I’m a killer. It’s as simple as that Lara was thinking, as she got up from her desk and padded her way out into the rest of the house. She wasn’t at all ready to concede to that side of herself, so she dismissed the thought. It had the effect of making a popping sound, and she blinked and looked around. “That was odd.”
Lara turned into the kitchen and was treated to a view of Sam bent over around the corner, wearing very short shorts. Oh hell, that’s just not fair. God, she’s gorgeous. Right, Lara, don’t rush things. She’s still settling in, and you don’t want to mess things up besides.
A bubble floated behind her head, the words fading off of it as the thought faded, only to be replaced by a vivid picture of just what Lara wanted to do to Sam right now. She shook her head and there was that popping sound again as she pushed the thought away.
“Sam, what are you doing?” I swear she’s a little nutters, but that’s one of the things I love about her. I just wish I could be as free spirited as her.
"Shh!" Sam's voice hushed Lara, though her body was still stretched around the corner. She was plotting a way to get Dani's cats to fly - if, indeed, they could really fly, which she was beginning to doubt. If they could though, they were so going to do it any second now.
But only if Lara didn't startle them.
She had a camcorder in her hands. She pressed play. Her whole body tensed as she prepared to jump fully into the hallway that lead to the Foyer. Muscles rippled down her legs, and then she let out a loud cackling noise and jumped out of view.
There was a mass scurrying sound of feet sliding on tile, followed by the thundering of Sam chasing them, "FLY, my pretties, FLYYYYY!"
"Oh my god, Sam..." Lara stood there for a moment, Sam's legs one repeat loop over her head. She made the thought 'pop' and then gave chase. "They're not really going to fly! Sam! Have you lost your bloody mind?!"
"They'll fly, they'll fly if I have to put them in little harnesses!" Sam chased the cats up the stairs and into the master bedroom, then out onto the balcony attached to it, in a loop around it, back through, into the sitting room.
She cackled madly, chasing them past Lara and out her bedroom door, then back down the main stairs. Had there been some kind of bubble floating over Lara's head? She'd have to take a look at that in a second. But first: Cat Chasing!
"It was a freak thing! They can't fly on command!" Lara followed Sam, marveling at the girl's energy. She sat on the railing next to the stairs and kicked her feet a little. One of the cats sped by. She jumped, grabbing onto it and swooping it into her arms. "Gotcha!"
Lonestar yowled angrily in Lara's arms, though it might have been mostly for show. She'd just rescued him from the scary woman with the camera, after all. The look in his little cat eyes might have been the equivalent of 'save me'.
Sam skidded to a stop, then panned her camera back up to Lara, "He can't fly if you keep holding onto him like that!"
"Look at him. He's terrified! You poor thing." A bubble appeared over Lara's head, with the words, I knew I shouldn't have sent that video, but terrorizing Renji is far too fun. Oh Sam...
The brunette looked over at Sam, clucking her tongue and trying to give her a mock glare. "Chasing him all over isn't going to make him fly."
The glare was ruined by the scritching she was doing to his ears and by the bubble showing her thinking about how soft the cat's fur was and if Sam's hair was softer.
The bubbles were distracting. When did Lara get thought bubbles? What was going on in them? Sam zoomed in on the bubble, ignoring Lara's scolding and how adorable she was being with the cat right now, "I don't think my hair is softer than the cat's. Lonestar's hair is pretty soft."
She sighed a bit, "I guess they won't fly, though. I was really hoping that if I scared them enough some survival instincts would kick in!"
Lara let the cat down, then blinked at Sam. Had she said that out loud? She rubbed the back of her neck. Sam's crazy sometimes. Okay a lot of the time. She drives me nuts, but in a good way. Is there a good way?
"Flying is not the normal survival instinct for a cat." She came over to Sam and put her palm over the camera, teasingly. She liked to get close to Sam, and after her dreams lately just having her near was like a soothing balm. She had warm fuzzies.
"And, being cats, they don't do what you want on command. But we didn't have cats back at the flat so I can forgive you not being able to handle them."
"It would be if they were flying cats," Sam countered. Her eyes, however, weren't on Lara, nor were they on her camera lense. They were instead focused on a space of air off to the side of Lara's head a bit.
"I'm crazy and drive you nuts?"
Her mouth hung open, and she looked at Sam as though the girl were somehow reading her mind. She blinked, then turned her head to follow Sam's gaze. "Oh.. Oh my god what is that?"
I'm losing my mind, I'm really losing my mind, but Sam sees it, right? Sam sees it and I'm not losing my mind. Oh god, Lara don't think about anything ----------- The words were replaced by images of archaeological artifacts as Lara concentrated very hard on thinking about just that. Not about Sam in those shorts. Not even about wanting to kiss Dani. Sam knew, of course. They'd talked. But thinking about Dani would lead to thinking about Sam and ArchaeologyArchaeologyArchaeologyArchaeo
That was a conflicting set of thoughts. Wait, was that a mental thought about her in shorts and kissing someone?
