Navi was curled up with baby Zelda, snuggling her close to her chest. The baby was sleeping, quietly suckling as she dozed. Running a hand over the baby’s downy brown hair, Navi hummed a song that would be immediately familiar to Link as Saria’s song.
Link wasn’t far away. In fact, he was a step from Navi’s front door, his finger just touching the doorbell. When it rang, he could hear the jingle through the window. He bounced on his heels while he waited, knowing it wouldn’t be long, but antsy at the same time. He was an uncle for the first time--regardless of the fact that he and Navi weren’t technically related--and he was eager to see the first extension of his family.
When the doorbell rang, baby Zelda stirred a little but didn’t wake. Navi stood, walking slowly to the door so that way she wouldn’t jostle the baby too much. But when she saw Link, her wings came out and she fluttered to give him a one armed hug. “I’m so glad you’re here!”
A broad smile bloomed on Link’s face. He hadn’t thought he’d see the baby at the door, he’d expected he’d have to go inside first and be led through a few rooms to her crib, or something like that. “She’s so little,” he said, hugging Navi back, careful not to crush the tiny baby.
“But with the way she eats, I doubt that’ll stay the case,” Navi laughed. “She’s wearing me out! Now I know how your cows feel.”
Link turned red as he stepped into the house. He tried really hard not to equate breasts and udders, but Navi and Zelda liked to tease him. “Yeah, well… er… sure,” he stammared.
That just made Navi laugh. “C’mon in. Do you want anything to drink before you hold your niece?” She wondered if Link would freak out if he knew that she’d been planning on naming the baby Link if it had been a boy.
He followed close behind. He hadn’t spent much time around babies, so this was all pretty exciting. “No, I’m good,” he said, not wanted to waste anymore time.
“Okay. Hold your hands like this. You’ve just got to be sure to keep her head supported - she doesn’t have strong neck muscles.” She leaned over to put the baby into his arms, grinning.
Immediately, almost comically, Link wondered if he had made a huge miscalculation. He'd never held a baby before. He was suddenly very scared of dropping her, and his white face showed it.
“It’s okay, I’m right here,” Navi beamed. “If she starts to wiggle, I’ll take her back.” But the baby Zelda was sleeping for once.
Link looked around for a chair, because he assumed that sitting would be more stable than standing. “I’ve actually never held one before. She feels a little like a warm beanbag,” he said with a light chuckle.
“She pretty much is one right now.” Navi grinned fondly at Link, pleased that he was doing so well with holding the baby. “She likes you.”
“Yeah?” Link didn’t know how Navi could tell, but at least he had found a chair. He carefully lowered himself into it. He was still afraid to move any part of his body other than his legs. “Sheesh, I can’t believe how tiny she is…” he murmured.
“She felt huge when she was coming out,” Navi laughed. “Then, as soon as that was done, she seemed tiny again.” Remembering how happy she and Pete had looked was one of Navi’s fondest memories.
Link was quiet for a little bit, with his smile fixed on his face. The silence wasn’t unusual. His thoughts were on the baby’s namesake, as he wondered if an experience like this lay in his own future. In their future. “Zelda’s been here, right?” he asked. “The big Zelda. Er, adult.”
“Yup. She held her too.” Navi smiled, getting comfortable and pulling her robe tighter around her chest. “She was adorable.”
He turned a little bit pink again. “Yeah, some lady handed her baby to her at Disney, for a photograph. It was pretty cute.”
“Oooooh, you wanna have babies with Zelda someday.” Navi couldn’t help teasing her best friend a little. “You’ll make cute ones. Maybe ours can be friends!”
The pink in his cheeks went to red. The heat coursing through his body was enough to make the baby stir. He chuckled awkwardly, totally unsure of what to say. “Maybe…” He did think Zelda would look cute with the belly, but he wasn’t exactly ready to suggest they get started.
“Maybe when you guys get married first.” Navi laughed. “Have you thought about asking her someday?”
He looked up and nodded. “I mean, I have no idea how or when, but I’d like to. I worry about where we’ll live, though.” Her Hollywood world didn’t exactly gel with life on a farm.
