Who: Q, open
What Night at the pub
When: Post-Pelennor cleanup
Where: A bar
Rating: TBA
Status: Open

Q isn't much for heavy drinking, but the occasion seems to call for it. Well, perhaps not heavy drinking, but having a pint at the local bar is absolutely what he needs right now, to try and start forgetting -- whatever the hell just happened.

He's not used to being sent into the fray like that, he's more of the 'divert the public via stoplights' sort, but by god he was there to help make sure citizens were safe and sound.

All in all, he thinks he rather prefers sitting behind his computer and orchestrating things from there.

"You'd let me fall, then? You are no gentleman, James Bond."

Despite being sore from being banged around during the evacuation, and seeing things he'd rather like to forget, things turned out all right in the end. And here was Bond, chatting with him in a rather friendly way, if he says so himself. There's no reason whatsoever to not be in a good mood.

Which means he's still smiling, feeling a bit warm at the back of his neck as he finishes off his drink.

If Bond noticed, he made no mention of it.

"I can't say I've ever claimed as much, Q. It's certainly nothing I've been accused of."

"Certainly nothing I've ever accused you of, and I've accused you of quite a lot of things."

Q signals to be refilled and sips at this one more slowly. "Thank you, however, for the drink. It is much appreciated."

"Usually loudly, and with a slight whine in your tone."

Well, he was still Bond.

"I expect you'll be heading home then, sleeping this off." It had been a long, long time since his first op in the field, but James could remember it vaguely. The bone crushing exhaustion that crept up on you once the adrenaline wore off.

"I suspect I'll be violently awake up until the moment when I finally hit a wall and pass out. I'll probably tinker around with a half dozen projects, get precisely nothing done on any of them, and then crash. A thrilling evening, to be certain."

Bond smirked. The desk men of the Agency were all a practical lot. He got up, adjusted his jacket and saluted with his glass again.

"I'll leave you to it then, Q. As always, a pleasure."

"You don't have to leave, if you don't want. I'll be here a bit longer. Stay and have another drink with me, let me buy you one in return." He does his best to keep the whine out of his voice that Bond teases him about, he really does. But he doesn't relish the idea of being in a bar alone just now.

Bond cocked an eyebrow. It was a fine line, knowing you could push someone just far enough into hatred. The kid was brilliant, young and not someone he wanted working against him for the duration of what was left of his career. Teasing at this juncture would just be imprudent.

"I suppose another drink, as long as you don't require to be poured into a taxi afterwards."

"I'll drink this one slowly, while you have your other drink. It'll even out.

Order whatever you like, I don't mind."

The Agency paid well, and Bond felt no particular guilt about accepting the Quartermaster's largesse. Ordering another scotch, he settled back into his seat.

"These projects, then. Weaponry?"

"Some of them are. Some of them are just little household gadgets I've been tinkering around with. Nothing to bring to work of course, just little things I like to play with. Improving on my toaster and that sort of thing."

"Your toaster?"

Bond was absolutely not smirking. Or teasing. No siree.

Maybe a minor enemy.

"Oh hush, I'm just using that as an example. Mostly I work at building myself better computers, when I'm not working on actual work. Or toying with my security system."

"Then I'm glad your toaster shall be there in case of a security breech."

There was a reason Bond didn't have many friends.

"Well if I get my own personal security system the way I want it, I can apply it to everyone else."

Q pauses and drums his fingers against the bar. "Don't take this the wrong way, but you showed up in my dream the other night."

Bond didn't say anything for a long moment, eyebrow cocked.

"Oh?"

He typically got that from the female agents, but James always had an open mind about such matters. Q wasn't really his type, however.

"Don't oh, it wasn't anything illicit. You and I met in a museum. We chatted about at Turner painting, and I informed you I was your new Quartermaster. There was quite a bit of mocking me for my age, and you for yours, and then I gave you a gun and a radio. Said we didn't really go in for exploding pens anymore."

Q shrugs and fidgets with his glass, turning it in his hands. "Not a very interesting dream all in all, but there you have it."

Bond frowned slightly, turning this over in his mind.

"A Dream, then." The capital 'D' was implied. It was always unusual to people who didn't know him particularly well to see him switch from the casual playboy persona to that moment where the spy just took over. But Q likely knew Bond well enough to not find it particularly jarring.

"I suppose it must have been, then. Funny, these Dreams that people have. They can be strange, or terrifying. And then there's me. Meeting you. And not doing anything terribly out of the ordinary, only it's a bit more dramatic than our usual gig. Very Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, all that business with exchanging suitcases and whatnot."

Bond smirked, just slightly.

"In complete contrast with our normal employment, you're quite right." Part of him wondered if Q was simply being overly sensitive to the issue, but the truth was he felt the young man's judgement was sound and he was unlikely to confuse that.

"Well yes, you're right at that. But we conduct our business in offices, not -- clandestine meetings in museums."

He picks up his glass to sip at his drink and puts it down again with a frustrated noise, "Why you, anyway? Why do I have to dream about you, of all things."

Bond shrugged blandly. "There seem to be groupings. I haven't had Dreams yet, so I can't speak to such things. It would simply appear we share a common setting."

Strange. He doubted highly he was a superhero of any nature. That hadn't crossed his mind.

Q purses his lips slightly and takes a long sip of his beer, trying to gather up his courage. "I think you're haunting me, Bond. No matter how hard I try, I can't seem to get rid of you.

It's maddening."

"I'm sure that's very troublesome. I'm positive I'm particularly irritating."

At this point, Bond was almost feeling guilty.

"That's it, I'm calling you a taxi. You are clearly drunk."

"Oh don't, I'll do it myself." He sighs and scrubs his hands over his face, then back through his messy hair.

"Look, I know it's impossible and I'm not your type, so I oughtn't even bother. But I do feel better for having said it, roundabout though it was."
