Kitty rode her bike home. She'd been impressed with Nick Fury's Demon Huntering skills, and it had been nice to relax, even if she felt like his bad eye was actually watching her somehow.
She hadn't gotten the guts to ask for a badge yet.
She pulled up to the apartment, eyedarted, put her sling back on, and then jogged up the stairs. She found Xi'an, and kissed her, then disappeared into her room to change just as quickly as she'd kissed the other woman. Because that's how she rolls
Xi'an chuckled softly. The twins had gone to spend the night with friends, so there had been no need to find a sitter.
Kitty wondered if they'd liked their game, but she would find out later. She decided to wear a dress. Xi'an was turning her into a girl. She brushed her hair out and then came out of her bedroom as she was putting on earrings, "How does Chinese sound?"
"Sound great," Xi'an said, grinning. Xi'an had a dress on as well. And the new necklace. She gave Kitty another kiss and smiled. "How was you're game with the FBI agent?"
Kitty's eyes were drawn to the way the necklace dangled. She reached over to touch it, saying distantly, "Went pretty good. We finished Act I...."
Xi'an swallowed, decidedly distracted from asking anything else about the game. "That's nice."
Before Kitty decided to give up on that whole going slow thing (and dinner), she took Xi'an's hand, "I'll fill you in while we eat. On everything that happened at that warehouse. And some other things I've been involved in." It was...potentially dangerous to involve her, but she was desperate to talk to someone about it and if you couldn't tell the woman you were falling heads over heels for, who could you tell?
Xi'an gave her hand a squeeze. "Thank you. I'm...certainly interested in hearing about your adventures." Honesty was a very good policy in a relationship.
Kitty chuckled, and then locked the door on the way out, "Let me drive? I need to keep my hands busy." She winked.
Xi'an grinned and handed her the keys.
She took the keys, goosing Xi'an and then ran around to the other side of the car, laughing!
Xi'an laughed and eased into the car.
Kitty waited for her to get buckled up, and then pulled out into traffic. She decided to just go into it, "So...I went with a friend to this abandoned warehouse. We were doing parkour type stuff. Jumping, climbing...like the stuff I do in my dreams."
Xi'an listened intently. Those were interesting dreams.
"And...well I told him about going through walls. Like how the building collapsed through us." She changed lanes, and then got into the turn lane, "He egged me on to try it. Going through a wall."
"Seriously?"
"Seriously." She turned left, and then pulled over in front of the chinese place. She shut the car down and turned to look at Xi'an, "I did it. I went through a wall!"
Xi'an blinked. Went through a wall? "Are you sure you didn't just...dream it again?"
"I was wide awake and I have a witness." Kitty took a deep breath. She hadn't realized how important it was for Xi'an to believe her, "It wasn't a dream. It wasn't! I just..haven't been able to do it since."
"I...do not know what to think about that." Which was the truth.
Kitty bit her lip, closing her eyes and letting out that breath. She decided to just move on, "After that was when the meth heads came. I kicked one in the head and we were chased to the roof. It was about a ten foot gap and I couldn't see the skylight on the other side until I'd already landed on it."
Xi'an ran a hand through her hair. "Wow."
"You've seen the scar on my arm and leg." She hiked up her dress a bit to show the leg one again, "I'll cop to it being stupid. But it was..a little too much fun." She got out of the car and got the door for Xi'an, "There's more though."
Xi'an took a deep breath and entered the restaurant. This was getting stranger and more complicated by the moment. And it made her worry for Kitty.
Kitty walked in with Xi'an, trying not to grip her arm too hard. She didn't want to leave bruises, and she was second guessing her course of action, but it was really too late now. Saying it all out loud made it seem crazier, somehow. She had the waiter show them to a more private booth, and ordered some wine to calm her nerves. She looked across the table at Xi'an, "The stairs were out, but there were crates on one of the upper floors. They were filled with weapons. We got way the hell out of there after that, and I phoned in a tip to the FBI. That's why they keep asking me questions."
"...that does explain the continued questions, yes." Xi'an took a deep breath. "That's pretty scary stuff, Kitty."
"I may have been given under the table permission to do further online research," Kitty replied, picking up her wine glass and then slowly draining it. She put the glass down and exhaled heavily, "It's a pretty widespread group, by all accounts. I don't know if I should but..I could help. I just don't know if compromising my principles for the greater good is worth it."
"...I don't know what to tell you to do. Just...think it over, and do what your heart and head tell you to do," Xi'an said, reaching out to take Kitty's hand. "That's all I can say. Other than be careful."
