"I've been jumped twice in as many days because of crap like this"
Who: Kitty and Shepard
What: Shepard requests a favor
Where: Their respective locals
When: After this txt and this little adventure
Xi'an had been right. The timing was all wrong, even if her body knew exactly what it wanted. Maybe that was a thing for her. Dangerous situations and first times. She'd certainly dreamed about that enough times. Evidently that hadn't worked out, though she only had pieces of why. It hadn't been until she was laying, falling asleep in Xi'an's arms, that she'd realized that was what she had needed, and nothing more.
Kitty's phone buzzed on the nightstand, and she stirred, grabbing it and peering blearly at the number. She didn't recognize it, but with the way her life had been lately, she thought she should answer it.
Shepard stood on the balcony of her apartment, a cigarette in one hand and her phone in the other. She'd had to burn a favor, but she'd gotten the woman's number, "Pryde?"
"Who's asking?" Kitty slipped out of the motel bed, going into the bathroom and sitting on the edge of the tub.
"My name is Tyra Shepard. I need your help."
Kitty rubbed at her face. She really was in a spy novel, "Not interested."
Shepard started to pace, "Just hear me out! I have a friend, a computer hacker and she's gone missing. Her name is Tali. She just left a note and up and vanished."
"Tali?" Kitty paled, and managed to keep her voice even, "She's gone?" She had the horrible feeling that it was partially her fault. Tali's reaction to what they'd found about Armachan. The Cerberus thing.
"You know her?" Shepard stopped pacing and rolled her eyes. Of course they'd know each other.
"How do I know you're really a friend, and that you really want to help her," Kitty replied.
"You don't. You just have to trust me. We - that is myself and her boyfriend - need to know what she was doing, and where she is. I can't protect her if I don't know where she is."
Kitty chewed on the inside of her lip, hugging her arm around her waist as fear gripped her, "No. I'm sorry I can't."
"Please. Tali could be hurt, she could be in trouble. We don't know. All I'm asking for is a little information." Shepard chewed on her cigarette in frustration, "I can work from there."
"I've been jumped twice in as many days because of crap like this," Kitty replied angrily. "I've got a girlfriend with two preteen siblings who I could get hurt or worse because I have some sick fascination with sticking my nose places where it doesn't belong!"
"I can protect you," Tyra replied, after a moment's quiet. "I have some favors I can call in. You won't have to worry about the kids, or your woman, or your home. Please."
Marine, Kitty noted, running a search. Decorated. Lot of closed, classified files, she didn't have time right now to get into them, but it did give her some reassurance. The personnel file in particular. Stubborn, loyal and true to her word, it read.
"Okay.. Okay. I know what she was supposed to be looking into, I'll dig further. See if I can find where she went, or at least what spooked her." She rubbed at her nose, then added, "I have a contact in the FBI....If I find anything really bad.."
Shepard shrugged, though the other woman couldn't see it, "I don't care what you tell them as long as it doesn't lead back to Tali."
"Trust me, I'm not going to compromise her."
"This is an encrypted line so you can forward whatever you need to over it," Shepard replied, putting out her cigarette. "Pryde..thank you."
"Yeah..no problem," Kitty replied, her throat constricting. She managed to spit out, "If something happens to them, I'll personally forcefeed you my fist."
Shepard smirked. The girl had spunk, "I'd deserve no less." She hung up, and made her way back inside her apartment.
Kitty leaned down, resting her face on her knees for a full minute. Fear transformed into resolve. She remoted back into her computer at home as she sat back down on the bed, stroking fingers through Xi'an's hair. It had finished it's scrubbing, and she felt immensely better about that. Before she got started she overhauled her security measures. She had to protect her sorta-family. That was priority number one.
Shepard, meanwhile, was dialing another number, "Anderson? It's Shepard. I need a favor."
