To say that Jeremy was acting out was the understatement of the year. Sure, he'd been kind of rebellious before his parents had died, but now it was even worse. At least before he'd never been escorted out of an amusement park for stealing. He wasn't even really sure why he'd done it, but he'd wanted to see if he could get away with it. He knew that pretty much everyone was disappointed with him, but it was hard to really care when there wasn't much he really cared about at the moment. He just knew that he'd hated seeing those looks from Myrcella and Stiles, but he couldn't help it. Now, he was up in his room after arriving home. He knew he wouldn't be able to avoid his aunt and uncle for long, before one or both of them tried to talk to him, but that didn't mean he had to wait around downstairs for it. When Jenna answered the phone and someone was asking if she was Jeremy Gilbert’s guardian...panic mode set in. Her heart had been hammering in her chest, at least until she found out that Jeremy was okay. That he was in trouble. To say that Jenna wasn’t happy about being pulled from home to come pick Jeremy up was an understatement. The car ride had been relatively quiet. Jenna didn’t want to say anything that she would regret out of anger. Once they were home though she intended to speak to him. Jeremy went right up there so she took a few minutes to fill Ric in on what had happened before making her way upstairs. Jenna knocked on Jeremy’s door and waited a moment before opening the door. “We need to talk about this, Jeremy,” she told him, leaning in the doorway. “What is there to say besides you’re disappointed in me and that I’m grounded?” Not that Jeremy actually planned on sticking around even if Jenna did ground him. He’d snuck out enough times and never gotten caught by his parents, so he highly doubted he would get caught by his aunt and uncle. Besides, they had their own kid to worry about, “That is what you were going to say, right?” He asked, looking up at Jenna from where he sat on his bed, back against the headboard. He hadn’t been upstairs long enough to do anything like start a video game and instead had been sitting there, staring at his phone and contemplating texting Stiles and Myrcella. He honestly didn’t blame his friends if they were disappointed in him, but he really hoped that this didn’t make Myrcella think any less of him. If only Jenna could read his thoughts. If she knew that his biggest concern was if some girl thought less of him...she would want to try and shake some kind of sense into him. Shouldn’t he be worried what his family thought of him? What doing something like that might do to his reputation? But instead he was worried about what Myrcella thought. And his friends. “You bet your ass you are,” Jenna confirmed, taking a seat on the edge of Jeremy’s bed. She was torn somewhere between yelling at him and still trying to be gentle with him. It was a tough time for everyone and it was obvious it was taking a very big toll on Jeremy. “How about...what were you thinking?” Jenna asked, staring over at him. She knew his parents taught him better than that. She knew they raised him not to be a thief. It was obvious that Jeremy’s priorities were completely backwards, but ever since he’d walked in and found his parents murdered, he hadn’t been thinking straight. He’d picked fights with Elena for no reason and hardly spoke to Katherine, but part of the was because she was so different from Elena. She didn’t keep asking if he was alright like everyone else. If he wasn’t being so difficult, he knew that he could talk to Elena or Jenna or anyone else in his family about what was going on, but for one reason or another, he felt that the only people he could talk to were Stiles or Myrcella. Or even Matt now that he was back. As Jenna sat down on the edge of his bed, he glanced over at her, pulling his knees up to his chest and stared down at his feet, “I don’t know.” He didn’t know why he’d done it. Part of him had just wanted to see if he could get away with it, but he hadn’t realized that one of the employees of the gift shop had been watching him, Stiles and Myrcella. ”You’re going to have to do better than that, Jeremy Gilbert.” She understood lashing out, she understood acting out but there was innocent rebellion and then there was rebellion that could have had serious consequences. Jenna was no angel growing up and both her nieces and her nephew knew that. She wouldn’t try and pretend she wasn’t. In fact she even believed a little rebellion was healthy. Certainly not something that could get him arrested though. And she didn’t have to be a psych major (even though she was!) to know what this behavior was stemming from. That didn’t mean it was something that she could look the other way about, though. “What else do you want me to say? I wanted to see if I could get away with it. Is that better?” Jeremy really didn’t want to do this now. He just wanted to crawl under his blankets and stay there for the rest of the weekend. Maybe text Myrcella and Stiles later, but all in all, he didn’t want to be having this conversation. “Just tell me I’m grounded and get it over with.” Jenna was fairly certain he was going to be angry with her for her suggestion but that didn’t matter. Right now he would be angry at just about anything, anyway. “I think you might need to talk to someone, Jeremy.” A situation like this wasn’t easy. There wasn’t a clear cut design for grieving. Everyone grieved in their own means. She did know that talking about things helped. And if he wasn’t going to talk to her or his siblings, then they should go about getting him someone to talk to. A professional that wouldn’t be distracted by the ways a person could manipulate the conversation with a friend or family member. At Jenna’s suggestion, Jeremy looked up at his aunt, brows furrowing. Myrcella had suggested the same thing while they had been in the office, waiting for the park manager, but somehow it was different coming from her than it was coming from his aunt. “Just gonna pass me off on some shrink now?” He didn’t know why it felt so much worse to hear it from Jenna. It’d be the same if Elena, Katherine or Ric suggested it too. “That’s your way to handle this? Did anyone else suggest you should see the quake when you were my age? I bet they didn’t.” "Pass you off? Do you hear yourself?" she asked, a harsh edge to her words. Jenna was slightly hurt by his words. Deep down she knew or at least hoped that he didn't mean that. That it was his anger talking. It didn't really matter if Jeremy wanted to talk to someone. If Jenna and Ric decided that was what Jeremy needed, he would be going. Honestly, it would be her suggestion to any of her students if they had gone through a situation like her nephew. "We're talking about you Jeremy and if Ric and I think its what is best for you then that is what is going to happen," she informed him, standing up from where she was perched. There was a glass of wine and a spot next to her husband calling her name. ”Then I guess there’s no point in having this conversation if you’ve already made up your mind.” Just because Jenna was suggesting it didn’t mean Jeremy had to go. It wouldn’t be the first time he’d ditched going to something he was supposed to. He’d done it before when it parents were alive, so why should he stop now? ”I guess not. But we will have plenty of time to discuss that while you’re grounded. Good night, Jeremy,” Jenna said before moving to exit his room. They would have plenty of time to discuss this tomorrow. Once they both had a chance to get some sleep. |
