Who: Tach, Seth, Merv, maybe others?
What: Rescue Mission!
When: Day Four
Warnings: Oh, I imagine there will be language and violence.

Tachikoma was back in the chair. She was pale and there were dark circles under her eyes. He'd let her walk around for a little while on the third day, but that had ended when she'd tried to lie down and close her eyes. Now the purpose of her bonds was mainly to keep her upright, rather than to keep her from running. He hadn't let her go until she was complacent enough to face the window and not try to look. He stayed behind her the whole time.

Now she had been awake for over a hundred hours. She was quiet, her head occasionally tilting jerkily to the side whenever she thought she heard something. Every now and then she thought she heard a footstep, or a woman's voice. She looked down at her fingers, pressing them together to keep them from shaking. Now that her resolve was completely broken, Seth had stopped hiding from her. They would be leaving the city soon.

Seth had the pills in his pocket, his clammy hand clasped tightly around the bottle. He'd let her do a few things. Kept her fed and quiet, let her walk around. He wished he didn't have to stop her from doing anything, but certain rules had to be upheld. When someone knew the king of dreams, it was simply logical to keep them awake and out of harm's way until the harm had passed completely. When they were out of the city, things would start to get easier for the both of them.

He stood behind her, letting his hand hover over her shoulder. He couldn't bring himself to touch her, remembering her squirming body when he'd held the chloroform against her mouth, remembering her naked. Instead, he studied her reflection in the window.

"I was thinking maybe we could go to Canada," he said, his voice quiet. Everything seemed to move slowly, dust spiraling in the cold, empty room. He had barely slept himself, since he had to keep awake to watch her. He hadn't wanted to sleep anyway. "But now I don't know...where do you want to go?"

Depriving a person of sleep could only go on for so long. Merv and had been ready for it, knowing that eventually Tach wouldn't be able to stay awake any longer. Of course, he'd done his best to not think about what must have been done to her in order to keep her awake and out of the reach of the Endless. It made him angry. Whoever'd taken her was going to regret it for a very, very long time.

Tachikoma's eyelids fluttered. That was all they needed. A half second where she dozed and Merv was there, suddenly. The place was dark. Dirty. It smelled. He only hoped that Tach was okay. Still scarecrow shaped, with a pumpkin for a head, Merv busted through the door.

Seth pulled away from her quick as shrapnel from the center of a bomb, both hands up. What...was it? He had trouble controlling his shock, but he stuck close to Tachikoma, not willing to move too far from her.

"Who are you?" he demanded, one hand clasped tightly around the back of the chair, the other reaching into his pocket. He wasn't scared. Not at all.

"Merv?" she called, head tilting to the side. "Is it really you?" She was hesitant to trust her senses anymore, with the strange things she'd been seeing and hearing. There was something missing in her eyes; a light that wasn't there.

She strained against the ropes a little before falling back again against the chair.

To someone unused to his normal appearance, Merv was a frightening thing. His voice was even deeper, more gravely when he was a scarecrow. And because there was a cigar hanging from his zig-zag mouth, smoke was streaming out of his empty eyes. "Y'okay, Tach?"

To her captor, Merv said, "Y'wanna get away from her right fuckin' now."

Seth didn't move for a moment, his wide eyes trained on Merv. There was a feverish cast to them, and he smiled.

He let go of the chair and started backing up, toward the door to the next room. He kept his eyes trained on Merv the entire time, even as he disappeared through the door, leaving it partially ajar. The room beyond was completely dark, the windows all blacked over. He stopped making sound as soon as he went in, padding around on carpet, heading for the far wall. Where, where...there.

He was so glad he prepared for all contingencies.

"Huh?" It took her a few extra seconds to process what was going on and what he said. "Um. I don't feel good." She had gotten progressively worse the longer she had been here. It felt like there was itching under her skin and she couldn't do anything. Her heart felt like it was going really fast and she felt really warm and was starting to feel nauseous.

