David Nolan is very charming. ([info]knightinflannel) wrote in [info]valarlogs,

Entry tags:!complete, david nolan (prince charming), regina mills (evil queen)

Who: Regina and David.
What: First meeting.
Where: The elementary school.
When: Monday, December 2.
Rating: Low.
Status: Complete.

After the latest episode of dreams, David had decided, against all advice, that he had to tell Mary Margaret. He couldn't keep looking at her and thinking about the whole Snow White thing. It felt almost like he was keeping a secret. Maybe she'd think he was crazy, but David couldn't imagine staying silent about it.

So he drove down to the school she taught at around the time classes let out. As he worked out what he would say, or how he'd say it, David realized he didn't know where her classroom was. Talk about an awkward start.

However, it was easy to find the main office, and David walked inside. The secretary was away from the desk and he glanced around, rubbing the back of his neck.

"Hello?"

Classes were over, but the work wasn't. Regina was still in her office, and probably would be for awhile. There was the holiday program to plan and then after that there were would be winter break - one would think she'd get to take a break too, but that hardly seemed to be the case. There was too much to do as it was, tasks stacking up like dead bodies bricks, ready for her to sort through. She much preferred staying busy though.

When she heard the interruption in the form of a masculine voice out in the main office, she was startled - startled enough to drop the pile of papers she was currently photocopying (where the hell was her secretary, anyway? This was not Regina's job) so they scattered like confetti.

"Coming," she spoke up, clearing her throat. And cleaned up her mess, of course.

Then she emerged, the paragon of poisonous things, in her Armani business suit and murderous heels. An invisible string pulled the pearls of her spine straight as a finely crafted arrow but when she saw who it was, her head tipped to the side like she was trying to place him. The fringe of inky lashes befell the apples of her cheeks in a look that bordered on almost warm-blooded.

Almost.

"Hello David. It is David, right?"

He heard the heels before she even appeared around the corner, and when he glanced over, he wasn't expecting what he saw. It took a lot of will power to not just stare like a deer in the headlights, but, fortunately, David was too polite to be caught like that. But he did stand up a bit straighter, feeling defensive without having much reason to.

Dreams weren't a reason to distrust a person, he told himself.

"Uh - Yes. David, how did you know?" He could guess pretty well how she knew, but for now he kept his smile on. For now.

"I don't know. I just thought I knew you from somewhere." Truly, it was an honest answer - she really didn't know, besides that she recognized the name David Nolan from her dreams and because of it, her eyes slitted like a snake's (like the two-headed vipers she had dreamed about, too bad those didn't exist) and they traveled from the top of his shiny dirty blonde head down toward his shoes, cleaving him in half or potentially making him feel like he needed to bathe, but it was as if she was checking to see if he had a weapon on him or not. Odd.

Her eyes bordered on black, glinting like flint. Curious. "Can I help you?" Surely he didn't come to see her. It seemed obvious why he was here, or like they'd been in this situation a million times before. Only with more medieval armor and queenly garb, less 'smells like pine air freshener' and 'care about myself and others!' posters on the wall.

In response to her answer, and to the look that felt like she was looking into the depths of whatever might lie in his soul, David tipped his chin up just slightly. Maybe they were just dreams, but this stance appeared to come naturally to both of them. David's smile finally slipped from his face into something a bit more guarded.

"I'm trying to find a classroom. Mary Margaret Blanchard? She teaches fourth grade."

Come to think of it, David wasn't entirely certain he liked the idea of Mary Margaret spending her days here. It brought up something unnecessarily protective in him. Old instincts.

Oh, right. Mary Margaret. Sweet, darling, sugar-spun, creamy vanilla Mary Margaret. Regina smirked, a bittersweet twisting of her painted mouth upward - and she moved to settle on the edge of the secretary's desk, tucking one knee over the other since the incompetent woman had probably gotten lost during a smoke break outside. Let her wander for a bit, she wasn't needed now.

"I've known her awhile. She's never mentioned a gentlemanly caller before. Is this a recent development?"

Did Regina have the room number? Of course, but she'd just keep that info under wraps for now. Because, really, why leave so soon, David? We're old friends here. Pull up a plastic chair and stay awhile.

David watched her, as if anticipating her to strike at any moment. Old instincts again. Just dreams, he reminded himself.

"We're just friends. I thought I'd stop by on her."

He stayed standing, waiting.

One hand dragged through her hair, fingers fussing with it, tucking it back behind her ears as her lips pursed then released with a pop of sound to break the silence - or to burst the bubble of tension that had begun choking the life out of the room, either one. There was no reason to feel strange around this man. They didn't have to be enemies. What had he done to her besides come at her with a variety of sharp weapons? What had she done to him besides ruin his life and probably caused him to shed do-gooding tears into his pillow at night, which she'd eagerly collect in a vial?

Can't we just let the past go?

"How nice." She decided to just skip the spoonful of sugar. "You don't have to feel weird around me. I barely know you. I'm not..." Really, she wasn't who he thought she was. Right?

Well, if they were looking at it like that, it wasn't as if Regina had done a lot to him personally where the dreams were concerned. It was mostly her treatment of a certain princess, and the general heartlessness it showed, that made him bristle. But apparently they were going to try and push past that.

Honestly, David was sort of glad they weren't even going to bring it up at all.

"I know. Sorry, it's a strange day, I guess." He put another smile on his face. Maybe he was entirely mistaken, after all. That didn't stop the caution from creeping through him.

She hummed sympathetically, yes, yes, maybe you're mad here, darling, shall we fetch the good doctor? But it was alright. Quite easy to mistake Regina for an Evil Queen. They both dressed fabulously and to emphasize proper dΓ©colletage, the similarities were astounding.

