Zelda was carrying two huge armfuls of diapers, wipes, clothes, blankets, stuffed animals… it was ridiculous. She’d gone shopping, again, and was absolutely thrilled to come and visit now that the baby was here. Someone told someone, who told someone, who finally got word to Zelda that Navi’s baby had been born. A couple of days later, and Zelda came, beaming, to visit.
She knocked very gently on the door, not wanting to wake anyone should they be sleeping.
The baby was asleep, but Navi wasn’t. She padded to the door and opened it, grinning when she saw it was her friend. Or she thought it was her friend; there was a lot of stuff in the way. “Zellie?”
“Navi!” Zelda responded, barely containing the squeal of delight that was threatening to come through. “Eeee!” She dropped half the things as she reached forward to give her friend the biggest hug ever hugged.
“Eeee!” Navi laughed, hugging Zelda, glad she had been able to show up. “I’m glad you’re here! Come on in, come meet Zelda Katherine!”
“I can’t wait, I can’t wait, I can’t wait!” Zelda was bouncing as she released Navi from the hug and moved to follow her into the home. “I can’t believe… Zelda Katherine.” Tears sprung to her eyes and she blinked at them, unable to stop one from rolling down her cheek. “...I’m honored.”
Navi hugged Zelda tight, laughing a little to herself. “If it had been a boy, I was gonna name it Link. C’mon in, she’s sleeping.” Navi walked toward the bassinet, leaning down to pick up the tiny bundle swaddled in a pink blanket.
Zelda laughed softly. “He would have been a handsome little guy. As is I’m sure she’s the most beautiful baby in the whole world.” She followed her friend, then dropped everything to the floor of the nursery. “Oh my God.” She said, moving closer, almost reverently. “Hello, little Zelda.”
Navi smiled, nodding at the big Zelda’s arms. “Do you want to hold her? She’s got her wings tucked away because she’s sleeping.”
Zelda looked both honored and terrified. “...really? Should I… be sitting down? Or something?” God, what would happen if she dropped her little namesake??
“You can if you want to, it’s honestly not that hard.” Navi chuckled a little to herself. “Sit right here.” She nodded at a table in the kitchen.
Zelda moved to the table and took a seat. She held both arms out, but felt nervous. "I've never held a baby this small before."
“Oh, you just have to make sure to support her neck and head. That’s really it.” Navi smiled and moved the baby Zelda over, biting her lip when the baby yawned.
Big Zelda accepted the little Zelda into her arms, holding the baby very, very carefully. She found it didn’t really come naturally, but she wanted to do her best. She wanted to be the best Auntie Zellie in the whole world!! “Oh, gosh, Navi, she’s amazing!” Big!Zelda whispered, looking down into the sleeping baby’s face. She gave a tiny giggle at the sight of the yawn. “Lookit her little nose!”
“She’s got her father’s nose,” Navi beamed. She was very proud of that. “And our eyes, and his hair, and my wings, and ... yeah, she’s pretty amazing.” Navi wasn’t going to deny that her kid was the most awesome kid in the whole wide world.
“Wings!” Zelda was very impressed. “She’s just… absolutely perfect. She’s the most amazing, perfect baby that ever was.” She said, then leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss against Little Zelda’s forehead. “I love her already.”
“Well, good. I’m sure Pete will say it’s okay, but I’d like you to be her godmother.” Navi smiled down at both of her Zeldas, feeling utterly fond and completely lucky.
Big Zelda’s heart was thundering. She blinked up at Navi, and had tears in her eyes. “Really?? I would love to.” She wanted to hug her friend, but didn’t have an arm free. She was focused completely on not dropping the tiny baby.
Navi beamed. “Pete gets to pick the other godparent, but I know I want you to be one.” She sat down by the Zeldas, wrapping an arm around the elder. “I’m just glad you want to!”
Zelda leaned in against Navi. She was unable to hug back, as she was holding Little Zelda, but the sentiment was there. She grinned brightly. “Of course I want to! I have no idea what it all entails, but I’m going to be the best Godparent ever! Like the Fairy in Cinderella!”
“Basically, if Pete and I both die in some sort of tragic accident, you get to be there for her. But since that’s unlikely, you get to be the awesomest relative. Just like the fairy in Cinderella. But hopefully she won’t have any evil step-parents or siblings.” Navi kissed her baby’s cheek, smiling when the infant’s mouth looked confused.
“I doubt she’ll ever have any evil anything.” Zelda said, staring down at the baby. Holding Little Zelda like this was making things stir inside Zelda she’d never felt before. Like, maybe she wanted one. One of these little things. “...she’s just…” but then she smelled it. Zelda dipped her head down a little and caught a whiff of something absolutely disgusting. Her face crinkled up. “Oh, God, here, take her back.”
That made Navi laugh. “You’re welcome. I’ll go change her in her room, you wash up and do whatever barfing you need to do.” Navi grinned, taking the baby to her changing table and taking care of the dirty diaper near expertly. She’d gotten the hang of it quickly.
Zelda was holding her breath as she nodded. She passed the baby over, then moved to the bathroom to wash her hands. She thought maybe she should have done it before holding the newborn, but alas. Then she came back out. “So… can I do chores? Dishes? Vacuum? Anything? Google tells me I’m supposed to offer that sort of help to new parents.”
“If you want to. But honestly, Pete’s being amazing and sort of trying to do it all. He’s really good with it. You must be tired yourself, you did all your movie stuff, right?” Navi couldn’t help but worry about everyone.
“Well, we’re still filming. Started in mid-August, and it’s a twelve week shooting schedule, so we’re in the thick of things,” Zelda explained. “I’m not that tired, really. I had a Red Bull, so I’m okay.” She gave a little smile. “I want to help you. You must not be getting much sleep. Pete, too.”
“Oh, gosh. Red Bulls to keep you awake? You’re probably as tired as me! If you really want to do something, I’m sure there’s dishes and stuff.” But Navi usually just put on a snuggi and made do until Pete yelled at her.
“You just put the baby down, sit on a chair, and keep me company while I clean your kitchen.” Zelda said, giving her friend a bright grin. Then she turned into the kitchen and started poking about for dish soap and whatnot. “How is it? I mean, I know it’s amazing, right?”
“I can do that.” Navi put the baby back into the bassinet and melted into a chair. “It is it really is, but oh gosh, I never thought I’d want to sleep so much.” Navi laughed, wrinkling her nose. “If I wasn’t a fairy, I don’t know how tired I’d be.”
Zelda chuckled. “I’m sure I’d be exhausted. Not sure I could do what you’re doing. It’s amazing.” She started to wash dishes in the sink, putting them into the drying rack. “I can watch over her, if you want to take a nap.”
“That’d be nice, actually. There’s bottles of formula in the fridge, just warm one in a pot of boiling water if you want to feed her - test it on your wrist - or you can wake me up.” Navi yawned expansively, barely making it to the couch before sacking out.
Zelda finished cleaning the kitchen, and was there to pick up baby Zelda from her nap, and even figured out how to warm the bottle on the stove. Maybe this mommy business wasn't so hard after all.
