Melanie had been horrified to discover that Nate had been shot in a robbery, nobody deserved such a thing but he was such a sweet boy that it seemed particularly unfair. He’d been such a help to her with the first hiking group outing and she’d been glad to hear he was getting on well with school.

Making her way to his house she had a bag full of goodies for him. He’d told her he didn’t need anything but it felt wrong to go empty handed. It was only chocolate and a couple of books she thought he might enjoy. She wasn’t sure how long it would take him to recover but she knew if it was her she would go stir crazy within a couple of days and he was an active person.

Nate was waiting outside and grinned as he sort of limped toward her. “Melanie! Hey!” He moved to give her a hug, honestly touched that she and others wanted to visit him. He had a leg brace on, and he smiled softly as he gestured to the sidewalk. He didn’t really need the brace, but after the pain was gone, his leg still felt stiff. “MInd if we walk? I need exercise and mom needs a break from people.”

"Nate" she smiled as he approached, noticing he was different as he hugged her. "You seem taller" she commented.

"Walking is great, its good to see you up and about. How are you feeling?" she asked.

“A lot better. I sort of know someone who is great at speeding up healing, so, a lot better. Just trying to feel better and get in shape.” He blushed. “I meant to look you up after it happened. I woke from a dream like this.”

"I'm glad you had someone who could help. I'm sure you'll be fighting fit again in no time" she assured him, before her eyes widened slightly, "Oh wow, aging thanks to your dreams, that's....well unexpected" she smiled.

Nate chuckled. “Me too. And, well, my life in the dreams, and in this world, both, is weird. Hopefully, though, it gets slower, and easier to deal with.” He nodded. He didn’t think it would, but he hoped.

“How are you doing?”

"I hope so too" she told him, she hadn't started having dreams but she had heard some were quite awful. Nate deserved nice dreams. "Oh, I'm okay. Couple of exams til freedom and the real world. I realised I need to start looking for a place to live soon as well"

Walking with her, smiling a little, was nice. She was a nice person. “There are a lot of places around here. Maybe you could find a place with another dreamer?”

“Maybe” she nodded, “It might encourage my own dreams then” she smiled, “I’m sure something will come along. I have a few weeks before I need to be out of the dorms”

Nate nodded. “Good. I believe in you. And if nothing else comes up, let me know. I know a few strings to pull.” He was not above shaking the Frost enterprises tree in his friends’ favor.

“What else have you been up to?”

“Thanks Nate” she smiled at him, he was still a sweet kid even if he was less of a kid now. “Well, I did go on a bit of a date” she felt herself blush slightly and continued on trying to ignore it, “That’s about it really”

Nate’s grin widened into a smirk. “A date? Awesome! You totally deserve awesome dates!” He grinned and bounced more, a little. “Who was it? What did you do?”

He wanted to knowwwww!

Melanie laughed, though part of her worried he’d hurt himself with the bouncing. “His name is Lysander. I took him hiking, just us. He’s cute and funny and really talented” she told him her smile bright and happy.

He was mostly careful, honest! And he smiled as he listened, and nodded. “Oh yeah? Sounds like you like him.” Nate was glad for her and he hugged her sideways. There was a park up ahead and he led the way toward it, since there was a bench they could sit at.

She hugged him back before following him to the park bench, “He’s very sweet. I mean we’ve only had the one date and I’m not even sure if he likes me too but yeah, I like him”

Nate smiled at her. “Then I wish you good luck. Romance is hard.” He nodded. “I’m still adjusting to being older. I have no idea what romance is.”

“Thanks” Melanie said, “It is hard and confusing but usually worth it. At least that’s my hope” she grinned, “I don’t envy you that adjustment, it’s hard enough living through it let alone suddenly jumping”

Nate nodded. “I hope it goes well for you.” Then he chuckled. “I just want to settle, and hope I don’t age-jump any more.” He grinned at her.

“Is there any indication in your dreams that you might?” she asked curiously, it was kind of strange to not have dreams of her own to understand how they felt or worked.

Nate nodded. “IN most of my dreams I am thousands of years old. I don’t know if I’m going to age up to that, but since I aged up at all, it seems likely.”

“Oh my” Melanie said, trying to imagine living so long, “How old do you look?”

“Right now, about eighteen. In the future dreams? Somewhere around fifty or sixty. But I have no idea if I will age that far or not.” He sighed. “It’s all a little weird.”

“Oh that is strange” Melanie agreed, “But if you’ve lived so long in the dreams then maybe you won’t age that far here” she suggested, “Do you have powers or anything?” she asked since it wasn’t usual for somebody to live for so long.

“I have a few.” He reached out to her mind and grinned. Hello Melanie. I have telepathy. And he made a rock rise, bow to her, then bounce down the street. “And telekinesis.”

Hearing his voice in her head was almost familiar in a strange sort of way, she looked at him somewhat in awe, “Okay you really are the coolest person I know” she informed him.

He blushed and grinned at her. “Thanks, Melanie. I’m still just me, though. The crazy kid who loves to hike.” Nate poked her lightly.

"I should hope so" she teased nudging him gently with her shoulder, "I'm not losing my hiking buddy just because he gained a few years"

Nate smiled wider and hugged her again. “Thanks. I just need to get back up to speed, then we should go hiking again!” He nodded, bouncy, and grinning.

She returned the hug, “Whenever you’re ready” she promised, “I’ll find some great new routes for you”

Nate smiled warmly. “You’re the best, Melanie. Thanks for being an awesome friend.”

“Thank you” she told him with a smile, “We make a pretty good team I think”

Nate nodded. “True facts. Were I older and you not interested in this hot guy, I might be tempted to make eyes at you.” He winked at her.

Melanie laughed, “Damn. Well if you age again and he’s not interested in me, you have yourself a date” she joked, “Until then let’s stick to awesome friends”

Nate chuckled and poked her. “Sounds perfect to me. Thanks, Melanie. It’s nice to have friends like you.”
