It had been a few weeks since Renly had last seen Portia, so he was glad that they had decided to have lunch and catch up. It helped that there was no longer the threat of blue alien zombie things attacking them. Instead of going out to a restaurant, Renly had suggested they have lunch on the beach outside his house, because what was the point of having your own area of the beach if you didn’t utilize it? Okay, so he and Loras utilized it quite often at night, but that was quite different than what he and Portia were going to be doing.
Portia needed a break and catching up with Renly was perfect, especially as he had invited her to his place. Sitting on the beach talking and eating sounded pretty much like heaven right now. She couldn’t remember the last time she was this busy and while she felt guilty for stopping she knew she’d feel worse if she didn’t make time for her friends.
So picnic basket in hand she made her way to his place, feeling lighter than she had in awhile.
While Portia was bringing the food, Renly had bought the wine and had the bottle sitting on the counter with two wine glasses. He’d also found a blanket they could sit on so that their food wouldn’t get sand in it. The blanket was also on the counter, so that he could grab everything in one go. When Portia finally arrived, he greeted her with a smile as he opened the door, “It’s about time. I’m starving.” He teased as he moved aside for her to enter.
“All good things come to those who wait” she grinned in response, “Besides isn’t patience supposed to be a virtue, or something like that. Maybe not so much when the belly is hungry though” she laughed as she entered his home. “How have you been Renly?” she asked hugging him as best she could with a basket still in her hand.
Renly laughed and hugged her back, “I don’t think starving is virtuous.” He closed the door and gestured for Portia to follow him into the kitchen so he could get the wine and blanket, “I’ve been well. Not too much to report, I’m afraid. And yourself.” He tucked the blanket under his arm then grabbed the bottle and glasses before leading the way out the back sliding door and onto the patio, which led right onto the beach.
“True and it’s definitely not a good look either” she grinned following him into the kitchen and then outside. “Work mostly and living with Alex while those attacks are happening” she told him. “Oh Renly, this really is an amazing spot” she added as they stood on the beach, “I’m quite envious. If only I could transplant my house here” she winked as she helped him arrange the blanket.
“Yeah, I don’t think I’d look good all skin and bones,” Renly said as they walked down onto the sand then smirked as she complimented his ‘backyard’. “I did pick quite a nice spot, didn’t I?” He’d chosen this particular house because he’d always wanted to live by the beach and the fact that the property included his own section of it was a plus. “Alex is you boyfriend, correct? I’ll have to meet him sometime. It’s only fair since you’ve met mine.” Once the blanket was arranged, he sat down, bare feet in the sand, “So, what did you bring for lunch?”
“Perfect would be a more apt description I believe” she smiled, “Yes that’s right. He’s wonderful. You’ll definitely have to meet him” she nodded, it would be nice, “Maybe the four of us could go out” she suggested.
She sat too, opening the picnic basket, “We have quiche, a selection of sandwiches, chips, dip, crudites and then fruit salad and chocolate eclairs for dessert” she grinned.
“I’ll have to check with Loras on his schedule, but I’d like that.” Even after seven months of being back in California, Renly still had a very small circle of friends, not that he minded really, because with a small group of friends it was much easier to keep in touch than with a large group, but he did want to meet his friend’s boyfriend and thought it might be good for Loras to meet more people as well.
As she opened the basket, Renly peered in and shook his head, “Seven hells, Portia. I think you may have brought enough to feed the entire beach.” He smirked, not even realizing any longer when words and phrases from his dreams slipped into his everyday speech. After helping her to set everything out on the blanket, Renly poured them each a glass of wine.
Portia laughed, “I may have gone a little overboard” she admitted, “But I’m sure we’ll do our best. Most of it will keep if we don’t finish” she informed him. Maybe he and Loras could have a light supper with it or something, “Cheers” she smiled as she clinked her glass against his.
Renly clinked his glass against hers then took a sip as he tried to decide what he was going to eat first. “So, how’s work going?” He asked as he selected a sandwich and took a bite. He was glad that all of his friends seemed to be doing what they wanted, but he wished he could figure out what it was that he wanted to do.
“Really well actually” she told him, “I’m still running my own team on set but I’ve also been asked to be one of the designers for a new fashion house. In fact around the end of August I need to do a runway show so if you wanted to try your hand at modelling...” she trailed off with a smile. She’d be more than happy to have Renly as part of her show and she would love designing with him in mind.
“A fashion show?” Renly asked, brows rising slightly. It was a very tempting offer and he knew that Loras would get a kick out of watching him parading around on a stage in Portia’s designs, “I think I might just take you up on that offer. It’ll give me something to do. However, I might wind up taking all the attention away from the other models.” He grinned and took a sip of his wine.
Portia nodded, “I have a few designs in mind but I’ll be working on them for the rest of this month, the show will probably be the last week in August, depending on where I can get” she explained, “Oh I completely expect you to, that’s why you’ll be in my favorite creations” she informed him with a bright smile, “I’m so pleased you agreed!”
Renly smiled as he recalled the last time he’d modeled for Portia. They had only known each other a little while and he had been eighteen then. That seemed like such a long time ago, but it had only been about five years ago. “Loras is going to love this. I’m looking forward to seeing his reaction when I tell him,” While he was sure that Loras would get a kick out of it, he also knew that his boyfriend would be proud of him for doing something he had a slight interest in, “Speaking of Loras, I met his grandmother last month.” Having met Olenna Tyrell, he could now recall seeing the matriarch of the Tyrell family when Loras had first become his squire.
