Building Cerebro was going to be difficult, but also easier than in the dreams, considering the dreams took place in the sixties when science and technology wasn’t as advanced as it was now a days, but not having a telepath at their disposal was going to make it difficult to know if it actually worked once they were done. Either way, Hank was going to enjoy building it with Gwen.
He’d spent quite a lot of time in his basement lab ever since Gwen had come over the previous Friday after work to go over the notes Hank had taken down after waking from the dream. He had a tendency to completely lose track of time when he was in his lab, but for once he actually had his phone down there with him and upon seeing that it was nearing midnight when he’d been down there since he’d gotten home from work, Hank decided that he should go upstairs and grab something to eat before heading to bed for work the next morning.
Since Darcy hadn’t seen her roommate in pretty much forever, she figured that it was a good idea if she went to find him. He’d been in the basement for a long time. Mostly she just wanted to make sure that he wasn’t dead down there. She’d been about to head down to the basement when some noise in the kitchen caught her attention.
Peeking her head in, she looked quite relieved to see that Hank was there and not some crazy person that had just eaten his corpse (she watched too many movies) “Hey Hank, good to see that you’re still in the land of the living.”
Of course Hank had been going to work the last few days, but it made sense that he and Darcy hadn’t seen much of each other during the few times he wasn’t in the basement when they were both home. Despite the fact that it had been a while now since Darcy had moved in, Hank was still getting used to having a roommate and he’d been so wrapped up in his notes and things since getting home from work that he’d practically forgotten that she was there and jumped when he heard her voice.
“Darcy. Right.” Hank adjusted his glasses as he turned towards her, heart beating just a little bit faster, “Sorry, I’ve been working on a project and, I admit, I forgot there was anyone else here.” To most people that probably would have sounded rather insulting, but so far not much seemed to insult Darcy.
Oops. She hadn’t meant to scare him. Sometimes that happened though. Darcy looked a little sheepish. “Yeah sorry too. Didn’t mean to frighten you or whatever.” She was glad that he was both alive and not like dying or something weird in the basement. Sure she thought he was probably in the basement and working a lot, but she did worry. She didn’t want him to die.
“No problem. I’m just glad that you’re actually alive. If I had to go downstairs and find your corpse, that would be pretty freaky.” Apparently she didn’t mince words either. Maybe that was a little too harsh though. Nah she wasn’t insulted. She totally got it. “Should I like uh.. check on you to make sure you don’t actually die?”
“No, not dead. Although, I do have a tendency to lose track of time when I’m downstairs, so you shouldn’t be too worried about it.” Hank had never actually thought of the fact that there was a possibility that he could die while down in the basement and no one would even know about it. When he thought back to some of the experiments and projects he’d done in the past, it actually was a very real possibility sometimes. “I suppose, you should only worry if I’m not here in the morning before work.”
“I’m not. And I don’t want to disturb you or anything.” Darcy was good about letting him have his own workspace and not disturbing it. She did worry about him dying though, even if he hadn’t thought about it. At least they didn’t have a bunch of cats that would eat his face. “Okay. Fair enough. Will do.” Though she would probably sporadically check up on him even if he didn’t want her to. Maybe leave food. He needed to eat.
“I do appreciate you being worried about me though.” Hank spoke as he returned to looking for something to eat. “I’m not used to having other people around.” Back at MIT, Hank would spend hours in the labs on the weekends because there weren’t many people around and someone would generally only come looking for him Monday morning if he hadn’t shown up to teach.
“It’s no problem. Least I could do was make sure you aren’t keeled over.” That’s what roommates were for, besides helping to pay the rent. Sadly she always had someone watching over her. All the time. Even when they didn’t particularly like her. She went over to the counter and get herself something to eat. “So I’m going to the store after work. Do you need me to get anything?”
Despite always being the youngest in most situations Hank rarely ever had anyone watching out for him aside from his parents, but they hadn’t always been able to look after him; especially not when he was in school, which hadn’t been the best experience aside from the academic part of it.
“Nothing in particular. At least nothing I can think of off the top of my head.” Hank finished making himself a sandwich and moved to the table. “If I think of anything later I’ll let you know though.” With Darcy living there, there had been quite a bit more food in the house, mainly because Hank used to buy food as he needed it instead of doing a full grocery shopping.
