Nina was midway through her second back to back shift when the flow of injured started to slow, she had been sent to Irvine General after receiving an emergency call asking if she would mind coming in. She had agreed of course and, thankfully, there had been no fatalities. Whatever was going on was causing lacerations and broken bones but nothing the hospital couldn’t handle.
Leaving the emergency room she began checking on those she had first seen, ensuring their pain was manageable and they were comfortable.
Billy smiled as he saw her, sighing as he shifted his broken left leg and carefully waved his right hand. “Hello, nurse.” He said it with a weak grin, just being friendly. “How goes the fun times?” He’d been at Pellenor Fields, but without powers he hadn’t been much use.
After a day of running water and supplies around, he’d gotten cornered by some orcs. Trying to shield some kids he was with, he’d gotten hit by some blunt weapon or another, and had bruised ribs and a broken leg to show for it. Thankfully, others had been able to get him and the kids out of there, but it had been an annoying end to it all.
“Hey Billy” Nina greeted as she picked up his chart, “Slowing down now thanks” she smiled at him, “How are you doing? Pain okay?” He was a lovely young man, hadn’t been a problem at all and the children he had come in with had been so worried about him that they’d immediately told her how he’d been the a superhero and protected them.
Billy was still embarrassed by that. He’d only done his best, and failed. Others had come in and saved the day and gotten them all out of there. But he smiled at her. “Good. Hopefully not too many more people will be wounded.”
He nodded. “Withstandable.” With was to say, ow! But not say it aloud. Because that was bad. He could deal.
“Hopefully” she agreed, “Now I’m not worth my salt as a nurse if I believe that” she told him with a knowing look, “So come on scale of 1 to 10 with ten being the worst where are you at? And no lying” she added using her finger to point at him.
Billy sighed then grinned at her. “Okay... I think about a five. “ He shivered. “Sometimes a six.” It came and went.
“See now, that wasn’t so bad was it?” she said moving to the painkiller drip and adjusting the dosage, “This should take the edge off but it won’t make you drowsy or anything” she informed him.
Billy sighed in relief as she did so. “Thanks, Nurse.” He smiled lopsidedly. “You’re a lifesaver.” He nodded, eyes warm.
“You’re welcome” she told him with a smile, “And call me Nina. From what I’ve heard you’re the lifesaver. Those kids adore you” she informed him as she wrote down the changes she had made to his medication on his chart.
He blushed and smiled at her. “Wrex did most of the saving. I just helped some.” And then became useless when his leg broke. Bleh. He smiled softly thinking about the kids. “Kids need help sometimes, and we have to try to help.” Especially in a war zone.
"Well you were very brave and the kids know it" she told him, some or all of the saving didn't really matter at the end if the day. He'd helped when so many others wouldn't have. "We do indeed especially in times of trouble like today"
Billy smiled softly at her, even as internally, the whole thing played back to him., He didn’t feel brave. He felt bad, sickened by the whole thing, by what he had done. By what he had become. “I’m just glad they are all okay. I lost a few in the madness, and... I still don’t know if they made it through.” He felt sick about that too.
Nina sat down gently on the bed, patting Billy’s arm, “You know if you need to talk to somebody, about what happened, I can recommend someone” she offered, “It’s not good to keep things to yourself, especially after what you’ve been through”
Billy swallowed, glancing at her. It was on his lips to deny it, to just push it away, but a niggling voice made him sigh and nod. “I, ah... okay. Yes, please. I probably should... do that.” Hell if he knew how.
She nodded, “I’ll get the details to you before the end of my shift” she promised with a smile, “And I’ll make sure the other nurses are aware of the changes I’ve made” They should read the chart but Nina had been a nurse too long to rely solely on that.
Billy nodded, smiling softly. “Thank you. You’re nice.” He carefully and awkwardly patted her hand. “Thank you for everything.” Now if only he could keep the feeling of panic out of his mind, every minute.
“Thank you” Nina replied, smiling as he patted her hand, he was a sweet boy who really didn’t deserve to have faced what he had. “You know if you need me the other nurses can bleep me, don’t worry about asking” she offered as she moved from the bed. She needed to continue her rounds.
Billy nodded, smiling at her. “Thanks. I’ll see you later.” He lay back then and tried to rest. He felt like hell, and he wanted nothing more than to stop existing some.