“You could talk with her about it. Maybe she’ll like the farm.” Navi smiled. “Or you could always grow things in her backyard. It’s HUGE.” Navi gestured with her arms instead of the volume of her voice.
He nodded. The smile had not faded, but the topic was a concern of his, more than he tended to let on. He couldn't imagine leaving his farm. Ever. And Zelda would have to give up a lot of comfort to live with him. "Well, there's no rush, I guess, to decide anything."
“Nope. You could ask her to move in with you first.” Navi couldn’t help but grin impishly.
He tilted his head a bit. A trial run? Or at least some preliminary time to work out the kinks. It wasn’t a bad idea. “I haven’t shared a house with anyone in a long time,” he said. Huck had spent so much time on his own that it felt like he’d never really been there.
“Well, that way you can figure out each other’s habits and stuff. It just makes the most sense.” Navi smiled, stretching her legs out a little bit. “Pete and I did that before we got married. It seemed like we rushed to a lot of people, and maybe we did to them, but we knew it was time.”
Link had sort of forgotten, but Navi was right. It did seem like meeting and marrying and having a baby with Pete had happened really fast. Maybe he and Zelda had waited long enough before taking some kind of next step. “Okay. I’ll ask her about it.”
Kissing the top of Baby Zelda’s head, Navi let her wings flutter. “Other than that, how are you doing, Uncle?” She couldn’t help looking tired, but utterly pleased.
“The farm is good. Business with the sparkling milk is good.” Link wasn’t one for nuance. When things were good, they were good. The sun shined had lately been shining on him. “Epona really thinks she’s a dog. Or a person. She’s my kid at the moment.” Little joke.
Navi giggled. “Hee, kid,” she laughed. “How’s your giiiiirlfriend? Good things there too?” She was pleased that things were going well for one of her favorite people.
Link chuckled, mirroring Navi’s giggle. “My girlfriend is a celebrity,” he said, with a some disbelief. “How’s Pete?”
“She is, she’s really awesome, isn’t she?” Navi was so proud of the Big Zelda that sometimes she felt like she could burst. But Pete was one of her favorite topics, and Navi’s blue eyes went soft. “He’s such a good dad, Link. He’s the first one to change her diaper, he sits with her and does everything with her while I nap, and oh, sometimes when she fusses he’s the only one who can quiet her down. But I’m lucky, she doesn’t fuss much at all.”
The tiny baby certainly had been politely quiet throughout their conversation thus far. What Link knew about Pete was that he seemed to have his hand on the wheel at all times, so hearing he was so helpful wasn’t a surprise. And to see Navi’s heart become so visible was nice, too. “Still think you’ll have more?”
“Oh, yeah. I’m starting to get more sleep, and I’m healing up really well, so I think the idea of having another one is starting to seem more feasible.” Navi chuckled sheepishly.
“Cos you seemed like you were changing your mind toward the end, there.” Link laughed a little louder. “Hopefully you didn’t scare Zelda off with some of those posts.”
“She wants them with you,” Navi reassured. “She told me so.”
“...She told you?” Link’s eyes went very wide. For the first time, little baby Zelda attempted to wriggle out of his grasp--though he managed to hold onto her.
“A while ago.” Navi was sitting Indian style on her chair, and she nodded at Link. “Want me to hold her? When she’s wiggle worming, I think it means she’s hungry.”
Link looked ahead with a somewhat blank expression. That meant he brain was working overtime, even if it looked otherwise. He handed the baby back to her mom and continued to glaze over with eyes locked on the wall.
“Are you okay?” Navi blinked, taking the baby back and moving her shirt a little so she could feed her.
He blinked, bringing some life back into his eyes. Truthfully, he’d journeyed far away, all the way back home to his farmhouse… at some point in the not-too-distant future… where the woman holding the baby still had blonde hair, but lacked wings. And blushed when Link called her princess.
“Oh, um, yeah,” he said. “I’m good. My mind just wandered for a moment.”
