I love him. I’d follow him anywhere. Who: Sam Gamgee and Zelda When: Early January Where: Zelda’s garden What: Gardening advice Rating/Warning: Low/None Status: Complete
Zelda knew that she was going to be moving in with Link soon, so she didn’t want to do too much work in her garden. But the snow that’d come around Christmas had killed a lot of her plants, so she needed someone professional to come in and help her out with advice on which plants needed to go, and which ones could stay. Which were truly dead, and which were just hibernating.
She invited Sam over to check things out, and was busying herself with some looseleaf tea and a glass teapot, really excited about trying out her new tea diffuser when she heard the doorbell. It must have been Sam--he’s the only one she gave the gate code to--so she called out “Come on in!”
When Zelda had called him, Sam had been happy to come over and help his friend; especially since he hadn’t seen Zelda in a while. Pulling his truck up the drive after the gates had opened, Sam parked and headed up to the front door where he rang the bell. Hearing the faint sound of Zelda’s voice from another room, Sam tried the door and found it unlocked, which he figured she could do seeing as she had a gate and all that around the house. Closing the door behind him, he stood in the foyer for a moment or two before walking further into the house proper, “Zelda? It’s Sam.” Of course she must have known that though otherwise she probably wouldn’t have told him to come in without coming to the door herself.
Zelda had a tray with the glass teapot, the diffuser already inside it, making the delish tea, and a couple of teacups on it. She carried the tray carefully--though she’d found after a bunch of dreams about Hyrule she was quite a bit more graceful in this world--and came to meet him at the door. “Sam! Hi! I made tea. Let’s go sit and catch up for a minute before checking out the garden.” She said, the motioned with a jerk of her head for him to follow her into the other room.
Sam smiled when he saw Zelda, “Hey. Tea sounds good to me.” He followed Zelda out to the other room where she intended for them to have tea, “How’ve you been?” He couldn’t quite recall the last time he’d seen Zelda, so it was nice to get the chance now, “Busy, I’m guessing.”
“Busy. I’ve decided to move in with Link, so… I’m going to need someone to take care of the garden. I mean, we’re planning on renting this place out, but I figure that’ll take some pressure off the tenant’s shoulders. So I’ve been packing and planning. One of my projects fell through, so I’m looking for new things to fill that time… and I’ve been contacted to audition for a new movie. That’s a good thing, I’m excited about it.” Zelda blushed when she realized she’d been babbling. “Sorry, here, have some tea. Tell me how you’ve been.” She poured them each a cup, then settled on the sofa.
“We can definitely tend to the garden. If not me personally then one of our other gardeners for sure.” Before he left Sam would get all the details from Zelda and then go over it with his father to get back to Zelda. “That’s awesome though. Where does Link live? Are you moving far?” Of course he hoped that it was still in Orange County, not that he wouldn’t come visit Zelda if she moved outside of the county, but it was just easier if she was still in the OC. “And I haven’t really been up to much. Working where there hasn’t been snow, which was really crazy by the way. Having dreams and spending time with my family. Nothing too exciting really.”
“He lives… gosh, it’s like the other side of the county. He lives on an Artichoke farm--but it’s like, a real farm. They have cows and stuff. I’ve milked a cow.” She said, sitting up and puffing out her chest proudly, as if this was something to brag about. “Gosh, I can’t imagine! The snow killed so many of my plants… I can’t imagine how it must have done to people with bigger gardens or more plants than mine…”
“How’re you ever going to live on a farm?” Sam asked, smirking. “Is this gonna be like that reality show with Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie?” He was teasing and he hoped that Zelda realized that she didn’t think that he was making fun of her. “That’s cool though. I’ve never milked a cow before. What’s it like?”
“Oh, undoubtedly.” Zelda said, grinning softly. She didn’t mind the tease. It was fun, playful. “I have no idea what I’m doing, but Link’s really patient with me. He’ll show me everything I need to do. So long as I don’t need to get too close to chickens or something. Ooh, maybe I can get a goat!”
"Do you know how to take care of a goat?" Sam didn't either, but the mental image of Zelda with a goat was kind of amusing, "So how'd you decide to move there instead of him moving here?"
Zelda laughed. “No idea! I’m sure I could learn, though.” The grin on her face faded a little as Sam asked his next question. She shrugged her shoulders. “His parents lived on that farm. He could never leave it. I don’t really have any attachment to this place, anyway. I’m going to move the Hot Tub, but really… everything else can stay. I’ll get some tenants in to rent the place, and that’ll be a nice income. It’s paid off, so there aren’t many expenses involved.”
Sam nodded, “Makes sense. It says a lot about you that you’re willing to move to a smaller place for him.” A lot of people of Zelda’s status wouldn’t give up the big fancy house and he was glad that she wasn’t like those people. She was famous, but had stayed pretty humble, which was a nice change. “And hey, if you have any space over there that you need help gardening or anything, feel free to call me. Might mean that I finally get to meet Link too.” Sam had heard a lot about Link, but hadn’t actually met him yet.
“I love him. I’d follow him anywhere.” Zelda said. She said it with such genuine honesty and humbleness that there should be absolutely no doubt that she meant every word. She nodded once. “I’ll absolutely call you. I think he might have a patch of land for me to do my own gardening in, and then I’ll need your help! And if you ever need extra work, I’m sure he could use some help on the farm. They grow Artichokes. When they’re in season they need help with all the harvesting and whatnot.”
Sam smiled, because it was completely obvious that Zelda was head over heels with love with Link and it was nice to see that, “Well just let me know and I’ll be more than happy to fit you into my schedule.” He said, taking a sip of his tea.
“Works for me!” Zelda said, beaming. She was glad she had so many friends who were willing to help her out, to come and do work for her. Making business associates that were also her friends was what she did best! “All right, let’s go out to the garden, and we can do some real work.” She teased, pulling herself up from her chair.
