Gabe sighed in frustration and quick dialed Nina's phone, impatiently waiting for her to pick up. Screw texting.
****
Nina saw Gabe’s name on her screen and picked up immediately, “Hey, I am sorry you know” she said as a greeting.
***
“‘Sorry?’ That’s all you got?” Gabe spat back, riling up. “I had this whole thing planned for tonight. Now I gotta cancel the reservation and have dinner alone!” The only thing worse than her whining by text was on the phone. He almost regretted calling. “This thing with your work is really getting on my nerves.”
***
Nina was a little taken aback, she knew her shifts weren’t ideal but they’d always managed to work around them and she’d not had to cancel many plans because of it. She couldn’t help thinking he was overreacting a bit. “What else do you want me to say?” she asked, “You know they only call me when they really need to. They need a certain number of senior nurses on shift and they’ve had four call in today” Maybe explaining would help him calm down.
***
“Know what? I don’t wanna hear anymore.” Gabe hissed, his frustration mounting. “I gotta go. You wanna put work first instead of us that’s your choice.” And he hung up, angrily jabbing at the red “end” button with a finger. Barely ten seconds passed before he suddenly felt really guilty for lashing out at her. It really wasn’t her fault, but he was just so irritated with all the interruptions her job caused.
***
Nina wasn’t entirely sure what had just happened, she sat looking at her phone hoping maybe he was having a bad day and would call her back but nothing happened. Maybe he just needed to cool off. She hoped that was it because she really hadn’t liked the way he was speaking to her.