Sam squinted a bit, and pointed at the thought bubbles that were still floating above Lara's head, "What's that going on in your thought bubbles now? Who are you kissing there? Why are you thinking about me in my shorts and... this is way more interesting than flying cats."
She pulled her camera back up to her eye and zoomed in on the thought bubbles again, "Think about something else, Lara!"
Lara stared at her friend, wide eyed and red-faced. "Your shorts are really nice?" And your legs are way too long, they just keep going "Eh..er. I wasn't kissing anyone, you're seeing things, can we make this go away now?"
Damn it, Sam...I'm not going to get out of this easily...
"No, you're not. I've got it all on tape!"
Now that the cats were no longer the focus of the attention, they wandered off to sun themselves in the living room. Sam didn't mind, because Lara had her entire focus.
Especially considering a lot of Lara's thoughts tended to be focusing on her, "You like my legs? You never look at yours, do you? They're just as long!"
She's talking nonsense, Lara thought, before trying to think of things that weren't embarrassing. "I never wear shorts like that either. I'm not saying it's bad. It's...nice?" She facepalmed mentally. When Sam focused on something it was nigh impossible to change her attention, and now she was the subject and Lara was struggling to bring herself under control, or think of innocent things.
She hadn't exactly slept well and now she couldn't even think! "Of course I like your legs, you're my best friend, not my sister. We had this discussion. God, I can't go outside until this stops. I may never be able to go outside again."
"Well it probably won't last that long. Nothing that happens here seems to be that permanent, you know?"
Sam bounced on her heels a bit, even though that messed her footage up. It seemed pretty clear that being on camera like this was making her friend very uncomfortable, "We had this conversation, yeah, but I kind of felt like you were holding back then."
She turned her camera off and let it hang around her neck, "You're being silly, sweetie."
Sam really was the best person Lara knew. She smiled at the object of her affections and reached over to ruffle her hair. "I was still trying to accept it back then. I feel like there's a world that's opened and I want to explore it but I'm really terrified of the idea. You know how my dates usually go."
"I know that they get super awkward when you start babbling about archaeology because you're not sure what else to talk about," Sam admitted, with a bit of a giggle.
She wrapped an arm around Lara and squeezed her, "You just need to date someone who finds that as adorable as I do, that's all."
"But I like archaeology. They need to like that or really, it's not going to work out." Lara swallowed at Sam finding her adorable. She put her hand on the back of Sam's head, pressing it against her so the girl couldn't see her thoughts. Which was the only reason. Really. She wanted Sam to find her adorable, of course. She wanted Sam to be that one.
But the thought that Sam didn't feel the same way or might reject her stilled the words before they could leave her mouth. She wondered if Sam was being intentionally oblivious or just adorable.
She wasn't entirely oblivious, actually, but she didn't know how to handle her own feelings. Sam had never had a home, she'd never settled down in one place, or on one wardrobe, one camera, or even one haircut for too long. Lara was the most steady thing in her life, and the only person in her life who'd ever given her attention longer than a minute or two.
Sam didn't want to screw that up, and since Lara hadn't outright said anything, she thought maybe they were both just trying to pretend it wasn't happening.
It was a shame that she didn't have thought bubbles for Lara to see. She squeezed her friend, and nodded a bit, "Yeah, it has to be someone who at least thinks archaeology is awesome, even if they aren't one or whatever."
"Yeah...that exactly." Sam is so warm, and she fits perfectly against me. I can do this just...not like this. Not until I know for sure. But I think I might find it impossible to find someone as good as she is for me. She wiped at her mental bubble, trying to replace it with random thoughts about cats. Sam was the half of her that kept her from becoming too grounded. Life sometimes needed one to float above the ground.
"And maybe someone who wants to go on your adventures with you... it should definitely be someone like that. Who believes in you and goes on digs with you or is at least supportive of the digs and..." Sam stopped to take a breath. She realised she was describing herself.
This was a kissing moment. Lara should cup Sam's face and kiss her because words weren't enough and the things Sam were saying were like simultaneously jabbing a knife into her heart while also inflating it. It was a kissing moment, and she missed the opportunity. "I'm pretty sure a woman like that is one in a million, Sam." A woman like you.
"There are billions of women in the world, I'm sure you'll find that one perfect woman out there somewhere," Sam replied, softly. Her voice was even more muffled since her face was still pressed against Lara.
She didn't really want her to, though. She didn't want Lara to find her. It was a horrible thought, one she immediately felt guilty over.
I already have, said the words that hung over Lara's head.
