Elizabeth pushed open the front door with a heavy sigh. It had been a long day at work what with dealing with the paperwork of the department head’s leaving so suddenly and dropping her in the proverbial pile of crap. She pushed the door closed behind her and trod heavily to flop down on the other end of the couch next to Sam, leaning her head back on the back of it as she tried to relax. “Ugh...hi…” she grumbled.
“Hey” Sam said looking up from the magazine she’d been reading, “Oh dear, tough day?” she asked in concern. She knew something had been bothering her friend but she didn’t pry, Lizzie would tell her when she was ready.
“Tough week,” Elizabeth sighed heavily, sinking further into the cushions of the couch. “The department head left so much unfinished paperwork, he had no organisational sense, the freshmen are not half as promising as last year’s and I haven’t managed to pin Leonard down to talk about…” she caught herself from simply tactlessly blurting it out and cast a sideways look at her. “Sorry,” she closed her eyes again, feeling a headache forming behind her eyes which reminded her that she hadn’t had anything but a cup of coffee all day.
“Are you really surprised? He was a total scatterbrain, I’m surprised it took them this long to get you to take over” Sam commented before frowning as she looked at her friend, “Talk about what?” she asked, “No need to apologise. You know I’m here for you Lizzie”
“I…” Elizabeth sighed and looked over at her friend. She sat herself up straighter in her seat and turned to face Sam, looking down at her fingers as she fidgeted. “Alright, I uh...I’ve got something I need to tell you, I…” she stopped, the words sticking in her throat as she tried to tell her friend about her mistake. “I had a...problem the last couple of weeks that...I’ve never experienced before,” she told her quietly.
“Okay” Sam replied slowly, “Umm what exactly was your ‘problem’? I’m struggling to think of anything here, you’ve dealt with so much in your time”
“Oh wow, thanks for making me feel ancient!” Elizabeth gasped, pretending to be affronted..
Sam rolled her eyes, “Oh you know what I mean” she said smiling, “You worked for the UN for crying out loud, you’ve seen everything”
“Oo, that’s new,” Elizabeth teased, referring to her apparently new phrase. “Well, I thought I’d seen everything,” she laughed bitterly. “Turns out there are still things I’ve yet to experience.”
“Will you just tell me?” Sam asked with a slight frown, Lizzie was usually much more direct than this, whereas she seemed to be going round the houses to avoid telling Sam what had been causing her so much stress.
"I..." Elizabeth took a breath. "Leonard and I...we...I...thought I might have been...pregnant," she admitted quietly, wincing as she said it, feeling like she was about to receive a telling off from her mother.
“Elizabeth Anne Weir” Samantha said eyes widening, “Of all the people I know you are the last I would ever have worried about regarding that! No wonder you’ve been so distracted”
Elizabeth groaned hid her face in the back of the couch with an arm over her head. "I know! I know! It was stupid!" she told her mournfully. "We were talking, deep and meaningful and then...one thing led to another and..." she shrugged.
“Well, the good doctor must be quite the stud to have you lose your head to that extent” Sam teased a little, “But I hope that’s been a lesson to you. Both of you”
Elizabeth bit her lip coyly and looked over at Sam. "He most definitely is a stud," she told her smugly, feeling a blush colour her cheeks as she thought about being with him. "I uh...I don't know, we're going to talk it through, but I think he really wants it to be serious," she grinned happily. "He said he wants me to meet his daughter, which is huge," Elizabeth told her, feeling a little apprehensive of the idea. What if Joanna didn't like her? Would his daughter's dislike of her break them up?
Sam laughed, happy for her friend even if she had been a bit of an idiot. “Do you want children Lizzie?” she asked, they’d never really spoken about it before but it seemed implied that she wouldn’t mind. “I’m sure she’ll love you” Sam assured her.
“I don’t know to be honest,” she admitted with a little shrug. “I...I was terrified at the possibility,” she shook her head. “But when that test came back negative, I was...disappointed as well as relieved and I wasn’t expecting that,” she explained. “Let’s face it, I’m not exactly a spring chicken anymore and I love Leonard,” Elizabeth paused for a second, surprised at herself. “Wow, probably should have told him that first, shouldn’t I?”
“I think he’ll forgive you after everything that’s happened lately” Sam assured her, surprised by her friend. “For what it’s worth I think you’d be a great mother” she added with a smile.