It had been a great getting to know you time for them and secured Renly as one of Portia’s favorite people. “I’ll be sure to get him a front row seat, I can make him an outfit for the evening too if you think he’d like that” she offered.
“Oh really, what was that like? Could you see any of Loras or Margaery’s traits?”
“I’m sure he’d love that.” Renly smiled and took a sip of his wine. Portia made some of the nicest clothes he’d ever seen and the thought of Loras in one of her originals was something he liked the idea of, “I’ll mention it to him.” At the question about Olenna, Renly nodded, “She’s very outspoken. Maybe not as much as Loras, but he obviously got it from her. And they’re very close. It was really nice seeing them together.”
Portia was glad the idea seemed to appeal to Renly and that he was going to ask Loras, she’d wait to hear before starting on anything. Though she had some designs done already in anticipation.
“That’s wonderful” Portia smiled, “And she approved of you? I mean I can’t imagine why she wouldn’t” anybody should be proud to have Renly become part of their family in her opinion.
Renly nodded, smiling, “She did. She’s really supportive of Loras.” It was really great to see how supportive Loras’ grandmother was of him and at the same time a little strange since one didn’t usually expect a person from Olenna Tyrell’s generation to be so accepting of homosexuality. “I think that she’s more supportive of Loras’ sexuality than his parents are.” Renly had never actually told his own father that he was gay, but it hadn’t been a big secret either. They just never talked about it, so Renly was glad that Loras had family like Margaery and Olenna who were so supportive.
“That is good to hear” Portia told him, “Unusual for a lady of her age, but lovely to know Loras has such support behind him” She herself was an advocate for gay rights and she had a number of friends who were gay or bisexual, it tended to come with the kind of job she did as much as she hated the stereotype. “You do too you know, we may not be blood relatives but your friends support you” she told him, a soft smile on her face.
Renly nodded, "She seems extremely proud of the both of them too. Just the way she talks about Loras and Marg, you can tell how much she loves them," Renly knew they had two other brothers, but Loras had never really talked about them, so he didn't know what it was that they did. He smiled at Portia's words, "That means a lot to me." Renly was very lucky to have found the friends that he had.
“Well she should be, they’re both lovely people. I don’t know Margaery very well but she seems very bright and she and Loras are obviously brave moving all the way to America” she added smiling. “Good” she nodded, reaching out to squeeze his hand, “You’re a great person Renly and a wonderful friend”
“You’re a wonderful friend as well, Portia,” Renly really did have a fantastic group of friends and if he were honest, he would say that Portia was probably his best friend. They might have only known each other for a few years, but Portia was probably the only person Renly could talk to, aside from Loras, when something was going on. Even when they’d first met, Renly had told her about his situation at home, because he’d felt he could trust her. “I’m glad we both wound up here.”
Portia smiled, “Me too” she agreed, “Something must have been at work making that happen” she nodded. Portia had felt an instant rapport with Renly when they had first met, being older than him she’d kind of taken him under her wing a little and they had created a strong and caring friendship. One Portia would now be lost without.
“It was fate,” Renly smiled then finished off his wine and set the glass down in a spot where it wouldn’t tip over, “So what kind of fashion show is this exactly? Is it to do with the things I’ve seen on Valarnet?” For the last couple of weeks Renly had been seeing posts by various women pertaining to fashion. As long as he could remember, Renly had always liked to look good. If there was one thing to say about Steffon Baratheon, he did make sure that his sons were dressed well. Robert and Stannis had never been very interested in the clothes that were bought for them, but Renly had actually preferred to pick out his own clothes.
“Affordable yet fashionable everyday wear” Portia told him, “It’s all the brainchild of Glinda Upland and her accountant. Glinda used to be a model, you might know her I know she was very successful in Europe did the top shows but then she just quit. It surprised me actually that she isn’t still going, when I met with them she still looks beautiful. But anyway, they want to create a new fashion house to highlight designers who aren’t all about designing crazy unwearable outfits. It should be good, we’re all under the House of Glinda umbrella but keep our own identities. We’re to do our individual shows then all come together for a launch show” It was an exciting venture and one Portia was excited to be a part of.
Renly had heard of Glinda, but he’d never really paid too much attention to her career; he just knew of her from magazine ads and things like that. “I think that’s a fantastic idea. Everyone deserves to look like a model.” He smirked and chose something else to eat, “So, just let me know when you need me for measurements and adjustments and all that.” Besides spending time with Loras and his other friends, Renly honestly didn’t do much, so he was pretty much free whenever Portia would need him.
“It’s a pretty unique thing in this industry to be able to produce something for everybody and not limit your market by size, shape or cost” Portia nodded, “It’ll probably be towards the end of next week” she informed him, “I have a small break in filming then”
"Well, whenever you need me, just let me know." Renly was looking forward to this. It would give him something to do besides hanging around the house. He couldn't wait to tell Loras to see his boyfriend's reaction.
“I will” she promised as she picked up a sandwich, so very thankful for everything in her life at that moment. She couldn’t wait to get started designing for Renly, he was going to look incredible.
