Illyana was annoyed, but at the same time, she felt somewhat… better. Her powers had been robbed from her by the arrival of a glowing golden rock and she had found herself feeling more cheerful, lighter on her feet, and still able to wield her sword with deadly enthusiasm.
It was an odd day, but she was definitely happy as she wandered the house in just a robe, waiting for Clarice to come home from work.
It had taken longer than usual. Clarice had had to take the bus. Her powers had been virtually nonexistant, and even her eyes had lost much of their glow. Her skin was unchanged, which may have been good, or bad, depending on how she looked at it. She came inside. “Yana?”
“Clarice!” Illyana glanced up, then hopped up and went to her fiance. She enfolded Clarice in a huge hug.It lasted long enough for Illyana to feel warm again and she kissed her, hard and passionately. “I love you. This place is annoying.” She smiled at Clarice, feeling warm now that she was home.
“Mmph…” Clarice mumbled, wrapping her arms around her. “More weird stuff. I saw Kitty’s post. Is she really running around with a tinfoil hat?” She rubbed her hands down Illyana’s arms, then leaned in and kissed her again. When she kissed her fiance, she felt like the world fell away and there was nothing else that mattered.
“Yes, she is, rather.” Illyana kissed Clarice back. “And my powers are gone. All of them. Only the sword remains.” She figured it was part of her so much that even losing her power wouldn’t take it away. “I got a cab home, and then remembered I had forgotten to go to the store.” She chuckled. “This is too much fun. I am beginning to feel hostile toward Orange County.”
Clarice stared at her, not sure if she was serious, or even how she actually felt about the idea. More elated than she should be. “Mine too. I can’t port. It’s almost a relief, and I wonder if it’ll last.”
Illyana drug her to the couch and snuggled her close, there. “I know. THe magic leaves a weird hole in my mind and yet… I do not miss it, not really.” She nodded, hugging Clarice close. “Is it bad of me to want it to last? To want this to be the end of this crazy series of adventures? “
“You’re less….” Clarice searched for a word that wasn’t hurtful. “You’re not as...you were starting to scare me. I didn’t know who you were becoming and what that meant for us.”
“I was just becoming me. Never be scared, silly. Sometimes, we have to evolve to become who we are.” She nodded.
“You were starting to remind me of another you I knew once,” Clarice admitted. She trailed her fingers down Illyana’s throat. “It’s not bad, being who you are. Just different. I can adapt. I think I’m finally ready to.” She wasn’t even sure what she meant by all of that, but she was sincere.
Illyana smiled softly, and pulled out a small box. “Then maybe it’s time for this.” She slid to one knee. “Clarice Ferguson,. Will you marry me?” ANd she opened the box, showing off a silver and pink metal ring, the two bands intertwined and sporting a single diamond at the crux of them. “I love you.”
"I..what?" Clarice looked down at Illyana, like she couldn't even believe what she was doing. She'd never expected Illyana to do this. Let along kneel. That made it more touching, and a lot harder to speak.
"God, you're insane, I love you too. Of course!"
Illyana slid the ring onto Clarice’s finger and then rose and kissed the hell out of her, long, slow and passionately. When she was done, she smirked. “I want a fast wedding, and then…” She swallowed. I want to take you and go do theater work and crazy things and leave the OC. as Wife and Wife.”
"You want to leave?" Clarice pulled her head away a little bit. "But...Aren't we needed? They need us. They're practically helpless without us." And she was so, so tired of it.
“They need to get over it. They’ll just have to deal without us. They don’t need teleporters, and they don’t need a sorceress. All we are in the battles are transports and soldiers and I am tired of it. Two worlds and two lives of it and I am done. I want to build a life with you. Period.”
She took her hand and pressed it over her heart, and gazed into the Russian’s eyes. “Okay. You’ve twisted my arm. I’m in.” She was smiling. “The hard part will be telling them. Especially Kitty.”
“I know. But we need to. The X-Men aren’t needed here, not really. and we aren’t X-men here, not really. So we need to make our own life. If anyone will understand that, I am hoping Kitty will;.” She sighed.
“I hope they realize that some day too.” She nodded her head, then kissed Illyana again.
“Why do I have the feeling you guys are having something important happen?” Kitty came down the stairs. She had on a hoodie that was lined with tinfoil in the hood. Keeping thoughts out was hard.
“Because you’re a smartie.” Illyana went to hug Kitty and kiss her on the cheek,. “Kitty we have something to tell you, two somethings, really.” She drew Kitty along toward Clarice. Or tried to.
“Does it have to do with that rock on her finger?” Kitty asked, sounding genuinely elated. She pulled the hoodie closed with draw strings and the buzzing in her head lessoned. She picked up some stray surface thoughts, including a very vivid glimpse of what Illyana had planned for Clarice later. “Guh.”
“It does, yes.” Illyana winked at Kitty and maybe let her mind wander to even more vivid ideas, and more intense ones, and… then forced herself to smile sweetly. “We’re going to get married… soon.” She nodded. “And, ah, there is one other thing.”
Kitty bounced and hugged Illyana, trying to ignore that. She stopped bouncing and squinted. “Yeah…?”
Clarice eyedarted around, and thought about woodchucks.
Illyana smiled softly. “After getting married… we are going to move away from the OC. It’s time for us to stop playing X-Men, and live our lives. I want to go to college, and I want to see Clarice become a prized playwright. We need to not be the teleporter and the witch called on when needed to make things easier, and no other times.”
Kitty’s heart fell. She looked between them, but recovered quickly. How often had she thought about moving to Chicago? Every day. Every damn day. She just couldn’t leave.
“I know. I love you guys, you know that?” Damn, her voice was wavering.
Clarice took Illyana’s hand and squeezed it. “I fought enough in the dreams. I can’t anymore. I just can’t.”
Illyana hugged them both, and smiled softly. “We love you too, silly butt, and you better visit us a lot.” She nodded.
“The old fashioned way,” Clarice added. She grinned.
“The old fashioned way is a nice way,” Kitty agreed. “Let me at least help you find a place, okay? I can front you some rent and I won’t take no for an answer.”
She looked at Illyana. “What about your shop?”
“It turns out that it’s making money and I found some teenagers to help run it when you are busy so you don’t have to. Otherwise, it’s yours.” She nodded. “I’ll take the magic doohickeys with me, and find a way to deactivate or destroy them, just in case. The rest is just memories. Good ones, but just memories.”
She smiled softly at both of them. “How fast can we put together a wedding?”
A big lonely house and a shop, both full of memories. Kitty only had to force her smile a little bit. “Obviously Vegas is out of the question. But we can use the back yard. Just need to find someone to officiate.”
Illyana grinned. “Kirk or Thor?” She nodded. “One of them?”
“Thor,” Clarice said, before Illyana had even finished speaking. It could be no one else, not for her. The man had probably saved her life, and he never really knew it.
Illyana smiled at them both and nodded. “Thor it is. He’s a nice guy.” She grinned a bit, having had internal knowledge of that man. “So, then, when?”
“How about give it a few days so you can make your travel arrangements,” Kitty suggested. She mostly just wanted to keep them a little longer. As long as she could.
Clarice nodded. She was … reluctant to leave, too, but knew it was the right thing to do.
"One week, no more. No tempting fate." Illyana nodded. It was time.
“I’ll get the arrangements made,” Kitty promised. She couldn’t get anything super spectacular, but at the very least, there would be cake.
“Thank you.” Illyana hugged Kitty and kissed her nose, then kissed Clarice again. “This is going to rock!” She didn’t care about fancy or amazing. She just wanted to marry the woman she loved.
