Jenna was drained. She was mentally, physically and emotionally drained. The last several days were the longest of her life. It amazed her that she even had any tears left in her body from the amount of time she spent crying. It didn't get in the way of her taking care of Annie though. Or taking care of the things she needed to. It was easier though because she had Ric. He was her rock. He kept her anchored when the swell of emotions seemed too much. She knew she was lucky to have Ric. He was being strong enough for the both of them. Even just sitting here on the couch, with his arm around her, made her feel like some of the burden was lifted off of her shoulders. Her left hand reached up, taking his hand and intertwining their fingers. It was hard for her to not only lose her sister, her best friend. But it was so very hard to watch her nieces and nephew and the pain they were going through. Kids shouldn't be burying their parents. Those kids didn't deserve to be put through this. Jenna's heart ached for them all. Jeremy especially. Katherine and Elena weren't staying in the house any longer but Jeremy…he wanted to. He wanted to be surrounded by the presence of his parents. By the memories and reminders. She could understand that. And part of her didn't mind following through with his request for the same reason. But it wasn't a decision she would make without Ric or without him being in agreement. "I need to talk to you about something," Jenna said softly. Ric wasn't really sure what to do. The family he'd stumbled into was hurting and he wasn't really sure how to help. He'd never lost anyone. His parents were getting older, but they were both still around. The only child of only children, he'd never had siblings or cousins to lose. His grandparents, of course, had passed, and it had been sad, but losing elderly grandparents to old age was different than losing a beloved sister and brother-in-law suddenly and violently. He couldn't even imagine what it was like for the girls and Jeremy, losing both their parents in one fell swoop. It was hard for him too. He'd thought the world of Miranda and Grayson Gilbert. They had accepted him into their lives and made him feel like family. But the simple fact of it was that someone had to be strong. And that someone was him. There was nobody else to do it. So he dealt with his own grief in private, and did his best to be there for his wife and their nieces and nephew. The hardest part, for him, had been explaining to Annie that Aunt Miranda and Uncle Grayson were gone and they wouldn't be coming back, but she seemed to be taking it as well as a five year old could. This was one of the quiet moments, just sitting at home with his wife and enjoying some alone time while their daughter slept. He sighed, wrapping his arm around her more tightly, and gave her a small, tired smile as she took his hand in hers. He gave her hand a soft squeeze, knowing what she was going to say before she even spoke. They'd been married long enough that they just understood each other. He knew what she was going to ask, but figured it was better to let the conversation play out. "Of course," he said, tugging her ever so slightly closer. "What's on your mind, Jen?" Right now her whole world felt like it was turned upside down but sitting here with Ric helped with that. His arm around her, tugging her closer. It was comforting and the main reason she wasn’t broken into a million pieces. That was just one of the reasons she loved Ric. That he knew she needed him to be strong without asking, without anything. She loved that they knew each other so well, fit together so well that things didn’t need to be said, to be asked. A smile formed unconsciously as Ric tugged her closer, her body automatically responding and adjusting to fit perfectly against him. “I was talking with Jeremy…” she started, trying to find the words. Jenna was certain that Ric wouldn’t have a problem with this request but it wasn’t something she could give Jeremy an answer to without discussing it with her husband. It was a big request, a big decision that needed to be made by both of them. “He said he wanted to go back to the house, to live there again. I told him that it was something we could discuss,” she finished. Last Reply Added September 2, 2013 JENNA RIC |
