Izzy smiled as she turned at the sound of somebody entering the bakery which turned into a grin when she saw it was Michael. A new musician Audrey had invited to play in their newly set up stage as well as work with them as their newest colleague. Izzy liked him, he was fun and kind and she was able to flirt with him without him taking it too seriously, which was kind of refreshing.
“Hey” she waved at him, “Perfectly timed as always” she teased before offering, “Drink?”
Michael grinned when he saw it was Izzy working the counter when he came in to play. She was definitely one of his favorite coworkers at the Bakery whether he was behind the counter for his shift or just in there because. She was fun to joke around with and didn’t take anything he said too seriously.
He made his way over to the counter where she was and glanced at his watch. “Oh well I got to get here early to talk with you Izzy. Always puts me in the right frame of mind. So much easier to play when I’ve gotten the chance to talk to a pretty girl beforehand,” he told her with a wink. “I’ll have my normal sparkling latte,” he told her leaning against the counter a little bit. “Those things are just addicting.”
“Oh Michael, are you saying I’m inspiration” she fluttered her eyelashes at him, “You know how to make a girls day don’t you” she added as she turned to make up his latte, knowing how he liked it. That was all part of Audrey’s training, everybody who worked there knew everybody elses order. Made learning the ropes just that bit more interesting. “It’s the drug I put in it really” she teased him.
“And here I was worried you wouldn’t understand,” Michael told her with a teasing grin. “I know how to try at least and that can be almost as fun with the right person.” He and Izzy had only worked a couple shifts together but they’d gotten along pretty much from the beginning and she knew exactly how he liked his latte a trick of hers he hadn’t quite figured out yet. He knew it had something to do with Audrey’s training but they must not have gotten there in his training yet. “I knew there was something missing whenever I made my own. It never tasted quite the same,” he told her laughing quietly at her teasing.
"Well I think trying is appreciated by most women and as you say made more fun with the right one" she said grinning over her shoulder. Izzy was a fast learner so it was probably half training and half instinct. "It's all part of my plan, a love potion I got off a witch on the net" she laughed as she placed the latte in front of him. "So how longs your set tonight?" she asked, taking advantage of the quiet while it lasted.
“A for effort right?” he asked. “You mind telling me the rest of this plan or should I be surprised?” he teased her as he took a sip of his drink. “On second thought, let me be surprised,” he said as he took another sip of the delicious drink. “Hour. Hour and a half if I want to draw it out and the crowd’s for it,” he told her, taking a look around the bakery. There was a good size crowd that night which was good even if it was a little nervewracking but he knew the nerves would pass once he got started like they always did. “You gonna be here for the whole thing or you off early tonight?” he asked as he looked back towards her. Shane and Claire had both told him they weren’t sure they’d be able to make it for the whole thing and he was hoping that Izzy would be there for the whole thing. A friendly face and all that.
“Definitely an A for effort” she told him with a grin, “Always better when I remain a surprise” she teased back. She looked around the bakery, there was definitely a larger crowd than normal. Looks like word was getting around about Audrey supporting new performers. “Pretty sure the crowd’s gonna be for it” she told him encouragingly, “And my shift ends in about ten minutes but I’m planning on sticking around. Got my front row seat saved and everything” she told him with a smile, “No way I’m missing out. I wanna be able to tell people how I knew you before fame and fortune came and took you away”
“I hope so,” he told her, letting her get a little glimpse of the nerves he dealt with before every show. He loved performing, loved just playing his guitar whether he had an audience or not, music was his passion, pure and simple. “Aw come on Izzy. I could never let fame and fortune take me away from you. Who would I use for my inspiration then?” he asked her with another teasing grin. “I’m glad you’re gonna be here Izzy. I could use a friendly face out there,” he told her getting serious for just a minute.
“It’s a definite” she assured him, knowing she wouldn’t be able to handle the nerves he seemed to be able to overcome when he performed. But she’d heard him before and it was clear he had talent and not just because she was biased in favor of her friend. “Ah this is true, still it’s still a great story to be able to tell people” she teased before placing her hand over his giving it a friendly squeeze, “They don’t get much friendlier than mine” she told him lightly, with a smile, “You can rely on me”
“Thanks Izzy. You’ve been a good friend. And I appreciate it, you know that right?” he asked her. “And I’ve got a new song tonight that I think you’re going to love,” he told her with an easy smile.
“Of course, and that works both ways you know” she told him, “I’m glad you braved the den of women to come work here” Her eyes sparkled as she grinned, “Then I can’t wait to hear it”
Michael laughed quietly at her comment about the den of women. “Took a lot of guts to come be the only guy working in the middle of a bunch of beautiful women,” he said once he quit laughing, as he took a long sip of his drink. “I’ve been meaning to tell you - thanks for not giving me a lot of shit about breaking up with Eve.”
Izzy laughed too before giving him a slightly sad kind of smile, “I know it wasn’t easy for you. I mean break up’s are never easy but you guys had been friends before too so I know it was hard. You doing okay?” she asked.
“Some days are better than others. Easier. Eve moved the last of her stuff into one of the other bedrooms today. I don’t know if she’s going to keep staying at the house or move out. She was my roommate in Texas before we started dating and we were friends forever too it’s just hard sometimes. Seeing her day in and day out, but I still think it was the right thing for both of us. We were just making each other miserable,” he told her, looking down at the counter.
Izzy placed a hand over his, “You’ll work it out. You both still care for each other. You’ll find your way back to that friendship somehow. It might just take time”
Michael looked back up at her with a sort of strained smile. “I hope so. But I know her too well to try and force it. So I just have to wait. Sorry Izzy, I didn’t mean to come in early and put all this on you.”
“Don’t be silly” Izzy said patting his hand, “That’s what friends are for right? Besides you’re going to sing to me in a bit so I really don’t mind” she smiled.
Michael smiled back at her and leaned across the counter to give her a one-armed hug. “That’s exactly what friends are for. And if I’m going to sing to you in a bit, I should go warm up a bit with the guitar. That way I’m ready at show time,” he picked up his drink and took it with him as he walked towards the stage, giving Izzy one last smile before opening his case and sitting down to start his warmups, losing himself in the familiar feel of the guitar strings under his fingertips.
Izzy returned the hug before nodding, “Go warm up that guitar of yours” she shooed him with a smile looking forward to her shift ending so she could take her seat and listen.
