Nate went to visit Mavis, smiling as he wandered to her new domicile, his uncle’s house! This was awesome! He knew that they were going to be out tonight, so he volunteered to visit Mavis and to keep her company! He had shake makings and barbecue chicken makings in his cold pack in his backpack, and he was ready for a cool night with his cool friend!
He knocked and then waited.
Mavis was happy to have so many new friends who had accepted her as she was, changes and all. She was still struggling to accept all the changes herself, and she was adamant with herself that there were some lines that should not be crossed, but it was easier knowing that her friends would stick by her. It was a start.
She was grinning as she walked to the door to greet the younger of the Summers men. She wondered that he didn't just let himself in, but it gave her a chance to see how he would react to her new smile.
Nate grinned wider as he saw her and her smile and he just hopped forward and hugged the hell out of her. “Mavis! Hi!” All 6 foot 2 inches of him, slightly muscled and slowly gaining more, and smiling. “It’s good to see you!”
“Hi!” She hugged him, her feet popping off the ground at the combination of enthusiasm and Nathan’s new height. He seemed as friendly as ever, maybe even more so. Mavis supposed it must run in the family; his uncle Alex had been every bit as welcoming as Nate. “How are you? You look good!”
“Feeling a lot better than I have been. How are you? Settling in at Chaos Central yet?” He grinned as he stepped in, and held up his backpack. “I have food and shake makings!”
“For the most part,” she said, stepping aside to make way for the food. “Make yourself at home--you probably know where things are already, even better than I do.” She walked with him to the kitchen, and kept on walking right up the wall to watch him as she hung from the ceiling like an oversize bat. Yes, she had been practicing--she’d even made sure to get a clean pair of canvas sneakers that she only wore in the house, so as not to leave tracks in unsightly or hard-to-reach places.
“I think I’m starting to get the, uh, hang of this.”
Nate smiled as he walked with her to the kitchen, and started putting things together. He grinned up at her and just to share his own little fun, reached out and gently poked her with his telekinesis. “You rock! That is so cool!” He grinned as he prepped things, opening cabinets with his mind as he searched for blender and bowls.
Mavis grinned, a goofy, fang-y, upside-down grin, swinging back and forth at the invisible touch. Yeah, she was starting to be able to find aspects of her new life that might be pretty enjoyable. She’d never have trouble reaching the top shelves again. And she’d probably never have to worry about cancer. Or wrinkles. She just hoped there weren’t any overzealous monster-hunters out there that might try and stake or decapitate her before she reached her full potential. There was so much good that she could use these powers for!
She stretched out with her senses a little, and tried to poke back, using her vampire-magic. “So I think I know what I want to study, now.”
He wobbled at that poke and grinned at her. “Oh yeah? What?” He grinned wider. He liked this! She looked happy, and that was all he wanted. And he was curious about what she would do next.
She let go of the ceiling and turned a somersault to land lightly on her feet, then perched on one of the kitchen chairs. “I don’t know if there is actually an established field for it, but I want to study preternatural biology. There are enough of us who have gone through changes and transformations carried over from our dream-lives that I think there could be a call for it. And I know there are some people on the Valarnet who are scientists, doctors, healers, and just plain geniuses. I think we really ought to make sure that those of us who have physiological makeup or biological needs that would baffle the mundane medical profession have people they can seek out for help, and don’t end up as total lab rats, or outcasts from society. After all, the best way to fight superstition and prejudice is with knowledge...right?”
Nate nodded, and grinned. “Sounds like a good idea, a good plan. Maybe a mixture of biology, parapsychology, and medical?” He hmmed, then grinned. “Definitely a good plan. If you put together a proposal, let me know. I’ll make sure it has funding.” With his mom and granddad, he would make it happen, one way or another.
“Absolutely. Education is the best weapon. As long as it is guarded with a right hook.”
Mavis nodded, encouraged by Nate’s enthusiasm. Her father had made certain that she knew how to throw a punch, if she ever had a need. “I should probably get back into sparring, with somebody I’m not going to pulverize if I keep getting faster and stronger,” she said, “And I’ll have to draw something up over the summer. See what I can put down on paper.”
Nate smirked and reached out to her with his telekinesis, and lifted her across the room to him, poking her. “Sounds like fun.” Nate nodded. “There’s a gym. A Danger Gym.” The name made him giggle.
She laughed as he floated her across the room, thinking lovely thoughts a la Peter Pan. She couldn’t help it. Nate might be grown up now, but all the floating and superpower stuff was kind of magical. Or at least she was having an easier time seeing the lighter side of magic--no pun intended.