“I...thanks Sam, but let’s not kid ourselves,” Elizabeth laughed. “I work too much, I can barely look after myself most of the time and let’s face it, in the last twelve months I’ve been in hospital three times,” she listed. “None of which give me a great start at being a parent,” she admitted a little sadly. “I don’t want to make any snap decisions right now, it’s been pretty crazy lately; new stuff with work, not knowing if I’m pregnant and who knows whether Leonard and I are even on the same page,” she reasoned, fiddling with the hem of her skirt. She wanted this relationship to work more than anything right now and she didn’t want to jeopardise that in any way. If she were honest she still wasn’t completely sure if she wanted it or not, if she could fit a baby into her busy life.
“None of that would stop you being a good mother” Sam told her, “I know you Lizzie, you’d put 100% into it and that little baby would receive so much love from you. You’d work it out, if it is what you wanted” Of that Sam was sure.
Elizabeth smiled at that, “You know me too well, Sam.” She was right, if Elizabeth decided to do it, she would do it to the best of her ability. “Anyway, who knows if it’ll happen, I need to pin Leonard down and talk it through with him some more,” she shook her head. “What about you? Have you met anyone lately?”
“Yeah talking to him might be a good idea” she said with a nod, “Me? Oh no, I’ve not met anybody really. Been busy with lesson planning and such”
Elizabeth nodded understandingly, if she hadn’t had her scare then she’d probably be in the same boat. “I know we haven’t talked about it much but...are you ok? After Gold, I mean,” Elizabeth asked carefully.
“I’m fine, I mean it’s not like we were that serious or anything” Sam tried to brush it off casually, it obviously hadn’t been that serious for him anyway the way he’d just left without a word. “Besides I’ve got a lot on with school starting back and everything”
“You can’t bury yourself in work Sam,” Elizabeth told her gently. “You and I both know it’s only a temporary measure. I’m not saying you need to be with someone, but it was great to see you so happy when you were with Gold. Just tell me you’ll consider it?”
“I’m not burying myself Lizzie, I’m just busy” Sam replied, “Besides how am I going to meet anybody, I’m not exactly the sort who has a busy social calendar. Gold was kind of a fluke for me”
“Well maybe I’ll drag you along as my plus one to the next party I’m invited to,” Elizabeth teased with a grin, despite being deadly serious about it.
“Oh now hold on a minute, I’m happy not being social. I’m bad at social. I can’t talk to people like you can. Besides I wouldn’t want to upset Leonard by stealing your company for an evening out”
“I think Leonard’s secure enough with our relationship that he knows I’m not going to go running off with my best friend of over fifteen years,” Elizabeth joked with a wink. “And you can absolutely do social, you just don’t give yourself enough credit,” she told her.
That made Sam laugh, “Who knows, maybe I’ll rock your world and steal you away” she tried to say it with a straight face but failed miserably. “Well I don’t like it. It’s too much like hard work” she said wrinkling her nose.
“Oh my god, Samantha Carter, did you just make a joke about sex?” Elizabeth asked, dramatically shocked. “And you love hard work,” she winked.
She slapped Elizabeth with her hand, “Oh shut up” she said but the smile remained on her face, “I love hard work where numbers are involved not social interaction”
“There are numbers involved…” Elizabeth pretended to contemplate them. “First date, second date, third date...first time, multiple times,” she winked.
Samantha rolled her eyes, “Oh my god, you’re terrible” she said, “I obviously need to find you another single friend so you can railroad them instead” she joked.
Elizabeth laughed heartily at that and fell back against the couch, an arm over her stomach. “Why would you want to do that? When it’s so much fun riling each other,” she joked, casting a grin over in Sam’s direction.
Sam couldn't help but smile at her friend over that. "Fun, right. That's what that is" she teased.
“I can’t help it, admit it, you’re an easy mark sometimes,” Elizabeth rolled her head to look at her. It was good to laugh like this with her again, it had been too long.
“Fine. Yes I’m an easy mark sometimes” she admitted, “Which, as my best friend, you really shouldn’t be taking advantage of so much” she added with a raised eyebrow and a smile.
"Call it 'special priviledges'," Elizabeth grinned. Turns out today wasn't so bad after all.
