"But..." he started, his hand having stopped stroking Sophie's hair. Tony swallowed hard as he focused his eyes on his daughter who was sleeping soundly without a care in the world. She could have been dreaming about flying with her daddy or playing with a penguin for all he knew. Not hurting like he was. He felt his jaw tense a number of times before he even looked up at Pepper. She could probably tell in his eyes that had wounded him.
