Margaery had contacted the law firm her professor had recommended to her personally. While she didn’t need her course internship until September if she could start and document everything earlier it would give her more time to work on her projects and dissertation before Christmas and Margaery did like being ahead of things.
Summer would also be a great time as most people went home or preferred to enjoy their holiday. So dressed in her favorite suit she entered the building for the pre-arranged meeting with Mr Reid.
John was a bit nervous. A few days there and they were already putting him somewhat in charge of an intern. He supposed he should be flattered, but he didn’t want to potential mess up someone’s future. He sat in his office and checked once again he had everything he could possibly need, then went down to the front desk to meet Margaery.
“Miss Tyrell?” he asked, Texas accent standing out amidst the rest of the people milling around.
Margaery turned at the sound of her name being called, in a rather dashing accent too, and smiled. “Mr Reid I presume?” she asked stepping forward and holding out her hand, “Pleased to meet you”
“The pleasure’s all mine,” he said, shaking her hand. “You’ll need to forgive me. I just moved so I’m still trying to get my own bearings around here, but I’ll do my best to keep you up to pace.”
“Oh that is kind of reassuring to know that we will be learning some of the ropes together” Margaery told him, “How do you like the area so far?”
“If you say so.” John laughed a bit and started leading her back down to the offices and cubicles. “It’s nice. The scenery is completely different, but I like it.”
“I know what you mean. Am I correct in thinking you are from Texas?” she asked, she couldn’t distinguish many of the different American accents but his was fairly distinctive and she had someone in her class from Texas too. Interestingly not many people could pinpoint her own accent, except with a vague ‘Europe?’ usually.
“That would be correct.” He gave her a smile. “A little town outside of Dallas, so there wasn’t much in the way of sandy beaches and palm trees.”
Margaery nodded, “Sweden too is the same. Not too many palm trees there, lots of cold weather instead”
“Sweden? Seems a bit far to come, if you don’t mind my saying. What brings you so far from home? Definitely can’t be wanting to be a lawyer.”
“My brother moved here a while ago and as I have always wanted to see America, studying while staying with him seemed to be a good option” Margaery explained, and it also gave her a chance to get away from her mother and her incessant hints of marriage to a ‘good’ family. But she didn’t share that information.
“Can’t argue with that. It’s a great country, once you get down to it.” John stopped a cubicle and patted the desk. “This one’ll be yours. Sorry it’s not an office, but that’s the intern life. Mine is just that one there,” he pointed, “so if you need anything I’m an easy find.”
Margaery agreed and California especially seemed very welcoming if the people she had come into contact with were anything to go by. “Oh I did not expect an office” she told him smiling, she hadn’t expected a desk either really - not one of her own anyway. “Ah you may regret being so close when I bother you with questions” she warned him somewhat teasingly.
“I guess we’ll see.” He laughed. “All right, I’ll show you around the rest of the building. At least the important parts, anyway.”
“Thank you” Margaery nodded as she set down her bag and coat and followed him to discover the rest of the building.
He showed her the important bits - bathrooms, lunch room, where the higher ups have their offices. He even managed to introduce her to some people along the way. By the end of their tour, they’d circled back to her desk.
“And there you have it. Pretty easy, I reckon.”
Margaery nodded, “I do not think I will have a hard time remembering” she told him, “It is a nice place to work I think. So what is the first thing you would like me to do?” she asked.
“Oh, today you get to do all the fun stuff,” he told her, in an amused tone that suggested it wasn’t that fun at all. “You’ll need to call the boys that handle our computer stuff and get your temporary login, and if you see the girls down at the main desk they can get you your intern badge. Then, lucky you, you get to go learn how our filing system is done.”
"I am not sure how I will handle that much excitement" Margaery replied tongue in cheek, "Though I will try my best of course"
“It’s a lot to handle, I understand.” John laughed a bit. “Well, I’ll leave you to it. Remember, you need anything, you just come ask me.”
Margaery nodded, “Thank you very much” she replied, “I will be sure to ask if I come unstuck” she smiled before turning to locate the IT departments number.
