Since they visited the zoo, Daisy had been asking all kinds of questions about “Ah-Muls.” Severus answered what questions he could, and ordered some books for her on Amazon.com to fulfill her thirst for knowledge. (Deryn had helped, too, in her babysitting duties. Daisy was babbling nearly nightly about playing “Ah-Muls” with Deryn while she was caring for her.)
It was a special treat today. Severus and Romana were taking Daisy to the Wild Animal Park to look at all the different animals. They had the entire day to wander, visit with the Lions, Tigers and Bears, oh my!
Severus had zinc smeared on his nose. He looked rather awkward in shorts and a t-shirt. But it was freakin’ hot, okay? So he had to.
“Where should we go first?” He asked, mostly to Daisy, but his wife could weigh in, too.
Ah yes another day at the animal park. Romana had been looking forward to it. Though perhaps she didn’t have as much fun as her daughter when they went to the playground, she honestly really liked seeing animals. It was fun and educational for all of them. Not to mention that it was nice that all three of them were here.
To get a day off of work and to spend it with her family was the best thing. She had done up with sunblock as well and made sure that Daisy had been covered as well. She was in a very light sundress and a big hat. Oh well.
“Monkeys!” Daisy shouted, not giving her mother a chance to respond.
Severus thought his wife was the most beautiful woman in all of existence. The hat and the dress were just icing on the cake. This was a huge park, too, without a lot of trees to cover them up, so the extra protection was good. Daisy was in a hat, too, but Severus drew the line at wearing hats. They made him look even more ridiculous than the shorts did.
He chuckled. “Monkeys it is, I guess. We’ll get to see everything, so long as our feet don’t get too sore.” He reached for Romana’s hand, and the three of them set off to find the monkeys.
Oh he would be right, make no mistake about that. Still it was too hot and Romana only felt slightly self conscious. Her husband was a handsome man, at least to her. But still it was a little amusing to see him like that. She might have actually giggled if there had been a hat on Severus’ head.
“Otherwise, they’ll have to get stretchers for each of us. Or those little cart things that zoom around.” Ah if only. That would be nice. She took his hand and headed towards the monkeys. “I hear they have gorillas here as well.”
“Like a golf cart? I think they have those here. Only, let’s hope they don’t have to use them for us. I hear that’s how they transport people who suffer heatstroke.” He pulled a water bottle out of the side of his backpack and held it out to his wife.
“We should make sure Daisy is drinking a ton of water today. She’ll be so distracted watching the animals.”
“Sort of but they’re smaller. For handicapped people. I think we can walk.” Romana didn’t want to get into trouble or anything. That would be bad. She hoped they didn’t have to be used for anyone. Heatstroke was something to look out for though. She took the water bottle and took a sip.
Then she handed it down to Daisy. “Drink up, darlin. And don’t forget to let us know if you have to potty.” That was the last thing they’d need.
They had “uh oh” clothes in the backpack, but yes. Last thing they’d need was for her to make a mess. Sev was really glad they were mostly past diapers. ...and, if their plans worked out, they’d be back into them fairly soon.
He stopped in his tracks and watched Romana give Daisy some water, then grinned as Daisy got distracted and went running off down the path in front of them. “Not too far!” he called out to her.
Hopefully if they could keep on reminding her to remind them when she had to go to the bathroom, they could slowly get her more acclimated to going in the potty. It was hard work though. Romana kept an eye on her as Daisy ran a bit ahead and sighed. “She’s growing up too fast.”
“Not too fast.” Severus said, taking hold of his wife’s hand so they could meander along the path and follow after their daughter. “Appropriate speed. I don’t want her to grow any faster, but... well, I don’t want her to grow any slower, either.”
“Is there such a thing? I mean it’s not like she’s got Benjamin Button disease.” Romana couldn’t help but look a little amused. “Oh I know what you mean. I’m just glad that we’re here for her as she’s growing up. Not.. too much working.” She worried about that part.
