Merlin and Morgana had been so busy with their own stuff lately that they hadn’t had a proper chance to catch up so Merlin had decided to come home for lunch so they could have a good chat. He’d picked up some cake from Audrey the night before and they were going to have tea and cake.
Entering the house he called out, excited to tell her everything that had been happening.
“Morgs? I’m home, shall I put the kettle on?” he hung up his coat before heading towards the kitchen.
It’d been pretty terrible to Morgana, not being able to keep up with Merlin properly. He was her best friend, and, well, she’d pretty much dragged him out here from Ireland, so... she actually felt more than a little guilty.
“If you could, Merlin, I might have to declare my undying love for you.” Yes, again! There wasn’t anything wrong with that, right? “How’d your day go?”
It wasn't the first time he'd heard that and hopefully wouldn't be the last so he happily filled up the kettle and set it to boil while removing cups from the cupboard.
"Not bad" he replied, "Same old, same old really. But it pays the bills" he shrugged with a smile. "You?"
It most definitely wouldn’t be the last, if Morgana had anything to do with it. Her day wouldn’t be complete without mostly-appropriately declaring her (completely platonic) love for her best friend. “You won’t believe some of the things the dancers come up with at work... I can see why Rei needs me to keep an eye on them.”
The club was insane enough without them bowing to every single one of their demands. Or, well, it was in her opinion.
Merlin laughed, “Well if anybody can keep them all under control it’s you Morgs” he grinned at her. Moving to fill the cups as the kettle finished boiling, “How are things going with Gwen?” he assumed well but it never hurt to check.
That was probably only because Morgana was terrifying when she was mad! It was probably a good thing she couldn’t accidentally set things on fire with her mind here... “They’re going amazingly. Gwen’s probably even more amazing than she is in the dreams...”
“It’s great to see you so happy” he told her honestly, Morgana suited a smile and he was so glad Gwen made her smile a lot. “The move here really was the best decision for us” he added, “We’re settling in properly now”
Morgana would, of course, deny that she suited a smile. She liked to be able to mope from time to time - it was good for the soul, she’d no doubt insist, even if she knew that Gwen and Merlin would likely disagree with her. “At the beginning, I doubted we’d manage it... America’s a lot different than Ireland was.”
“Yeah you can say that again” Merlin agreed, “But it’s a good kind of different” Without the move he probably wouldn’t have discovered magic or found Audrey. “You’d never have met Gwen without the move”
That made Morgana smile, just a little. “Right as ever, Merlin. I think we’d be a lot worse off if we’d stayed... no Gwen, no opportunities to meet such amazing people...”
Merlin nodded, “I umm...I’ve met someone special too” he told her, feeling himself going red, “So it’s definitely been good all round”
Oh, really? That was enough to make Morgana very, very interested - if only so she had something more to tease Merlin about. “Is this a ‘someone special’ that you can share with me, or do I have to make ridiculous guesses?”
“You’ve met her actually” Merlin said focusing on making tea, “It’s Audrey, from the Bakery” In all honesty he wasn’t sure how Morgana would react, and was unconsciously holding his breath as he waited for her response.
Wait. Merlin liked girls? That was a thing now? True, Morgana knew things weren’t exactly simple when it came to... that kind of thing, but... it was still a surprise. “Did she seduce you with her stupidly good baking?”
Apparently not enough of a surprise to keep her from teasing. Some things just refused to change.
Merlin laughed, “Well she could have” he told her, blushing only slightly, “But actually I just came to realise that she was awesome, attractive and pretty damn perfect” with the little help of a wet dream but he decided that part would be an overshare.
Most definitely an overshare that Morgana could do without being privy to. For the sake of her own sanity, of course. “Well then. I’m happy for you, Merlin - about time you got some love.”
He grinned, “I’m definitely getting that” he told her with a wink. Yes that’s right Morgana, in the space of a couple of days Merlin had gone from shy awkward virgin to sex god, or something like that. He was still kind of shy and awkward. “Thanks Morgana, I know it’s probably not what you expected, it’s not what I expected either” he admitted.
As long as Merlin never described himself as a ‘sex god’ in front of Morgana, she could take this. It was special, yes, but in the best kind of way. “Are things like that ever what we expect? I mean... I never expected Gwen and I...”
Merlin nodded, he should have known Morgana would understand and accept in that way of hers. “Bugger expectations then” he said with a wide smile, “We’ll stick to the unexpected path since it seems to be working out so well for us”
And try and she might to not to, Morgana couldn’t help but laugh. “Agreed. Expectations can bugger off to... I don’t know, Alaska. Far away from us!”
“Too right” he nodded as he pushed her tea towards her, “So how have you been lately?” he asked, knowing he probably wasn’t as up to date with her as he should be.
Morgana could only shrug. “Aside from the strange dreams, I suppose I’ve been completely fine - Gwen too, of course.” Gwen was lucky. Gwen hadn’t dreamt much. Morgana was stuck with dreaming of prophetic dreams... which never stopped sounding strange. “If I start having ‘dreams of the future’ here, I want you to slap me. Please.”
Merlin nodded, glad she had been doing well. Though he hesitated when she mentioned the dreams, “Well I’m not sure I can reassure you it won’t happen” he said ruefully, “I think things have a habit of bleeding over, at least for some”
Now, that sounded the tiniest bit like Merlin had some personal experience... or maybe that was just Morgana’s mind playing tricks on her. It certainly had been known, especially since... those things had started. “Have you experienced that yourself? Even if I can’t imagine what you’d bring over from the dreams...”
Merlin nodded, “Well umm...I kind of have a secret in the dreams” he said before he levitated a piece of cake and a plate over to her. “I have magic”
...Well then! That was... not quite what Morgana had been expecting. Impressive, though, definitely. “This explains an awful lot, Merlin. Even the things that went on with that Druid boy...”