"Maybe we can be friends." A bright smile was tossed his way, enough to inspire cavities. Yes, cozying up to the demoness and her talons, that was always a wise move. "But anyway...if you really came to see her..."

And didn't come to shoot the shit with a fellow dreamwalker, "...she's in room 405, but she might have left for the day already. Want me to walk you there?" From the way she slid off the desk, it seemed she was ready to anyway.

David wasn't sure what to say. His lips pressed into a thin line as he debated his options. On the one hand, something inside of him was forcibly saying don't be friends, remember what she is. On the other hand, despite presenting a very intimidating front and having a knack for unnerving David, there was nothing to suggest she was a bad person.

"Maybe," he said, at last. Keep smiling, he told himself.

But the relief was there when she got to the point, and he almost didn't mind that he'd have to endure the walk with her. "That sounds great, thank you," David admitted. "Truth be told, I'd probably get lost. And forgot the room number before I got down the hall."

This man. Regina, ever the queen of sass (and evil, apparently - hey, if the killer stiletto fit), wanted to flutter her lashes like hummingbird's wings again and say something like well, truth be told, you probably would - because you're a dolt but that was just rude. By 'be friends' that clearly meant that she wanted to take him apart just to see what made him tick, and then rearrange the pieces like a wooden puzzle. But she'd settle for awkward exchanges for now; she wasn't going to let dreams dictate her life.

"I'm sure you wouldn't, don't worry," she said with a husky little laugh, shutting the main office door behind her and leading her adorable sheep out into the hall. "It's not terribly confusing." After all, the elementary school-aged kids figured it out. "Anyway, Mary Margaret and I used to run in the same circles in New York. Kind of funny - " And brain breaking, "...ending up in the same place again, right?"

He decided not to go into the whole issue. There was nothing he wanted to do to create any sort of weakness she could claw at. She just seemed that sort of person. Apparently David wasn't going to find anything redeemable about her, and he felt almost guilty about that.

"You did?" David's eyebrows raised. He was genuinely surprised. Of course, he'd already been surprised by the fact that everyone seemed to be from the same area in New York, and now that. "It is a pretty strange coincidence. The OC seems to be pretty good with those."

"Yes, our families knew each other. We ran into each other at social functions a lot." And Mary Margaret had always been so friendly - so sparkly, floating from person to person on a cotton candy cloud. Her too-nice head probably doubled as a chamber of cupcakes, sweet thoughts all of the time. Regina was suspicious of it, to say the least. Because anyone that genuine was probably a killer in disguise.

The poison-clack of heels carried her down the hall, walking beside the Prince. "This whole place is strange. I suppose I'm glad I moved but I wasn't expecting much of it," she said, mouth ruefully twisting in a private half-smile. No, wasn't expecting to be dreaming of herself as The Most Hated. Not at all.

"Huh, small world."

As Regina continued to speak, David glanced at her. Wasn't expecting much of it. David could sympathize, to a degree. He hadn't expected dreaming about a double life that involved being Prince Charming, he hadn't expected running into other people from those dreams, either. But he knew that his dreams had to be a bit better than whatever Regina might be dreaming. He couldn't imagine having all that hate inside his head, even for a little bit.

"I have a feeling it's just going to get stranger, really."

Unfortunately so.Β  Did Regina want it to get stranger?Β  Not really.Β  Maybe if she didn't sleep...well, that was a thought to consider.Β  Perhaps if she avoided unconsciousness, if she evaded it swiftly and didn't even attempt to meet the Sandman night after night, day after day, then she wouldn't have to deal with the life being choked out of her by so much anger, so much bitterness, so much black tar that coated her lungs and made it difficult to breathe.Β  How long could one stay awake?Β  She'd probably go mad first.

"I don't want to hurt you," she said, effectively breaking the ice - or addressing the elephant in the hallway.Β  "So if you think I do, then you're wrong."

She paused in front of Mary Margaret's classroom.Β  Waiting.

When they stopped, David looked a bit like a kid who just got caught stealing a cookie. The guilt of her calling out his unfounded worries was evident in his face.

"No - No, I know." He said, every part of him radiating with sincerity and apology. "I'm sorry. I know, it's not even a reasonable thought. They're just dreams, right?"

Because by now, David knew for sure that she must be having them, too. And, honestly, as much as he didn't want to mention it all, it felt a bit like a relief to just say the words. But his eyes caught the number on the door and he nodded, remember why he was there in the first place.

"Thank you. For showing me. I appreciate it."

"Of course. Just dreams," Regina agreed, and as much as she wanted to believe that she just wasn't entirely certain. The sensations that came along with her disturbing nocturnal images tended to grate on her - they haunted like icy cold ghosts. As pleasant as it was to be swathed in silks and velvets, in pearls and gemstones, to walk with the type of liquid grace she used even now - like a predator - there were still things she questioned. And did not want answers to.

His thanks was met with a baby smile, one day it might grow up to be the real deal. "Not a problem...I'm sure I'll be seeing you around more, if you and Mary Margaret are good friends."

After a moment of hesitation, David held out his hand. Maybe they couldn't really be friends - Regina had a natural sort of hostility about her that David was uncertain about even without the dreams. But they could get along, at any rate.

"I'm sure you're right. Have a good day, Regina."

She shook his hand - or rather, it was her clasping his with both of hers, sandwiched in between velvet skin and bad luck and bad choices - and then Regina let go. Even if Mary Margaret wasn't here, David could find his way back to the school's entrance/exit just fine; she had to finish up, and possibly plan on stopping for a bottle of champagne to wash down her headache medicine with when she got home. It had been an odd encounter. Not bad...just odd.

"You too, David. Take care, and until we meet again." Which would probably be in one way or another, in the waking world or not.

Then she turned and headed off in her power heels, leaving him to his lovebird devices.
