Who: Jim Kirk and Fleur
What: Randomly being drawn
Where: Somewhere in Irvine?
When: Today
Status: Complete!
Rating: PG13

For whatever reason, Jim had woken that morning feeling drawn to the Irvine area. Not one to question random urges, he'd gotten into his car and started cruising through town. Part of him wanted to question it. Was it mind control? An alien? It could be aliens, that wasn't above the realm of possibilities.

He felt a sudden urge and pulled over, looking around.

Fleur shuffled a little further up her shoulder as she reached for her coffee. One could never have too much coffee no matter what time of the day it was, maybe it was because she was French. It didn't matter she needed coffee if she was going to deal with eight hours of bitchy ballerinas. Dancing she liked the drama she could do without.

Though when she walked outside she could not help but notice the man that had pulled over and was looking around. "Nice car," she told him absently as she stopped a moment to admire his car, not that she knew anything about cars.

"Looking for something?" She asked him in an off-handed manner in her accented English. It sure seemed like he was looking for something or someone.

Accents were hot. Kirk was on that like white on rice. He gave her a charming smile and walked over, "Would you believe it if I answered that I wasn't sure?"

Because it was the truth. Still, he'd found something. A very attractive something who looked very bored. The weird thing was he felt no compunction to leave. On the contrary, he wanted the exact opposite!

"Jim Kirk." He held out his hand.

Fleur gave him one of her easy smiles, it wasn't like it was hard to talk to strangers as she wasn't shy. "Should I not believe you?" She asked as she studied him a little closer wondering if she missed something, reading people was usually something she was good at. Not like he was going to tell her if he wasn't.

"Fleur Delacour," she told him as she shook his hand. For some reason she didn't feel the need to keep moving. "So I guess if you do not know what you are looking for I cannot help you."

"It may be that I found it," Jim proferred. He gestured at his car, "Want to go for a ride? No pressure. There's pepper spray in the glove box. You know, just in case."

The man grinned cheekily at her, "I like to provide."

Fleur shook her head trying to force back the grin that was hinted at on her lips. The guy really did need to find better pick up lines and even though normally she would have walked away, she was still there. "Sure." She wasn't even sure why she agreed to go for a ride with him, it was something she wouldn't normally do. Riding around in cars with strangers wasn't even something she would normally consider doing.

"I do not need it, I have my super ninja ballet skills." She told him lightly in jest. Something told her she wasn't going to need any fighting skills, not today any how.

Fleur shook her head as she reached for the handle on the car door. "You really need to find better pick up lines," she really had never been the type to sugar coat anything so people usually knew what she was thinking. "I guess I should ask you where we are going so I know just in case I have to call someone to rescue me." She tossed her bag onto the floor before getting into the car.

Sometimes Kirk liked to take the brash or the corny, because it was fun. It got him shot down more often than not, but like a diamond, he was slowly beginning to become more refined. He just wasn't quite there, yet.

"I haven't thought that far ahead. I'd planned a long drive to nowhere but plans change. How about picnic on the beach?"

Fleur shrugged her shoulders figuring maybe being a bit spontaneous would be good for her, it wasn't like she got to do things like this all the time. "Sounds good to me," she told him as she slipped her sunglasses from the top of her head and put them on properly.

The truth was she was rather fond of the beach as it reminded her of home. Home when she had lived in Marseille anyhow. "So do you always pick up random girls on your way through or just me?" Again, she was kidding or at least partially.

"Random girls, little people, a poodle once," Jim replied lightly. He pulled out into traffic, elbow sticking out the window. There was a place that had premade picnic lunches, and that was the only stop he made on the way to the beach. It was a nice day. Maybe he should have brought swim trunks.

Once parked, he glanced at her with a leisurely grin on his face, "Where in France are you from? Because that's definitely not Louisiana cajun or French Canadian."

Fleur had to admit that the idea of going to the beach was a good one, she had always spent a lot of time on the beach back at home when she was a child. She had been relieved to find that the place they were moving to in California had a warmer climate as her and cold weather did not necessarily to well together. "A poodle? Least it was probably cute. You have to watch out for them strange girls you pick up."