“A Danger Gym,” she echoed. “As in The Danger Room?”
Nate grinned at her. “Yeppers. My dad is Scott Summers, former leader of the X-Men and one of the primary reprogrammers of the danger room. A friend of mine designed and built a Danger Gym, just for those of us like this. It’s still being kept quiet, though. Spread by word of mouth.”
“I see,” she said, nodding solemnly. “Well, I’m flattered that you would trust me with your secret, and you have my word that I will keep it well.” There was a weight to the last part of that sentence, as if making a promise gave it power. And then she smiled, her spirits lifting once more. “I guess maybe it’s not all bad.”
Nate smiled softly. “I know I can trust you. You have honest feels.” He had adopted the internet slang. “In an effort not to read minds, I have come to just read their auras, for want of a better word, their feels. The emotion and overwhelming thoughts they exude, which are positive, negative, good, evil, smart, stupid, and so on.”
"Good vibrations," Mavis singsonged, wiggling her hips a little. She wasn't trying to be provocative, just enjoying the moment of lightheartedness, wanting that feeling to last. She didn't want to sink into the low lows or get caught up in the bizarre and dramatic moodswings that seemed to plague all vampires in popular fiction. "Can you actually read a vampire's mind?"
Nate chuckled and poked her, hugging her then. “Well, yessss, I can.” He leaned close and whispered. “Isn’t Laura and Jubilee’s website nifty?” He winked at her. He liked making people smile, and maybe blush a little. And she was his friend. And the website rocked.
And smile and blush, she did, ducking her head against his shoulder. “Yes...” she whispered, trying not to lisp between her fangs. “Jubilee had just let me taste some of Laura’s blood, and she kept talking about how sexy Laura is, and how I need to find someone to...you know. My curiosity got the best of me.”
Nate hugged her and grinned. “Hey, it’s okay. I looked after meeting them briefly. And It’s okay. They are both really hot.” He chuckled as he poked her slightly. “Porn is okay, especially when it is awesome porn.”
Mavis shook her head. Yes, the ladies were hot, and yes, their videos were very sexy. But it felt a little bit like spying on them in their bedroom. And it made her feel things she didn’t know what to do with. Or rather, she knew, but it confused her, because it seemed to get jumbled up with other things. “I’m not sure I should be watching things that I don’t trust myself to do without...hurting somebody.”
Nate nodded. “I understand a little.” He made a salt-shaker rise and fall, and then sighed. “I don’t have full control of my powers yet, and they are still growing. One of my biggest nightmares is getting too excited and something bad happening.”
“Like...Bruce Almighty, blowing that lady’s dress up, bad?” Mavis asked, narrowing her eyes, “Or like Hancock blowing the roof off his trailer when that chick was trying to get jiggy with it, bad?” Because she’d always wondered that about super heroes. How did they get it on with their human partners?
“Like....” He looked down and then reached out to her mind and gently spoke there. Like bad... And on her mind he shared a simple moment of battle raging around older!Cable!him, and he was hit by gunfire, and his powers, all new and aborning, rippled outward, and where there had been enemies, there was simply a crater... and his shock and horror at the time... and he withdrew from her mind, stepping back, and looking down.
“Bad.”
Mavis saw the crater in her mind’s eye, and realized abruptly that if there had been any allies in the area, they were gone along with the enemies; and she felt stupidly shallow for her previous question. She reached out to touch his arm, ducking her head apologetically. “I’m sorry, Nate.”
“You didn’t do anything wrong, Mavis. I just... wanted someone to know.” He smiled lopsidedly. “And to let you know I understand. It’s scary not knowing if you will lose control and hurt someone.”
She nodded, her chest squeezed tight with empathy. She hoped she didn't start crying like a girl; she wasn't sure if she'd cry normal tears now, or those icky, cheesy, tv blood tears. "Is there any way that I can help?"
He hugged her close. and maybe sniffled. “Just be my friend. And maybe we can train together.” He smiled to her, eyes bright. “We can help each other get better!”
“We can,” she said, hugging him. She rocked back and forth a little, rubbing his back in a gesture of pure comfort. “And we will.”
He smiled and did the same for her. “You are awesome.” He nodded and pecked a kiss to her hair, then pulled back. “Milkshake?”
“Yes!” Her face lit up like the fourth of July at the prospect of milkshakes. “I’m so glad I didn’t have to give up sweets when I changed.”
And he started to get out the ingredients, and smiled. This would be fun!