“I know right!?” Merlin said with a smile, “It’s not even like I hide it very well. There have been loads of times where I was sure I was going to be caught but dream me always gets out of it. Mostly thanks to selective hearing and sight in Camelot I think” he grinned.
Camelot was clearly full of really, really stupid people. Morgana liked to think she was exempt from that, considering she wasn’t exactly from there. “Or maybe we all just like you too much to rat you out to Uther. You’re just as wonderful a friend there as you are here.”
Merlin gave her a small smile, “Thanks Morgs” he replied, “You’re pretty awesome too. Very laid back for the kings ward” he teased gently.
Morgana made quite the show of rolling her eyes. “You’re probably the only person in all of Camelot who thinks that, Merlin. Arthur certainly wouldn’t agree.”
Merlin laughed at her overly dramatic eye roll, “We’ve already established that Arthur is, generally, an idiot”
Wasn’t that the understatement of the century? Surely, nobody who shared their dreams could disagree... Gwen certainly seemed to think he was a royal prat. “The day Arthur grows a brain is the day Camelot is doomed. He should leave the cleverness to us and Gwen.”
“I absolutely agree with that” Merlin nodded, “It’d be much safer for all of us if he tried not to be clever”
“Maybe we should just lock him in the dungeon and ‘accidentally’ take the crown from him...” It seemed a decent idea to Morgana, at least. “That way, anyone with magic would definitely be safe. No risk of Uther’s rabid hatred continuing another generation.”
Merlin laughed, “Great idea, the crown would suit you and Gwen much more” he told her with a bright smile, “And dream Merlin wouldn’t have to worry about being burnt at the stake if he makes a mistake and reveals his magic”
“Do they even have two crowns for Queens?” It was a legitimate question. Morgana didn’t know much of the history of Camelot, considering she was practically an outsider to the place. “I’d be happy to leave the ruling to Gwen. Maybe then my strange ‘prophetic dreams’ could be of use to the Kingdom in some way.”
Merlin shrugged, “I have no idea” he said honestly, “But I imagine they might. I mean Uther was King when Arthur’s mum was alive so she must have worn a crown too I guess” It hadn’t really ever been anything he’d thought of.
“That sounds good. Gwen as queen, you as court seer and me as court sorcerer” he smiled.
“And Camelot would never want for anything.” Maybe that was a bit presumptuous, but Morgana gave precisely no damns about that. “Except maybe for the Queen to stop making eyes at her court seer...”
That pulled a loud laugh from Merlin, “Oh I don’t know, I reckon at least half of Camelot’s population wouldn’t mind that” he teased.
The thought alone was enough to make Morgana laugh too, shaking her head. “I’m sure they’d take it in their stride. Enough strange things happen already.”
“And the rest wouldn’t notice” he grinned, “I swear the number who must be deaf and blind not to notice half the crazy stuff that happens”
That had to be a number that grew higher every week. It was almost like there was something in the water... and considering the time period, Morgana didn’t actually doubt that. “One of these days, they’ll notice something before it gets to the ‘whoops, we all have the plague’ level. Probably one of the signs of the apocalypse.”
“Probably, knowing Camelot it’ll be the horsemen and by that time it’ll be too late” he half joked, though really it wouldn’t surprise him.
It wouldn’t surprise Morgana at all either. It seemed to be on that level of special. “And Arthur would probably try to beat up the horsemen... God knows how that’d work out.”
“Of course he would. And I’d end up saving his sorry arse yet again but he won’t know it and believe he’s damn near invincible” Merlin sighed.
What were they going to do with their idiot of a crown prince, honestly? Morgana couldn’t think of a solution that didn’t involve giving him a new, less stupid, brain somehow. “Maybe one day he’ll learn to appreciate you, Merlin. I know that I certainly do.”
“That is because you are far too intelligent not to realise how awesome I am” he told her with a wink.
Morgana couldn’t help but laugh. “Entirely true. You, me and Gwen are clearly the only brains in all of Camelot.”
“Good job we’re the ones here now then” Merlin said thoughtfully, “Maybe the world isn’t doomed after all”
Well, this world certainly wasn’t. You had superheroes, crazy rich people, and them. “No world could ever be truly doomed as long as you’re around, Merlin. Just... a feeling I have.”
Merlin gave Morgana a bright smile at that and moved round to hug her, “You really are very sweet to me Morgana” he told her clinging somewhat like a limpet as he grinned madly at her.
Morgana couldn’t help but laugh, totally fine with Merlin being just the tiniest bit clingy like that. He was her friend! Her best friend. That alone meant it was totally allowed. “You’re equally sweet to me, sometimes. You’re the most fantastic friend a girl could ask for..”
“Thanks Morgs” he said squeezing her a little, “You too you know. We should go out, the four of us. Like a double date. I’m sure Audrey would like to get to know you better and I’d like you to get to know her” Merlin was after all completely and utterly in love with the woman so it might be nice for her to meet the closest person he had to a sister.
That was an offer that Morgana had honestly thought she’d never hear. Moving out here had clearly done the both of them a world of good... at least in that regard. “I’d love that, Merlin. As long as I’m allowed to tease you for being so blatantly head-over-heels...”
And she’d take the same in return, if he ever wanted to get his own back. It was only fair.
“I’m not sure there’s really anything I could do to stop you” Merlin said in that long suffering way of his, spoilt only by the smile still lingering on his face.
Things like that, honestly, just made Morgana like him all the more. In a brief fit of immaturity, she stuck her tongue out at him. “You’ve never complained before!”
Merlin snorted and stuck his own out at her, “Never been head over heels before” he said cheekily.
Well, he had Morgana there! “You win this time, Merlin. This time.”