"Marry me," Kitty joked, squeezing her hand, "I do need to think about it. I'm involved in some other stuff and for all I know it's related." She lifted Xi'an's hand to her lips, kissing her fingers, then nuzzled her cheek against her palm, "There's this..girl. A runaway. I was going to get her to a safe place but these guys jumped us. I took them down but she took off running. Me and another hacker, we did some digging...." She kissed Xi'an's fingers again, wanting to suck on one. But she needed to get all this out, first.
Xi'an took a deep breath. "This is...hard."
Kitty opened her mouth for a moment, then closed it and asked, "Hard?"
"To take in at one sitting," she explained. "You're living an espionage thriller, Kitty."
She laughed, "God you're right." She pressed her forehead against Xi'an's hand, "And why that girl is being chased only makes it more of one!"
"Ugh, poor girl."
"She's like...well the files we got into.." Kitty tried to figure out how to word it, "Basically she's this brilliant kid, way smarter than most people her age, and they're testing on her. You know what Eugenics is, right?" It wasn't one of her favorite words. Brought way too much cultural memory back, and stories from her grandparents.
Xi'an nodded. "Horrible."
"So we think she found out about this and took off." She finally let Xi'an's hand go, reluctantly. All this talk made her want to get down to some action, but there was nothing she could do. Her computer was chugging away trying to break some encryption so she might as well try to enjoy her night, "I'm sorry I'm just dumping all this on you."
"It's okay. I'm glad you trust me with this information," Xi'an said. "Even if it is a lot to process just now."
"I can't not trust you," Kitty replied, truthfully. "And anyway if something happened I'd want you to be prepared. Not that I'm being rash or anything."
"Thank you."
"Not gonna lie...I kind of like the excitement." Kitty smiled, flushing a bit, her voice taking on a low, purring quality, "I always get a thrill when I'm hacking anyway, but there's just something extra hot about all this." Their food finally arrived and she dug in, gratefully. She hadn't meant to elaborate that much, "Uhm. So how's the library?" Eyedart.
Outside, a black car pulled into a space a few cars down from where Kitty had parked, and shut its lights off.
"The library is fine! No spies except in the books or DVDs." Xi'an chuckled.
"That's a good thing," Kitty replied, winking. "We need a little bit of boring to compliment the extraordinary."
"It adds variety, yes." And the date was going to be nice.
Kitty ducked her head. The food was delicious, and Xi'an looked even more delicious, "Dream any more, lately?"
"Not lately, no. Have you?"
"We were sitting in a bar, it was the first time I'd seen you in awhile and we were catching up. You kept playing with my hair. It was pretty nice." She smiled at the memory.
Xi'an smiled. "Maybe I'll see that one soon."
"God I was a complete idiot, I don't know how I didn't notice how you felt until it was..." She shook her head, "Listen to me. I'm talking like it's real."
Xi'an smiled. "It felt real, even if it wasn't."
"Yeah. ..." She managed to finish her entire dinner without really tasting it. She felt a little buzzed from the wine, "I think that's ALL the secrets I can think of, right now." She poured them some more wine from the bottle.
"That's probably enough for now, anyway."
"At least the secrets that don't involve getting naked," Kitty teased, her face flushed. Oh boy, that's enough of the wine, "Sorry."
Xi'an chuckled. "I should probably do the driving when we head back."
"Goodie." She grinned, "I'm only a little buzzed but that's probably a good idea." Still, she went for the water the next time she took a drink.
"Good choice," Xi'an said, smiling.
"I think I want to head back, for dessert," Kitty replied, taking Xi'an's hand and kissing her fingers again. "And you can take that as innocently as you want. Or not."
Xi'an just smiled and took Kitty's hand, leading her out to the car. Strange espionage adventures aside, it had been a nice evening.
Kitty smiled, hip bumping Xi'an lightly as they walked, "The next play is going to be Macbeth. I think I can be convinced to go."
"There are a lot of interesting things that can be done with that one," she said.
"What do you think they'll do with it? Or hope they will." Kitty stopped, leaning back against Xi'an's car and pulling Xi'an against her. She just threaded her arms around the woman's waist and inhaled the scent of her hair.
Xi'an smiled and nuzzled Kitty's cheek. "Mmm. Mainly I want to see if they surprise me. That's the nice thing about performances--you can see a play in a completely new way each time."
Kitty nuzzled back. What were they talking about again? Oh yeah, Macbeth, "Isn't it the play with the cursed name?"
A man got out of the black car and walked quietly towards them.
"You can't say it in a theatre, yeah. Especially when it's being performed. Bad luck."
That wasn't the only thing that was bad luck. Kitty saw the man approaching and slid around Xi'an, putting herself between him and her woman, "Can I help you?"
"We'd like you to come with us."
