone to let her in the front door, so she could move freely around the halls, but when she came to his lap, she simply knocked.

"Mr. Holmes? It is Eli, from the internet? May I come in?"

	Eli from the internet. Sherlock had done a little research on the Network since they'd "chatted", laying the groundwork for whatever would be crystallized when their eyes finally met. She was glad he hadn't questioned when she'd asked if she could come in. If he'd ignored her, she'd have stayed in the hall, but with his permission she'd be safe from harm.

"Thank you," she smiled, moving to sit down by him on a stool. She looked her age of seventeen, but somehow far older and younger at the same time. Her manner betrayed her as older, but sometimes she seemed younger because of a certain loneliness.

"What are you working on?"

It was a loneliness Sherlock noted for two reasons. One, it was perfectly reasonable for a lonely teenager to live in a fantasy world of vampires, given the popularity of Twilight and all of the Twilight copycat television programs and films. The second reason was more personal.

"Urine," he replied, dropping a few milliliters of a clear solution into one of the tubes. He gave it a swirl and nearly smiled. "Post-mortem toxicology. And this gentleman's wife is going to be very relieved to know she has a case against a certain drug company."

"Good," Eli murmured. "Callous disregard and mistakes should not leave a laboratory setting. That is what experiments are for." She squinted, sniffing the air. "Ammonia?" Her sense of smell was keen as a vampire, keen enough where she could smell how the man took his tea. But she didn't want to go into all of that.

Her own accent was a muddling of English, Swedish, and German, and she was careful not to touch his instruments. Eli was nothing if not polite.

Sherlock lifted an eyebrow, observing in silence as she sniffed the air. It was animal-like. Without answering her question, he pushed his test tubes off to the side and started to pull the gloves from his hands. He'd replace them before he examined her teeth, and wash up in between. At home, he was slovenly, but in the lab he was fastidious.

He walked over to the sink. "So... tell me about your dreams." To say Sherlock was not one to waste time was an understatement. Besides, he's already deduced more about her home life and childhood than he was comfortable knowing.

She watched him, smiling a little to herself. She liked him already, if only because he seemed a little like her: unwilling to beat around the bush, and stubborn.

"In my dreams, I am a little boy named Elias, living near what would become Stockholm around the turn of the thirteenth century. I was given to a lord in exchange for coin as I was the youngest and sickliest of my family. Said lord emasculated me, dressed me as a girl, and turned me into a vampire. I escaped him when there was a seige upon the castle, and then I slept for many years. I dream of the passing of time and eventually about falling in love with a teenage boy named Oskar in the early ninteen-eighties."

"How did he turn you into a vampire?" asked Sherlock, a little stunned that those words were coming out of his mouth in that order. Still, it seemed a more productive question than how did he emasculate you. He swallowed, as if to clear a sour taste from his mouth.

What he did not feel, however, was any sense of fear in the presence of someone with the potential to violently steal his soul. Fear wasn't a familiar emotion to Sherlock. Besides, he trusted his instincts that the girl was uninterested in harming him.

"He fed from me. I am less like romantic vampires in that feeding is messy. I tear out throats. And anything I feed from will turn unless I kill it entirely. I usually snap their necks. I am fortunate to feed here from someone who is immune to turning, so I do not have to do that. But in the dreams, I usually employed a human who would kill for me. Distasteful, but better than the alternative."

Eli smiled a little sadly, knowing that her story wasn't all that sympathetic.

Sherlock had examined so many dead bodies and documented so many violent deaths that hearing Eli's description didn't turn his stomach. But it nearly did. His mask-like face only registered the slightest discomfort as he drew his eyebrows together. "And here...I assume you merely woke up as a vampire, rather than take the long way round. That's what most people claim on the message board, that they woke up with powers, following dreams."

"It took a while. Slowly I became very sensitive to the light, then I slowly became unable to digest food. I lasted for a week without eating until I felt myself almost starving."

Sighing, she allowed herself to let her fangs descend. Most of the vampires she'd met from the Valarnet boards had lovely fangs; their incisors were long, curved, and sleek. Eli envied them.

She looked like the predator she was. All of her teeth were sharp and serrated, almost like a shark's, and her blue eyes looked sadder than ever. "Be careful when you examine them," she murmured. "Do not prick your fingers. Use tools."

Talk was cheap. Even highly fascinating talk about the theoretical possibility of the undead. The theoretical was useless unless to led to the concrete. So, Sherlock reached for a new pair of gloves and prepared to examine his first piece of concrete evidence concerning this dream business.

Because it was a lab where autopsies were routinely conducted, there did happen to be dental equipment on hand. Sherlock opened a drawer and pulled out a small mirror and pick.

	Eli was patient, quiet and unmoving as he moved toward her. She sat with her hands in her lap, eyes closed, letting him do whatever he wished. As long as it was with an instrument and not his hands, she was fine. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Sherlock's touch was delicate for a man who decidedly wasn't. He had become an expert at manipulating flesh and bone. He was calm and quiet as he examined her, avoiding her sad eyes. Vampire or not, Eli's teeth had altered their shape at will, even if they weren't the typical, pop-culture vampire fangs he'd expected, which was telling. It was a point in the dream world's favor.

"And you have a friend you feed on?" he asked. "I assume that if I tested my instruments, it would match their blood? Why don't you want to feed on me?" He usual quick fire questioning returned.

	She waited until his fingers were far away from her mouth to answer. "My papa, yes. It may, right after he lets me feed upon him. He is immune to most illnesses, he fights them off quickly. 	Sherlock scowled. "Your papa... is this the same man as in your dreams? The one who turned you." He pulled the rubber gloves from his hands one finger at a time. "Are you familiar with the play Hamlet? Shakespeare?" Although his tone had the cadence of a question, Sherlock continued without giving Eli a chance to answer. Whether or not she knew the play wasn't important. "I performed it once, Titular role. There is a line, 'There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy." Act one, scene four--no, five."

He took the briefest of pauses, looking squarely at Eli. He felt there wasn't much, if any need to explain the quotation. "I wish I could perform the play over again. I could bring so much more to it now..."

	Sherlock's eyes were elsewhere. What he was thinking was anyone's guess--occasionally, it was even his. He wasn't ignoring Eli's questions intentionally when he came back to life and posed one of his own. "I can't take you home. I don't drive, so I can't offer you a ride." Rather than ask what she was curious to find, Sherlock decided he'd enjoy the hunt. Saliva could be as good as blood when it came to a genetic imprint.

"I will contact you if there's anything worth reporting." But it was also possible it would slip his mind. Promises like that frequently did. It was difficult for Sherlock to think of people who weren't directly in front of him.
