Luthien’s heels clicked on the pavement as she walked, not really paying much attention to where she was going or the kind of neighborhood she was wandering into. Her head was a bit in the clouds and her voice was humming some ancient haunted melody.
Eli was reading on a park bench, danging one leg and the other curled underneath her. When she saw the pretty woman, Eli smiled, knowing that she’d look rather idiosyncratic being so young and out so late at night. Hopefully she wasn’t due to get a lecture.
Spinning around, Luthien rose her voice, the melody growing more upbeat and happy the louder she sang.
Of course, that was when the shady looking guy came up and started wolf whistling at her. Eli sighed. “I suppose I can put my book away,” she muttered to herself in Swedish. Running faster than human eyes could notice, she ran toward the man, picked him up, and deposited him on a rooftop four blocks away before returning to the pretty woman’s side. “Your voice is lovely, but you should be careful.”
She blinked at Eli, then looked around. She’d scaredly noticed anything except a rush of air. “What was that? I thought I heard something and...then I didn’t.”
“A man was following you, but I think I scared him away. Likely trying to steal your purse or something.” Eli shrugged.
“..thank you.” Luthien smiled at her, light eyes studying the girl. Even though it was dark, the elf almost seemed to radiate light.
“You’re welcome.” Eli smiled and offered her hand. “I am Eli. I know I’d like it if more women looked out for each other, so I am paying it forward.”
Luthien’s grip was strong, and regal. “Luthien. Paying it forward is a noble goal. I shall have to pay it forward myself, when I get a chance.” It really sounded marvelous!
“I’m certain you will.” Eli’s accent sounded otherworldly because it was such a conglomerate of other place’s accents. She smiled at the woman and couldn’t help herself. She curtsied.
“Oh..you shouldn’t.” She put her hand on Eli’s shoulder gently. “Though I must admit I’m more used to that than I should be.”
“It seemed called for.” Eli would’ve blushed if she did that on a regular basis any longer. “You just seem regal.”
“Well, there is some small noble blood in my family, if I wanted to be honest.” It was still only a half-truth, but her pointed ears were the rest of it.
“Your ears are lovely. Do you dream?” Eli cocked her head to the side.
“I do. My father is king of a realm called Doriath. A great underground city beneath a great forest. My mother wove magic to keep the dark forces out. My story became a legend, I’m told.” Which was extremely simplified but she didn’t think she had time to sing the entire Lay. Not that she wouldn’t jump at the opportunity.
Eli smiled, looking at her feet. “I am a vampire. Both in the dreams, and now here.” She was glad that this woman hadn’t noticed before, and she hoped that she wouldn’t be scared of her. Eli thought she was lovely.
“You’re much prettier than the last vampire I encountered,” Luthien replied, sweetly. “Her name was Thuringwethil, and she could take the shape of a great bat with iron claws barbing her wings. She proved to be a useful disguise when I went to rescue my lover, aided by a very special hound." She couldn’t help it, and reached over to tilt Eli’s chin up. “I have gazed upon monsters and twisted beings. You are neither.”
It never hurt to reassure.
“Oh, I don’t think I can turn into a bat.” Eli would’ve blushed if she still could have, but instead she smiled. “I was the one who took that man away from you. I dropped him off about four blocks from here. I did not want you to be scared.”
“Thank you.” She bowed her head towards Eli. “Dreaming about doing something, and then faced with danger for real are two completely different things, I think.”
“It is true. I’ve been more recently faced with danger while I am awake. The dreams helped, but not as much as my desire to simply help others.” She smiled up at the woman, glad she’d met her. She was the sort of woman she hoped to be, someday.
"That is one of the most pure desires. As pure as love," Luthien replied. And for her, love was a big deal.
Eli smiled. “That was the first person I fought for. My boyfriend was hurt by a ... creature, and I do not know. I was so angry. The idea of losing him makes me want to cry.”
"That is the best reason to fight. Baubles and trinkets are nothing compared to that warmth."
“He’s the best man I’ve ever met besides my papa. He has such a warm heart, and he genuinely loves everyone. It is this innocence he has that I want to protect, always.” Eli took out her phone to find a photo of her and Athelstan and show it to Luthien.
“You two make the most adorable couple,” Luthien declared! She hugged Eli with her arm. “I can see the purity in his eyes.”
“He’s wonderful,” Eli smiled. “He keeps me from feeling sullied.”
“Why would a girl like you feel sullied?”
“Because I am what I am. I woke up one morning and I could not go in the daylight. Then I had to change what I eat. I... every time I feed, I feel dirty and bad.” Eli bit her lower lip.
“You feed, like any other living creature. We all need to eat.”
“I don’t like eating people.” Eli shook her head. “I didn’t really eat meat often when I was human.”
Luthien thought of the great feasts her father had thrown in the better years and smiled. “I understand. I don’t think you hurt people.”
“I try not to.” It was why she only fed on Logan; he would be fine afterward, and it worked to sustain her. His blood was so rich, in fact, she could get away with eating once a week.
“You’re a good person, Miss Eli.” Luthien smiled at her again. It was hard not to smile around the girl.
“I try to be.” Eli laughed, hugging her book to her chest. “Would you like me to escort you home?”
“I would be delighted,” Luthien replied, holding out her hand. “I need the protection.”
