Who: Bree Dennison and Winston Smith
What: OMGWTFPOLARBEAR!?
Warnings: Nope.
When: Late afternoon...nowish?

Bree had let herself in as usual, book bag thrown in it's usual spot near the door. She was perched on the back of the couch, her back leaning against the wall. Her legs were curled up and open across her knees was the latest book she'd been reading, a translation of the Theban plays. Cannibalism, curses, murder, bloodshed... Wonderfully appropriate reading material for a young girl, really.

Her stomach growled. She'd forgotten to get an afterschool snack. She hadn't really moved from her spot since she'd gotten home. She looked over at the clock by the computer. There was still another hour before her Dad would be home for dinner. She glanced at the kitchen, then back at her book. Well, reading would distract her from hunger.

Winston was slightly startled when he returned home from his walk with Antigone to find his door unlocked. Opening it carefully he peered in and then slipped inside, closing it quietly behind him. "Hello?" He asked softly, glancing around, heading further inside of the house. When he got to the living room he spotted the young girl and paused.

"Uh." The man took a step backwards. Children, from his time, were not good. They would tattle on their parents and friends; turn them in to the Thought Police..."Hello?" He inquired meekly.

She looked up from the book, her face brightening. "You're home early!" But then she frowned. The man looked just like her father, but there was something very wrong. Like maybe he was possessed or something. She stood up, her feet slipping down to land on the cushion of the couch as she flattened herself against the wall.

"Who are you and where's my dad?" she asked, trying to not sound as scared as she felt. Her eyes swept the room for the heaviest books she could throw telekinetically at him if he attacked her or something.

"What?" Winston suddenly seemed just as frightened and surprised as she was, backing up a few more paces. "I'm...Winston. Winston Smith. I live here." He frowned and pulled out the wallet in his back pocket, flipping it open, checking the ID before offering it out to her. "At least...that's what this says?"

"Winston.." She didn't move forward to look at his ID. Not yet. She was looking at him incredulously. "Winston Smith? From 1984?" He wasn't the first character from her books to show up, she shouldn't be so surprised. But he was here, and in her dad's clothes and shoes and with his wallet.

"I'm...sorry. How did you know that?" His eyebrows furrowed a little bit, mind reeling. How did she know where he was from? Was she here to take him back? He was just getting a taste of serenity - of freedom - and wasn't really sure he was willing to give that up. "Who are you?" Winston asked suddenly, worrying his lower lip with his teeth.

"I.." She shouldn't have said that, she realized. With her weird powers and things, Bree sometimes came off as a little creepy. She should've tried to be more careful with what she said to him. He was new, and more than a little paranoid, with reason. "I'm Aubrey Dennison. I live here. With my dad. Who looks just like you." He had replaced her dad. Winston Smith had replaced her dad. Her stomach felt really funny. It was doing loops. "Has.. Has anyone explained this to you, yet?"

Her legs, which had previously gone numb due to the weird position she'd been sitting and reading in, were starting to receive bloodflow again, and feeling was returning. "Oww," she said, dropping to a sitting position on the couch to rub the pins and needles out of her socked feet. "Owowow."

"I've had...some things explained, yes." Not that he completely believed any of it but at least it was something. He studied her for a moment. "Uh, nice to meet you, Aubrey..." Licking his lips a bit nervously he found himself suddenly concerned when she seemed in pain. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah," she said, still wincing. "My foot's asleep," she explained, rubbing it and twisting the foot this way and that. She'd interrupted the conversation. "Sorry," she said, squirming around and finally coming to sit on top of her feet. That would stop the tingling.

"Everybody who comes here replaces somebody. Like, some people replace politicians or singers. One guy replaced my favorite author.." All the books. He wouldn't be used to this many books, especially not if he started reading them. She hoped he would. "I think.... You replaced my dad."

"I'm...sorry?" He frowned a little. Replacing a young woman's father sounded like a bad thing to do. Had he already messed up simply by showing up in this damned place? "I'm really sorry. I could...maybe he'd come back if I were to leave?"

"I don't know how to leave." She frowned a little, glancing away from him. "Sometimes people do, but not on purpose. Nobody's found a way to get home yet." Not that Winston would really want to go home, she didn't think.

