Who: Will Graham and Chief Auron
What: Job interview!
When: Afternoon of 8/3
Where: Irvine PD headquarters
Rating/Warnings: PG for now, will update if need be.
Status: Complete

Will had dressed in his best suit - which admittedly wasn't the best - and gotten together a briefcase, even though he didn't really need it. He wanted to make a good impression.

He gave his name to the desk sergeant when he went into the headquarters building, sitting himself down for a long wait. He tried to will himself calm; the worst that would happen would be that he was turned down and he'd go back to the dogs.

Auron wasn't the sort to much stock in the price tag on a suit. The fact he was making an effort and that it was clean would go a long way instead.

The Chief was sitting behind his desk, and looked up briefly from a file when Will came in. "Mr. Graham? Please, have a seat."

Will obeyed, sitting in front of the man's desk, trying not to look too awkward. "Thank you for seeing me, Chief." He'd debated whether or not to give too much eye contact, but in the end he thought it was safer to just keep doing what he normally did - looking around the man's chin and nose. Much less chance of awkwardness.

Auron had done many interrogations over his career. He knew the trick, and noticed it. No judgement, of course. It was natural he was nervous, and Auron didn't hold the trick against him.

He just found it interesting.

"Let's start at the beginning, Mr. Graham."

"There's more than one beginning." Will finally managed, smiling faintly. "For 'real', I grew up in Maine, have an interest in true crime and shoot for fun. In the dreams, I grew up on the bayou, walked a beat in the Ninth Ward, and eventually took a position in the FBI crime lab. I transitioned to teaching, but was called into the field."

FBI. Interesting.

"And when you began dreaming, you spoke of certain skills that developed?"

"Yes, though I've always had intuition." Will took a moment to answer, shifting his legs awkwardly from side to side. "I have the ability to empathize with most people. Well." That sounded bad. "Understand, more like. Grasp why they do what they do."

"Profiling."

Auron nodded. "Irvine is a small town, Mr. Graham. Do you think your talents would be more suited for the FBI, as in your dreams?"

"I don't know." Will shook his head. "I just want to do this kind of work. I feel like I'm being wasted in what I do right now." He shrugged. "I mean, is there even an FBI office here? That is. If you know." He didn't mean to be too awkward.

"Orange County Field Office is local, yeah. But admittedly they might want you to have some experience first."

Auron shrugged. "You'd need to go through supplemental Academy training. Credulous as I am of the bleedover from the dreams, I cannot hire you on them."

"I can do that." Will felt his stomach begin to react. "Just ... I can't walk a beat. Not again." He'd do something else if this turned out to be a negative. "I ... can't."

Auron knew there was a story there. A rough one. One that still was raw.

He nodded.

"There are other jobs."

"So that's it?" Will felt frustration, but he tried to stay calm. He could accept a reluctance to hire him just based on the dreams, but developmental disability thwarting him again was maddening. "What would you suggest?"

The look Auron gave him was unimpressed.

Quick to anger. Another mental note.

"I meant within the department, Mr. Graham. This is not New York City. Every cop does not walk a beat."

"I apologize." Damn, damn, damn. "I'm somewhat developmentally disabled. Sometimes I misunderstand things, but I'm normally much better at asking for clarification. I blame my nerves."

Auron merely nodded.

"Think nothing of it. But you understand there are standard psychological profiles you will need to pass before you are cleared for any kind of duty."

"I can do it." Will said, more confidently. "Developmental disability isn't a problem. It's a different way of looking at things. If you give me an understanding partner and some time, I can do the job. I just am very bad at making small talk."

Understanding partner. That would be the crunch point, he thought. With the right person, a person like Graham could grow.

With the wrong person, well.

"Small talk is overrated. On your way out, you'll go down to Human Resources. I will make a call before you get there. Get the ball rolling."

Will didn't dare react overmuch. He did, however, make a suggestion. "If I might suggest something, sir. Detective Cotton has been a bit of a mentor to me. Someone with that personality and I work very well together. But I'll certainly do as you ask."

Auron got the barest hint of a smile. The veterans on the Force called it his 'jolly chief' grin.

Yeah, it was about as good as it got.

"I will keep that in mind, Graham."

Just like that, a simple shift to last name only. Acceptance. Even cautious optimism.

Will thought he understood. And offered a faint smile in return. "Thank you." He rose. "I suppose in that case I'll report to human resources."

"Dismissed, Graham."

And he went back to his paperwork.