She wasn't aware of where Seth was or what he was doing in the background, only able to follow one thing at once. She watched Merv, but it was hard for her eyes to focus, her vision blurring in and out.

Seth, obviously, underestimated the power of a dream. Merv moved forward, more concerned about Tach than Seth. "Don't gotta worry," he said, trying to sound as soothing as possible. "M'here. I'll make sure you're a'right." He cut through her bonds with a scissor he pulled from his pocket. He glared after Seth, who'd disappeared into another room, all dark.

Merv reached into his pocket again. He could make anything. "Close yer eyes for a sec, Tach." He waited until she'd listened and then pulled out a flash bomb. He tossed it in the room, hoping to blind Seth. "Boss?" Merv said in a loud voice.

The room grew cold and darkness billowed in around the materializing Endless. Morpheus was angry. He refrained from immediate action, believing that Mervyn should be the one to make the call on this one. His presence was intimidating, to say the least.

Seth saw something fly into the room, and had just begun to back up when the flashbomb exploded. His free hand instinctively went to his eyes as he struggled to stay standing, stumbling back against the wall. "FUCK."

No no no no no. This was all going so wrong. He shook his head vigorously, blinking his eyes hard as he tried to regain his vision. His right hand was clutched around the handle of a fireax, white-knuckled, and he began moving toward the entrance to the next room, his vision still blurred. He couldn't make out much more than the bright slit of light where the open door was. The ax bumped against the ground as he walked, his teeth bared in a grimace, his eyes squinting against the thin light.

Tach leaned against Merv as he cut her free, nuzzling into his chest. He was real. And kinda splintery. She winced a little at the sound from the other room, and then everything started to go cold. She clutched a little tighter to the wooden form of her boyfriend.

"I wanna go to sleep but I can't get tired," she said, frowning. But that wasn't totally right. She was tired, she just... She didn't even know.

"S'okay." Merv put one arm around her. The other went into his vest. He pulled out some sand. "This'll make yah sneeze 'n then sleep. We can talk in yer dreams. And y'don't have'ta worry. I'll make sure you get to bed." He leaned in and kissed her forehead.

Merv figured Dream would catch the captor, so he didn't even worry about the stupid mortal. Tach was his biggest concern.

Seth hovered in front of the door, squeezing his eyes shut tight. He had to be able to see. Just enough, just enough to aim.

He pushed the door open, walking out. His eyes were red and he was obviously still in pain. He put his other hand on the handle of the ax, against his shoulder with the blade tipped away from his neck.

Someone else had entered the room. He registered in the back of his mind that it had gotten much colder in here, and the man ahead...he was mostly a black blur, but something about him made Seth uneasy.

But no matter. He turned his attention to Merv, who he could see had Tach in his arms.

"Put her down," he said, gritting his teeth. "Because I'm not afraid to kill you in front of her."

Mmm, sand. It tickled her nose and she gave a little sneeze before her eyes closed and she went limp in Merv's arms. She barely saw the glint of an axe before she fell into the deep, sweet refuge of the Dreaming.

There was a hollow laugh from the dark figure that stepped between Seth and Merv.

My Sister will not be coming tonight. Not for Mervyn, and not for you.

Merv knew that Dream would protect him. Dream was his boss. And, more than that, he was a friend. Merv was gentle with Tach, lifting her up in his arms as though she weighed next to nothing. Then he turned his head to Dream and Seth. "You..." Merv frowned, cigar still in his mouth. This guy had been one of Tach's friends. One of the weird ones, sure, but he'd always seemed... harmless.

Merv had been angry. But now, with Tach in his arms, he was more tired. And relieved that she was okay.

His vision was starting to clear, and the more that it did, the less he wanted to look at the tall man standing between him and Merv. He kept steady, however, pulling the ax off of his shoulder.

"Don't think that I won't," he said, laughing a little in return but without mirth. "Or that I haven't before." He was infuriated by this whole thing, all the planning gone to waste, and Tach...that he thought he could take her away from him. That was the worst part of all of this. "If you don't move aside, then you move up on my priorities list," he said, not looking Morpheus directly in the eye. He'd caught a glimpse of those eyes, how deep they were, and he didn't like them. He smiled, then, sharp as a knife. "You're not taking her anywhere. She doesn't need you."