It wasn’t like Darcy was going to follow him around and make sure that he was good. Everyone needed space. But making sure that he wasn’t dead and maybe leaving him some food so that he remembered to eat, she could do that. It was just what friends did. And even though they hadn’t known each other that long, she considered him a friend.
“All right. Well just write it down on the list on the fridge if you do.” No sense in going to the store all the time for just this and that, little by little. Darcy preferred to bulk up when they needed things. The less time she spent in Walmart and dealing with crazy rednecks the better.
Glancing towards the fridge, it were as if Hank was just seeing the list for the first time and considering how single minded he could get when he was working on something, it was entirely possible for the list to have been there for days and he wouldn’t have noticed it, “I’ll be sure to do that.” He took a bite of his sandwich and waited until he’d swallowed to speak again, “How was your day?” Hank wasn’t good at small talk, but he also didn’t want to seem rude and he really did enjoy Darcy’s company. He was just still adjusting to having people around who wanted to talk to him.
Somehow she wasn’t surprised that he hadn’t seen the paper on the fridge at all. There were already a number of things on it. “I figure that we can just y’know.. do that whenever we need something. It’s a good place for it.” They would just have to change the paper when they needed to. “Oh it was boring. Just a bunch of phone calls and paper work. How was yours?”
“I’m sure Public Relations can be extremely boring.” Hank said, picking at what was left of his sandwich now. Of course there were a lot of people who thought that spending hours in a lab was boring too, so really to each their own. “Mine was lackluster. Working on a few different things. I worked straight through lunch today, but that’s not exactly uncommon.” It explained why he was so hungry though.
“It is, until someone does something stupid and get a bunch of bad press. That happens a bit, but not all the time. Yeah. It’s boring. But.. better than being a barista.” Darcy really hated making coffee. She wished she was one of those people who was really good at something and then tried to get a job doing that. She just really liked sitting on her ass. “Poor us. Maybe this weekend we could go out and do something fun.”
Hank wasn’t sure what they could do that they would both find fun, but at the same time, the whole point of asking Darcy to move in and making an effort to make friends was to make it easier to interact with people his own age as well as others, “That might not be a bad idea.”
“We could go see a movie, or uh.. go to the zoo or something? Whatever it is that people do around here. Do you go to the beach and stuff?” It didn’t look like it, but then neither did she for the most part. It didn’t mean she didn’t want to. Just hadn’t happened yet.
Hank adjusted his glasses and shook his head, “No, I haven’t been to the beach in some time.” He actually hadn’t been to the beach since he’d moved to California and he’d been there for some time now. “I wouldn’t mind doing something though.”
“Me either. It’s just so.. touristy. Y’know? For tall chicks with really skinny waists and long blond hair. No thanks.” That was definitely not her scene. “Cool. You should pick something, and we’ll do it. Whatever you want. Then next time, I’ll make you try something. Like I dunno.. go-karts.”
“Don’t be ridiculous. The beach is for anyone.” Hank said, frowning slightly. He might put himself down every now and then, but that was a side effect of being picked on when he was younger, “I’ll have to think of something then. I’ll let you know when I’ve got an idea.” He wasn’t sure what they could do, but perhaps he’d ask Gwen for suggestions.
“Well then maybe we can go to the beach sometime.” Darcy didn’t mind going to the beach, she just liked being covered up more. “Sounds good.” She went to go look in the fridge and grab herself something to eat. “We so need to go to the store. I’m on that like white on rice.”
Hank nodded and followed her towards the fridge to check out the list she’d put there, “I’ll add some things to the list in the morning.” The things already on the list were things he knew that they needed for sure, but he was sure he could think of a few more things, “Then perhaps we can go one day this week after work.” Grocery shopping together was bound to be something they were going to do every so often, so they might as well get used to it.
“Okay, we’ll go together. That sounds like an adventure.” She liked grocery shopping with other people more than being by herself anyway. It was boring when she went by herself. You could always get into trouble. That was the best part. Now that she was thinking about it, Darcy reached up and put yogurt on the list.