"Show me your badge and I'll think about it."
He waggled a gun at her, "This do?"
Kitty's foot snapped out, knocking the weapon from his hand. She took a step forward, her fist striking him in the throat, before she grabbed him by the collar and through him to the ground.
Two men got out of that black car and she grabbed Xi'an's hand, "Get in the car!"
Xi'an slipped into the car and revved the engine.
This? This was the sacry part about espionage. "Get in, Kitty!"
Kitty jumped over the hood and then got in, "Go!" Wine buzz? Gone. Adrenaline coursed through her as the men burst into a run.
Xi'an? FLOORED IT.
One of the men tried to jump at the car, hitting the headlight and bouncing off.
Xi'an winced, but kept driving.
Kitty looked out the back window as they drove off, trying to memorize their faces, "..the hell, one of those was at the mall the other day. They let him out already?"
"I am not going home until I am sure they are not following."
"Agreed." Kitty sat back down and buckled up, "This is my fault. Are you okay?"
"I have a massive adrenaline rush, but physically I'm fine."
Kitty put a hand on Xi'an's leg, "Backtrack a bit, then head to the freeway. I think we can lose them if we pick the right offramp."
Xi'an nodded and did just that.
Kitty rubbed her own knuckles, but didn't speak for several miles. She looked down at her hands, sobered, "I'm going to have to play sweeper tonight. Try to find any trace that they could use to track us back to the apartment and wipe it out."
Xi'an took a deep breath. "Good thing the twins are away tonight."
"Thank god." Kitty sighed, sinking down into the chair. She really wanted to curl up somewhere with Xi'an in her arms until she was sure Xi'an was safe, "Here, get off here."
Nodding, Xi'an did so.
"Now..turn here." She pointed, "Cut the lights. We'll give it some time and see if we've been followed."
"Okay..." This was nerve wracking.
Kitty pushed the armrest out of the way and slid closer to Xi'an, hugging her, "Shh..It'll be fine. I promise you I'll make this fine."
Xi'an leaned into the embrace. "Just be careful."
She kissed Xi'an's neck, one eye on the road, "I totally kicked ass."
"You did, yes."
"I think I love you." Kitty snapped her mouth shut. That hadn't at all been what she was going to say, "I mean, I love to protect you."
Xi'an kissed her in reply.
She cupped Xi'an's cheek with one hand, kissing back emotionally. No cars past them, no headlights or motion behind or in front, and she started to relax a little.
Xi'an was also relaxing a little, but she still felt very, very tense.
In all truth, Kitty was just as scared as she was exhilirated. Scared for herself, scared for Xi'an and Leong and Nga. These weren't isolated incidents and she didn't think that would be the last. She broke the kiss, whispering breathlessly, "I think we might be okay..." She didn't pull away, but she wanted Xi'an's closeness too much.
"Okay. Good. Lights on, then."
Kitty turned the headlights back on, shifting away from Xi'an. She licked her lips, "I've been thinking..maybe we shouldn't go back to the apartment tonight, to give some more time. I can take care of some of that...scrubbing with my smartphone. We could get a room." Her face was turning scarlet, "Not that we need to do anything but sleep."
"I'm not even sure I will be sleeping any time soon. Not until I relax, anyway." Xi'an took a deep breath. "But a room would probably be a good idea.
Kitty pulled up nearby motels, her hand shaking more than she was happy about, "This one looks good."
She sounded frustrated.
Xi'an nodded and pulled into a parking space.
Kitty didn't like feeling afraid like this. But it was all hard to taken in. She opted to use cash at the motel, getting them checked in, before locking the room's door, bolting it, and sinking to her knees.
Xi'an leaned her back against the door and took a deep breath. She really hoped nothing like that ever happened again.
Kitty looked up at Xi'an, smiling sheepishly, "You know, next time I take you on an adventure, it'll be a much safer one. Like paragliding into the Grand Canyon."
Xi'an laughed. "That's sounds a lot nicer, yeah."
Getting to her feet, Kitty pressed against Xi'an and rested her head on her shoulder. She didn't say anything, just leaned against her like that for several minutes.
Xi'an just held her and stroked her hair. The touch was comforting, and they both needed that right now.
Kitty spoke against Xi'an's skin, "I..don't..want to just...sleep tonight." She needed the other woman. Like a confirmation that no, they didn't get shot. Still, though it hurt to say it, she added, "I'll understand if you think we should wait."
"Kitty..." Xi'an sighed. "I'm tense and I'm nervous and still a bit scared...I don't want the first time we make love to be tied to those feelings. I'll hold you, but I can't make love to you tonight."
Kitty sighed, "You're right....You're so right."