She took a deep breath and looked back at him. "It's okay," she said. She was strong. She'd been without her dad before, on the island. "Um. If you don't want me around, I could see if my friend will let me live with him." She looked around at all her books and wondered if they would fit in James' apartment. "Just don't send me to my mother's."

"Oh, no. No. You can stay." He offered her a little, shy smile. "I mean...I wouldn't mind the company, I guess. You..." His voice dropped, "You aren't working for Big Brother, are you?" Not that she'd tell him if she were, but he might as well try.

Bree smiled back. She was nervous, but. It could be okay. She shook her head when he asked it, not laughing. "No. Big Brother isn't here. Well, there's this awful television program about it, but no. You don't have to worry. Look." She held up her book for him. "Do you think I'd be reading this if I were worried about the Thought Police?"

"No, I suppose not." Taking a look around, he realized there were a lot of books all through the house. Thoughtfully, he approached one of the bookshelves and ran his fingers over the spines. Some of the stories - especially the works of Shakespeare - popped out at him and he realized Big Brother really wasn't there. No way all those books would be allowed into the hands on a little girl if he was.

"You should read that one," she said, nodding at a book that he had just slid his finger over. She had followed him to the bookshelf and was standing right next to him, perhaps a little closer than one would normally consider comfortable for a stranger. But he looked just like her dad, and after all, she felt like she knew him because of the book. "I think you'd like it."

"Oh, no. I...couldn't." He didn't really know if he could read a whole book anymore. Though after a moment he pulled it off the shelf and began flipping through it thoughtfully.

She gave him a weird look. She didn't understand. 'Couldn't'? It was a book. She didn't understand why anyone wouldn't want to read a book, especially if they came from a world where it wasn't really allowed.

Once he was flipping through the book, she returned to her spot on the couch, nestled into the corner and opened up her own book. She glanced up at him after a minute or two to make sure he was still reading.

He couldn't because he wasn't sure if he could bring himself to open the book and read it. The Party rules were still burned into his head and they were hard to ignore. Sighing softly he closed the book and sort of just hugged it to his chest, glancing at Bree. "How old are you, Aubrey?"

"Twelve," she said, resting her cheek against the couch and looking at him. She could almost pretend he was her dad.

"I'm hungry," she said after a long pause. "Are you?"

"Well, I could be." Though he felt a certain fullness in his belly from lunch with Antigone, he still felt that pang of hunger hit him. It was as if his stomach wanted as much of the new food as it could get before he could forget what it would taste like.

"Though I'm afraid I'm really bad at cooking."

"Well, yeah," she said, not really surprised at all that he wasn't a great chef. She shrugged. "I was thinking we should order delivery, anyway." They didn't have pizza very often, but every now and then when both she and her dad had been having a rough day, they ordered out. She thought today definitely qualified.

"I'll show you." She stood up and walked over to the phone in the kitchen. "The number's here on the fridge," she said, pointing it out and dialing. She didn't bother asking him what he wanted. It isn't as though he'd really know, anyway.

She ordered a pizza and then hung up the phone. "They said it'll be here in forty minutes."

"Yeah." She was very patient. She knew a lot of this stuff would be new to him. "We have to pay him and give him a tip. I know where we keep the money for stuff like that." They could have ordered and paid for the pizza online, nowadays. But Bree's dad was sort of old fashioned, sometimes.

"I know. But the delivery person can't take those. This way is easier, I think." She shrugged and sat back down. She tilted her head some, thinking. "You should meet my Uncle James," she said. Her dad really liked Uncle James, and they got along well. She hoped Winston would be the same way. The more she could find in common, the easier this would be.

She watched him, her head tilting to the side a little as she looked at him. "Is there anything you need?" She didn't know what she could do for him. She wasn't very good at taking care of people; she was only twelve.

"No, no. Just...time? Time to adjust..." To figure out if this was some sort of strange Party test. "If you need anything I'll do my best...to help you, okay? I never had kids but I can...try."

"Okay," she said, nodding some. She didn't think she'd need help from him, really. At least, not for a while. She was pretty self-sufficient, for a twelve year old. "I'm going to go to my room and read, okay? I'll come help when the delivery person gets here."