His anger and frustration and general confusion wiped everything else away. He was more than ready to kill them both, or die trying. "You can't take her from me. You...can't. Not after I fought so hard to get her."

Mervyn may no longer have been angry, but Morpheus still was. He would turn his attentions later to re-scaping the Dreaming to a more comforting place, but for now his focus was on Tachikoma's captor. He stepped forward, unswayed by the threats.

You are a tiny, insignificant boy. Your acts before were heinous, but do nothing to make you important. Your obsessions on them are laughable.

Each statement took him another step closer to Seth. The weapon the mortal wielded was unimpressive to the Endless. If the man could even muster the courage--the insanity to swing--the blade would find itself useless against the King of Dreams.

I will not send you to Hell, mortal. You will find yourself in the angels' realm soon enough. You seek darkness. Fear. You will have them. You will have more sorrow than you have ever known. You will be more desperately alone than you have ever been. You will spend a thousand years in the blackest pit of my realm, but despite the blackness, you will see what nightmares are there as they gnaw off your skin.

He was on top of Seth now, his pale fingers wrapping tightly around the boy's powerless arms. Every word he spoke was full of white hot rage.

You. Possess. NOTHING.

He still had every intention of swinging the ax, even as Morpheus moved closer and that giant, threatening presence came upon him. Then Morpheus grabbed hold of him, and he couldn't move anymore. His grip was so cold, so fierce, his face so terrifying, that he didn't even try to struggle. His eyes went wide, like a child who had just suddenly realized that they had done a bad thing.

His resolve melted away, and he found himself suddenly so terrified that he couldn't speak. Still, he looked past Morpheus, beyond that furious stare, and his eyes fell on Tach. He barely registered what Morpheus had said, so scared beyond the point of reason that it was a wonder he hadn't passed out yet.

Somehow, from the deepest part of him, the honest part, the madness, words bubbled up without him meaning them to. "You don't know," he croaked, looking up at Morpheus. "You're something...something big and not human at all and I may not be human but not like you're not. You've never had to fight for anything. You could have anyone you wanted. You don't know what it's like, to...to want someone so badly and not be able to have them. So badly that you would do anything, anything because you love them."

He laughed, and then found he couldn't stop. This was the end of the line, he was pretty sure. Someone in the back of his head informed him in a calm voice that he had finally snapped, that this was it. That made him laugh harder. "You...don't...know...anything," he said, looking Morpheus in his empty eyes.

And laughing. Laughing away.

Even Merv cowered a little at Dream's might. It was hard not to feel cold when he spoke with that voice that filled the room. Merv was frowning, shielding Tach as best he could from all of this. He didn't want her to have bad Dreams because the Lord Shaper was angry.

Merv looked on at Seth, who was so obviously crazy, and almost felt bad. "This ain't love," Merv said, his voice harsh. "Y'hurt her." He almost felt bad for the mortal. Not quite. Not enough to stop Dream and or get in the middle. He just watched. Focusing on Seth and then on Tach.

I know enough.

Morpheus had known unrequited love, and he hadn't handled it much better than Seth. Some might argue that sentencing a girl to thousands of years in Hell was worse than keeping her awake and tied up for a week. Those people could join Seth in his nightmare, for all Morpheus cared at the moment.

Unmoved by Seth's words, the Dream King's grip tightened and then they were gone, off to the Dreaming.

The room was growing warmer now, and Tach slept on, seeming peaceful enough.

Merv needed to head back to the Dreaming. But first, there was Tach's body. Merv was gentle in his movements. Holding her wasn't a problem, he was larger than she no matter what form.

Merv got her home quickly, put her in bed and watched her sleeping form quietly for a bit. He touched her face with twig-fingers and smiled when she let out a soft snore. "S'good to have ya back, kid," he said, leaning in and softly kissing her forehead.
