Jane had managed to drag herself out of bed this morning. Just. Considering how bad she felt compared to yesterday, she couldn’t help but wonder if this was what insanity was, but she was determined not to miss a class of Professor Carter’s. Was it hot out here today? Jane felt like she was sweating, but she couldn’t be, the weather hadn’t looked that hot on the news this morning.
Maia was out for a jog. Or more or less looking at her phone while she was trying to get pictures of Isabela’s cats flying. And then Pam was ill so she needed to make a stop and bring her things and OOF she just ran into someone.
Jane’s phone popped out of her hands and dropped on the floor. The impact made her feel dizzy and she grabbed onto the person’s arm as she closed her eyes to try and re-focus. “Sorry, sorry, I just...I need a minute,” she apologised, swaying a little.
“Maker, I’m sorry!” Maia steadied herself, then put her arm around the woman. “Are you quite all right? You look like death warmed over.”
"I'll be alright in a minute," Jane tried to reassure her. "Just a bit dizzy," she explained.
“Well, sorry about that.” She helped Jane remain steadied and rubbed her back. What. She was hot.
"That's ok," Jane took a breath and straightened herself up, opening her eyes to look at the woman. "Maia? Well fancy meeting you here," she joked weakly.
Maia took a second to place her, then grinned. “Jane. What a pleasant surprise. What are you doing, taking a walk?” She was a little concerned, but if Jane thought she was okay, she was okay.
“Kinda, I’m heading to class,” Jane offered a weak smile. “Thought the fresh air might help clear my head...no luck so far,” she joked. “You?”
“Out for a jog and worrying about people. Nothing much, really.” She laughed. “There seems to be some oddness about.”
“There always is. Flying cats. I’m still utterly amused by that. I wonder if people getting sick is a part of this.” She tilted her head.
“Why? Are there more people getting sick then?” Jane frowned, trying to bend to reach her phone but nearly falling over on her face as a wave of dizziness washed over her.
“My girlfriend,” Maia said, surprised at how casually she’d said that. Not that she was ashamed, she just wasn’t the monogamous type and it was just weird.
“You have a girlfriend?”Jane asked, surprised and a teensy bit disappointed. She knew she’d kind of freaked out after their last encounter, but it was still nice to be thought of that way, especially after the debacle with Thor. “Who is she? What’s happened to her?”
Maia smiled at her, and nodded her head. “Her name is Pamela, it’s kind of a recent thing. I usually don’t…” She flailed her hands. “Do the bloody one person thing and I know I’ll mess up. I don’t know, but she’s usually healthy as a horse.”
Jane gave a tired chuckle as Maia flailed her arms. “You sound a bit...weirded out by the one person thing,” Jane commented. “How did you two meet?”
“We kind of..” Maia waved a hand. “One night stand sort of thing, that started turning into a long term siege.”
“Siege?” Jane laughed again, which turned into a cough. “Sorry, but...I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a relationship being called a ‘siege’ before,” she smiled. “Everything ok?”
“Oh! Yes. It is. I mean that. I’m just worried…”
Jane smiled and put a hand on her shoulder, "I'm sure she'll be ok. Although I'm beginning to wonder if that meteor shower had something to do with a lot of the stuff going on around here," she admitted grimly. "It's too coincidental all this...craziness happening so soon after."
“Danger from space?” She tilted her head, and then darted her eyes, remembering a couple that had found a baby in a crater in her dreams.
"It's possible," Jane shrugged. "Think of all the crazy stuff that's happened around here in the last year or so," she pointed out.
“Bugger that.” Maia rubbed at her face. “Are you okay? You look really pale.”
"I'll be fine once I get to class and sit down, I'm sure," Jane smiled at her. "Thanks, I didn't mean to interrupt your morning jog," she apologised, wavering on her feet a little.
“If you don’t mind me saying, you should be careful. If you start getting sicker you should get help, love.” She put her hand on Jane’s arm.
“I will, thanks,” Jane smiled at her last word. It made her feel a little giddy since no-one in her life at the moment used any phrases like that to describe her. Well, that coupled with the woozy feeling spreading through her mind. “We shouldn’t leave it so long next time,” Jane told her.
“I’d like that. Coffee?” She squeezed Jane in a light hug.
“Definitely,” Jane agreed, returning the hug and enjoying the comfort of tactile contact, then felt her stomach roll at the thought of coffee. “Although maybe not now,” she joked weakly, putting a hand to her stomach. Raising her head to take a deep breath she caught sight of the time. “Crap, I’m going to be late, thanks for staying with me, and sorry again,” she told her, digging into her satchel to pull out a business card to hand over to Maia. “Give me a call and we can see about getting together,” she smiled.
Maia grinned, and put the card down her shirt. That was the one downside to being with someone, she realized - she really, really missed flirting harder with people…
Jane chuckled as she saw Maia put the card down her shirt, arching an eyebrow in amusement at her. “You keep that safe now,” she winked. “I don’t go giving that out to everyone,” she grinned.
Temptation raised it’s ugly head for Maia, but she grinned back. “And don’t go emptying your stomach just anywhere.”