Severus gave a little nod. “Well... I’ve been thinking about that. If we make a few changes... I’m sure we can afford for you to stay home after the next baby is born.” He said, softly. “If you want to.”
“Really? You really think so?” Hm. Staying at home with the baby was something she’d want to do, at least for a year or two. “It’s not like my company can’t run without me. I mean I’m sure that it can’t, but you know what I mean.” Romana could get someone to help out. “That might be nice.”
“You could at least cut back your hours.” Severus suggested. “Bring the baby with you to work for a while, make sure things are running the way you want to...” He shrugged. “Hire an assistant. We can always get Deryn to give us more hours, too.”
“I can do that. What’s the point of being the boss if you can’t make people work for you and around you?” Romana was sure that she could do that, if she ever got pregnant of course. She nodded a little as they got up to the monkeys. Daisy was already watching them and being fascinated. “Ah an assistant. That would be nice. So sweets.. which monkey do you like best?”
Severus nodded. They were incredibly lucky that they had jobs that allowed for them to plan out their family as they saw fit--and that they had enough income to pay for little trips like this one, along with child care and other odds and ends. They were fairly well off, to be honest, and that’s the way Severus preferred things. Not like his own childhood.
“That one!” Daisy said, pointing to the one that was swinging from a rope. “He’s fast, Mommy!”
That’s just how Romana liked it as well. She didn’t want her kids not to have things because they didn’t have money. But it was good that they had flexible jobs as well. “That’s a good one. I think he’s waving at you. Wave back.”
Daisy did so. She was waving like mad at the monkey now. “Mommy! Mommy! He waved! He waved!”
Severus couldn’t help but lift his own hand and wave at the monkey. Of course, he didn’t think the monkey was waving back. He simply thought the monkey was swinging around like monkeys do.
Romana waved too, because why the hell not? She’d never seen a waving monkey before. Maybe it wasn’t. She didn’t really know. Ah well. “See? They groom each other and pick bugs out of their hair. Like this.” She teasingly plucked bugs out of Daisy’s hair.
“Moom!” Daisy said with a laugh, lifting her hands to swat Romana’s out of her hair.
“They also fling their feces,” Severus snarked happily. Hopefully Daisy didn’t know what ‘feces’ meant.
“How about we move away from the monkeys before they do just that.” She gave Daisy’s hair another ruffle and then grinned and headed towards another set of cages. “What shall we look at next. You get to choose, kiddo.”
“Ehpants!” Daisy decided, then pretended her arm was a trunk. She swung it in front of her, then raised it high in the air, making a funny, raspberry-like sound.
Severus couldn’t stop the smirk that crossed his features as he moved with Daisy and Romana away from the monkeys. “Elephants it is.” He drew out the map to take a look. “There’s a path to the left here.”
Grinning a little, she followed after her husband and kid towards the elephants. “That’s a very good impression. You could blend right in. Would you like to live here with the elephants?” Leave it to mom to constantly tease her about things. She headed left on the path towards the growing group of people.
“I wanna be Ehpant!” Daisy said, and did it again.
“Oh, good. I think she’s found her true home. We can just leave her here. I’m sure they’ll take good care of her.” Severus kidded. Of course they would never. But still. It was fun to tease.
“I hope you have fun with the other elephants dear!” Romana called. Then Daisy flailed a bit and ran back over to them, yelling about not wanting to be an elephant anymore. She scooped her up and kissed her.
“We’re not going to leave you. No matter what. You can stay with us.”
Severus wrapped his arms around both of his girls, hugging them tight and pressing kisses to Daisy’s hair and Romana’s cheek. “We’ll never be apart. We’re a family, this is what we do. We stay together forever.”
She gave Severus a hug in return and squished both him and Daisy to her. “Yep. Exactly. Just the three of us. I love you both.”
“I love you, both.” Severus said, smirking softly.
“Love you, love you!” Daisy said, giving each of her parents a big kiss on the cheek.
Severus let go of the squirming girl as soon as Daisy caught sight of the gazelles behind them. She ran, squeeing to the fence to look in at the “big deer!”