Once out of the car, Fleur was glad that she had decided to put a sundress on instead of pants today as it made walking on the beach easier. Her heels she could always take off and carry. She raised an eyebrow at his accurate assumption about her accent and answered his question, "Marseille originally but I moved to Paris when I was seven." She really had been all over. "Do I get to ask you where you are from now?" Fleur didn't mind the back and forth questions.

He'd met people from both areas, and the accents were all distinct enough.

"If you can guess I'll buy you some ice cream," Jim replied, slipping his keys into his pocket and walking alongside her. Whoever invented sundresses had his eternal thanks, right next to the guy who invented the bikini, and the guy who invented leather pants.

"I'll probably buy you ice cream, anyway."

"Well," Fleur faked a look of concentration knowing she was not too good at guessing games. "How about I go with the safe answer and guess that you are from around here?" It was a logical guess and probably the one he expected but there was nothing to tell her otherwise.

"Maybe I will buy you ice cream," she told him with a smirk. Now that he had mentioned it she wanted it; with her strict dance training she had always had to watch her diet but this wasn't a day for that. Fleur wasn't sure she had ice cream more than a few times. "Just not chocolate though I am guessing you are more of a chocolate person than a vanilla?" Another complete guess on her part.

Jim laughed, "I'm ice cream agnostic. There's no one flavor I like more than any other. Though I have good memories of mint chocolate chip."

They had all sorts of low fat ice creams, too, but this wasn't the day for that either. It felt like a day to indulge, and Kirk intended to indulge at least a little bit, "And I'm from Iowa."

He wasn't even thinking with his little brain. Well not entirely. He just wanted to have fun.

A smile blossomed across her face as Fleur listened to him speak. "Well, I am glad to hear you have no problems with ice creams," she told him with a another soft laugh as she pulled her shoes off. It felt nice to feel the ground underneath her feet. "Me not so much... Long as it is not chocolate we will be okay." Maybe it made her odd but Fleur hated chocolate.

"Iowa?" She looked at him slightly surprised. "What is in Iowa?" To her it was just some place that she knew from a map. "And why did you come here, California of all places?" She was slightly intrigued to who this man was beside her.

It did make her odd, but that didn't bother Jim. He liked the odder, more exotic women. He gave her a smile, "A place with a lot of corn. I came out here to join the Navy. Didn't work out but I stuck around. Like the climate, like the people. Did a couple of road trips, but nothing beats SoCal."

They arrived, conveniently, at an ice cream stand. And lo and behold, mint chocolate chip!

Fleur listened and pondered his words for a moment. It was more than she could say that she had done but she was still young and had time or she liked to hope so. "So what do you do now?" It was more of an interesting question than what she did all the time; that answer was simple, dance. School sometimes too.

She was quick to order strawberry, it was a good enough choice, but then she had to ask him. "Road trips to any where interesting?" Fleur had surely had a few interesting trips in her life. There was one specific memory of her time in Russia that always immediately came to mind.

Jim pondered for a moment, trying to find the best way to describe his occupations. Captain of the USS Enterprise was certainly out.

"Self-defense courses, and I take people to rough it in the woods and teach them how not to die." He grinned, "Like Survivorman or Dual Survival." He didn't like Bear Grylls, sorry, "You?"

"Hmm..Had a fun one to Las Vegas last month. One to Florida. There was this one time in Wisconsin but I like to forget about that one."

"The woods?" Fleur looked at him kind of intrigued not to say it was something she wanted to do, no, camping was a word she had only heard other people talk about. She was just fine with staying on the beach or in civilization though she suppose it would be a good thing to know. "Like who?" She really did have no idea who he was talking about.

"Me?" Fleur made a face instinctively. It wasn't that she hated what she did, she didn't, but it was getting old for someone who liked adventure. It had been fun at first, when she was winning competitions and traveling, now it was routine and boring again she wanted something else. "I dance, all the time. I get up in the morning and go to the studio, then I sit a few classes at University which are mostly still dance because that is my major, then I go back to the studio and dance more." She waved it off with her hand. "Yours is more interesting." Unless you were entertained with watching fights over tutus and dealing with sometimes grabby partners.

"Seems like you travel quite a bit..." She was tempted to ask him about Wisconsin but for once she held her questions. "If you want interesting try Russia," Fleur had to laugh slightly at the memory of her time there. "Though it is slightly amazing the Russian ballerinas can have a bottle of vodka and still pirouette nicely without falling over," most of the time that is.

"Woods, high desert, mountains." Jim nodded his head as he mentally checked them off, "I wouldn't take a complete novice into the high desert, but the woods or mountains I've done."

Smiling, he replied, "I've taken soccer moms, a group of cheerleaders, girl scouts, boy scouts, businessmen....I always have a back up in case they can't make it, but I like to make them rough it. No tents. Teaching how to build a basic shelter, that sort of thing."

He tilted his head at dance. She didn't look like any stripper he'd ever meant, but..ah, that explained it, "I'd believe it, about the Russians."

Fleur shot him a skeptical look, yeah, her and the outdoors were not always a good combination. It made her appreciate what he did more though because she knew it wasn't something she could do. "If I did not know better, I would say you are crazy but I am sure you know what you are doing."

"That sounds almost cruel," useful but cruel. Fleur couldn't understand anyone doing that willingly but there were plenty of people into the camping and roughing it scene. "How many of them actually make it?" That was what she was curious to here.

Fleur had to laugh when she seen him give her the same look people always did when she said she was a dancer. They always thought stripper. "I always forget I should tell people I am a football player," and by football she meant soccer, "Then I would not get that look. Not sure they would believe me, I am not football type."

He could tell already. But there was no judgement there. Not everyone could handle roughing it in the out doors. A lot of people couldn't handle it even with tents, mattresses and sleeping bags.

"Not cruel. They do pay for the privilage." Jim winked at her, and took a taste of his ice cream. That hit the spot, "I'd say about half make it three days."

The man looked her over, "I don't see you being much into football. You could mention you're into ballet, people would understand that. Not that you look like a stripper."

"I cannot imagine why they would do that," okay maybe she could but it was still a foreign concept in her mind. It wasn't something she would sign up for but it did sound like something her father would sign her up for. She wasn't going to give him any ideas. "I say that is still a good number, you must be good at what you do."

"You mean and miss all the awkward stares?" She gave him a look of her own that was half amusement half annoyance. "Then what would I use as a conversation starter? And you are right, I am too pretty to be a football player or a stripper and I am in a lot better shape too..." Fleur was going to leave the joke at that. Instead she tried a bit of her ice cream. There were many more awkward but true things she could add to that statement.

"Lets say something happens and civilization falls. How many people would actually make it a week without the comforts of home?"

Jim smiled at her, "Thank you. I get an uptick whenever a new show comes on tv about it. The avid watchers actually do seem to pick up enough tips to last longer."

He held up a hand, and defended the exotic dancer profession, "I've met many a pretty stripper. I meant more your body type and refinement. You're...elegant."

"Probably not many," she had to admit that much. "Then it is a good thing I met you, n'est-ce pas?" Fleur gave him a smile. "Surely you would at least see to it I made it two weeks," she told him with a laugh.

Fleur gave him a shy smile. "Thank you, I think?" Not everyone preferred her type but that was okay. "Okay, enough about dancing though because honestly, I have had enough of it for a lifetime." Yet she always went back to it. "When is your next one of these trips?"

Jim laughed. His expression was easy-going, "I'd make sure you'd last three, or even four. Though it's a matter of stamina and willpower at that point."

He shook his head, "I don't have one scheduled for a week or two, though I could always move one up if you're interested."

Or quite possibly insane. That was always an option when dealing with just about anything Jim Kirk was involved in. He did, after all, intend to go up into space in an experimental space ship, and that took guts, courage, and an unusual mind.

"Alright, deal." Fleur told him in her accented English. "After week four I am on my own." She was a lot stronger than she appeared so she was pretty sure, with a bit of help, she could manage it.

Fleur thought about it a moment, "Maybe I would." It sure beat having to be stuck inside for a weekend practicing. "It would be nice to be outside for once."

Jim had finished the last of his ice cream, and even the cone. He wiped his mouth with a napkin, and tossed that in a trash can. He turned, walking backwards as he talked. As if there was nothing behind him and he was willing to handle the risk.

"It'll be an open invitation," Jim replied, flashing a broad smile.

"I will keep that in mind," Fleur told him lightly knowing that she might just take him up on that offer. It wasn't like it wasn't good to know and she had said she wanted to different things. It would be another conversation for for another day.

She was starting to think this, whatever it was, wasn't going to be all that bad.
